Feel The Thermogenic Burn  

In last month's newsletter, we made the comment, "Not all calories are created equally."  To understand this more, it helps to know just what a calorie is.  One calorie is the energy needed to raise one gram of water from 15 to 16 degrees Celsius or the measurement, 4.184 absolute Joules.  If you only view calories as a unit of energy or the weight loss adage, "calories in, calories out", then yes, they are equal.  However, your body doesn't burn them equally for energy, also known as thermogenesis--thermo, meaning heat and genesis, create.  Depending on your body and its needs, depends on the balance of carbohydrate, protein, and fat calories you should consume.

 

The majority of American diets are high in carbohydrates (1 gram = 4 calories)--the average body needing 40-60% of caloric intake from these.  Carb calories provide fuel for quick and high intensity body movements, lasting 30-90 minutes--everything from chasing a toddler to our BoxFIT class.  Your body converts them into glucose to be used almost immediately and the unused becomes glycogen.  Since the storage amount of glycogen--in the muscles and liver--is limited, insulin then converts excess into fatty acids.  This is why those with type I diabetes lose weight.  The pancreas can't produce insulin, causing glucose and calories to be lost in urine.  

 

Proteins (1 gram = 4 calories) are converted to amino acids for energy in the later portion of a workout.  These acids become glucose when glycogen reserves are depleted.  When the body is lacking carbohydrates regularly, it uses protein for fuel at the expense of lean muscle mass.  Also used for muscle repair, your body may need more protein than it's getting if you perform a lot of aerial tricks or other weight-bearing exercises or work.  According to LiveStrong.com, because it takes longer for your body to break it down in a useable form, "you will burn up to 30 percent of the calories in the protein you consumed merely to digest [it]."  Adding protein to each meal and snack will help boost your metabolism for faster fat loss.

 

With so much emphasis in our society to lose weight, people grab the products labeled: non-fat, low fat, fat free, and so on.  Fat helps your body retrieve glycogen, but when that's gone, it gets burned.  Oxygen is needed to do this, so lower intensity exercise is necessary.  And avoiding this in a pre-workout snack is a good idea, as it's slow to digest into energy (up to 6 hours).  As with many things, too much fat (1 gram = 9 calories) isn't good, but too little is also harmful--20-35% of daily calories should come from fat.  Your brain is 60% fat, it protects and insulates your organs, and it's endurance fuel--jobs that require walking for several hours, training for marathons or similar activities.  Reduce animal fats and consume healthier types of fats

 

If you want to perform at your best and feel your best with quicker recoveries between workouts, evaluate your body's caloric needs.  For example, if you skimp on protein and add PoleTRICKS to your exercise regimen, your efforts will suffer and so will your body.  It'll be weak, tired, and sore longer than if you added protein into all meals.  It may take some diligence and tweaking for you to find what makes your body happiest, but it's worth it!

AerialKIDS Workshop Returns!

Mark your calendars, AerialKIDS returns along with our new AcroTOTS starting the week of June 22nd at both Madson Hts & Utica locations!  Kids will feel like they're part of the circus as we teach them aerial gymnastic conditioning and skills and various apparatus tricks (age appropriate) that will have them flying and having fun.  Open to girls and boys 3-12yrs.  Ages 3-5yrs must have parent present during class session.  Parent/Legal guardian must be present to sign waiver before child participates.

Increase Health And Happiness With A Garden
A garden can benefit your life in multiple ways, as there are multiple types of gardens.  Flowers add color, fragrance, and attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other wildlife.  Herbs can add fresh and bold flavors to your cooking.  This is especially helpful if you find clean eating to be bland, which it needn't be.  And of course, vegetables and fruits mean eating what's in season, saving money, and giving your diet a nutritious boost, if it's lacking. 

Gardening can get you outside and active, though there are options for small spaces, poor soil, and apartment/condo living--where there isn't any ground to work with.  Decide what you'd like to plant and determine the space you are going to work with.  Container gardens are wonderful for flowers, herbs, and many vegetables.  They're perfect for small spaces or the beginner.  To really add a conversation piece inside or out, make a living wall.  These are vertical gardens and can be very artistic depending on your creativity.  Remember that plants in the home help clean the air, another healthy bonus!

May is a wonderful time to start planting vegetables, but what if you've never done this before?  Start small with the above ideas or use this Better Homes and Gardens planning guide.  The success you have in the growing months to come, will depend on good preparations now.  Know what climate zone you live in (the Detroit area is 6b) and what vegetables can be planted by month.  You won't save money if you plant something at the wrong time or in the wrong environment and will make your experience miserable.  You want to take great pride and pleasure eating the foods you grew!

Pole Move of the Month:  

 The Invert    

The Invert is a fundamental move in pole tricks.  Demonstrated in this video, is the beginning level, kicking up into it and the advanced dead-lift.  It requires a strong upper back and core, but don't worry if you can't lift all the way up.  Practicing a little lift and kick will strengthen your body each time.  Eventually, you'll be able to do it.  Enjoy!

PoleFIT Essentials INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

Are you interested in becoming a Pole Fitness Instructor?
PoleFIT Revolution will be offering their 1st of many Instructor Trainings starting with PoleFIT Essentials.  This training will give you the basic tools to break into the world of Pole and Aerial as an instructor.  You'll learn the ins and outs of a variety of Beginner Pole Fitness Spins, Power Moves and Dance Choreography and most importantly how to teach it to others and progress them safely.  Beyond the class room you have the option of completing your training by logging class observation and team teaching hours at our studio classes.
