This month we thought we'd offer you some helpful advice to deal with the day after St. Patrick's Day--or any other celebration that finds you hungover.  We also have articles on potassium (your mineral BFF for hangover recovery) and keeping your makeup on and looking fresh during late nights out.  Remember, March 14th is our Annual Student Recital & 6 Year Anniversary Party (See Events)!  Please, bring your friends and family to this open house event.  Our students have been practicing diligently to wow you with their skills and talent, and inspire others into joining our community.  Without you, we wouldn't have come so far and we thank you!  Please read on for more and enjoy!

After the Celebration: Curing a Hangover with Exercise and Other Remedies  

You're out with friends, enjoying a few drinks, inhibitions lax, and a few cocktails become a lot.  You then find yourself gripping the toilet for fear of spinning off into orbit, making the same broken promise to not drink so much...again.  Hangovers have different levels--from mild headache to death wish--and many "cures" to go along with them.  If avoiding this dreaded experience isn't going to happen, knowing the best and worst foods to eat and committing to exercise, will aid you immensely in getting better.     

 

Hangovers occur because the body is dehydrated and loaded with toxins.  Without any fluids, your body cannot remove metabolic waste from its cells.  The kidneys are also prevented from functioning properly because "alcohol blocks the release of a hormone that is needed for water reabsorption. Without this hormone--called antidiuretic hormone, or ADH--the kidneys do not reabsorb the water; instead they excrete it as urine," says Shira Goldenholz of Livestrong.com.  

 

Assuming you have gotten to the point you stopped vomiting (or never got there), sip water.  You need to replenish your cells' fluids so they can dump the toxins.  If you have sports drinks or coconut water, those have electrolytes (water doesn't) and can speed up the process.  Avoid drinking coffee and "hair of the dog".  Both will dehydrate you further.  To calm a nauseous stomach, pass on citrus beverages and try ginger or peppermint tea.   

 

Both your blood glucose and sodium levels are low when hungover.  Whole grain crackers or toast will settle an angry tummy and raise your blood sugar slowly.  Broth based soups like chicken noodle or miso can help rehydrate you and replenish sodium.  Avoid greasy foods after drinking, since they can irritate your stomach, but beforehand, they can coat the stomach and slow alcohol absorption.   Now that your body is on the path to re-hydration, it's time to move!

 

Maybe you think we're crazy, but exercise is a wonderful hangover remedy.  It won't feel great at first and shouldn't be done if you haven't started re-hydration, but as soon as you can move around, keep going.  You'll know what you can handle, whether it's a brisk walk or our Saturday morning BoxFIT class.  Aside from your liver and kidneys ridding the body of waste during a workout, sweating and breathing do the same.  You may even notice a different body odor and your mouth tasting or smelling foul.  Don't worry, your body is doing what it's supposed to and it's nothing a shower and toothpaste can't wash away afterwards. 

 

In addition to cleaning the body, so to speak, exercise combats depression and fatigue.   Alcohol acts as a depressant on your brain as it wears off, so the next day, you may feel blue in addition to everything else.  Physical activity helps raise those feel good hormones, endorphins, and boosts your energy.  The next time you go out and celebrate, drink water along with any cocktails to minimize a hangover; and have hydrating foods on hand and exercise, the day after!  You'll feel better and have a faster recovery.

How to Make Your Makeup Last All Night
Regardless of the makeup you like to wear, chances are, it can't stand up to several hours of partying--despite any marketing claims it boasts.  Firstly, start with clean, exfoliated, and moisturized skin.  If you can't get home to wash your face after work, at least clean it with a makeup removing cloth.  Don't add to your daytime makeup since you've produced several hours of oil and sweat, guaranteeing an early meltdown.  The cloths are good in a pinch and remove even waterproof mascara quite well.  Apply a primer before your foundation.  It reduces shine and allows makeup to go on smoothly and last longer.  Apply powder to set your foundation and once you have all your cosmetics on, you can add a finishing spray (found online and at cosmetic stores).  It's a lightweight mist that sets all your makeup, keeping powders from flaking off.  Take with you, face blotting paper (also called oil absorbing sheets).  These absorb oil and sweat but keep your cosmetics in place and are a better choice than applying more powder, which will leave your skin looking cake-ish.  The couple extra steps before you go out, will mean less maintenance later and more time to celebrate!

Potassium: Your Weapon Against Hangovers
Potassium is one of many electrolytes used by the body for various functions, like building proteins and muscle, breakdown and use of carbohydrates, and controlling the heart's electrical activity.  It's responsible for moving nutrients into cells and toxins out of them, which is why it's so important on a daily basis, but much more prevalent when fighting a hangover. 

To understand potassium's purpose better, it helps to know just what an electrolyte is.  They are minerals that carry an electric charge, called ions, in your body's fluids, such as blood.  According to HowStuffWorks.com, "they are what your cells (especially nerve, heart, muscle) use to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses (nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells. Your kidneys work to keep the electrolyte concentrations in your blood constant despite changes in your body."

Your body loses potassium in urine and sweat, especially if you are combining drinking and dancing (or other physical activity).  While eating a banana or other potassium rich food, won't cure your hangover, replacing this mineral can have you feeling better.  Even if you aren't hungover, but exercised or plan to melt on a beach somewhere, replacing your electrolytes is important.  Incorporate a yogurt smoothie, baked sweet potato fries, or lentil soup into your diet.  All of which will get you this ever important mineral.

Can you believe it's been 6 years since we opened our doors and brought our Unique, Fun & Effective Fitness Program to Metro Detroit!  It's time to CELEBRATE!  We will be pairing this celebration with our 2015 Student Recital.  If competing isn't for you, but you'd like to showcase your talent, consider performing for our 2015 Student Recital Saturday, March 14th 5-7pm in Madison Hts...we are still accepting student routines.  We plan to showcase Individual Routines, Group Routines, and Doubles...Pole & Aerial!  Let us know if you are interested in being part of the show!  Group routine content will be taught in part of PoleTRICKS and PoleFIT Classes.  We are also offering FREE RECITAL Practice which you can sign up for through the Mind/Body online scheduler.  Recital Practice will go over Group FIT & TRICKS routines as well as individual routine feedback time.  Private lessons including creative choreography assisted privates available...contact studio for details!
