Hi there, Beautiful!
Soon we will say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. If you got to enjoy lazy summer days, you may be feeling sleep deprived with your new fall schedule. Lack of sleep can throw off your hunger controlling hormones, causing weight gain. Learn how this happens and how you can get a better night's rest. If you take our PoleTRICKS classes, or will be soon, we have small guide to the different grip aids available. What works best, will depend on your chemistry and the environment, so it's good to know how each product is meant to be used. Also, for any of you students considering pole dance competitions, Pole Dance America will have a preliminary competition October 18th, here at the studio. This event benefits Gleaners Community Food Bank. Food donation bins will be at the studio, until November 14 (see Events below).
We look forward to seeing you soon!
*You've received our new monthly newsletter because we met you at a class or a party with the studio. We hope you'll stay a part of our community so that we can send you updates about exciting changes at PFR. If you don't wish to receive future mailings, please feel free to unsubscribe at the bottom of the page.

Sleep More, Weigh Less
September can be a month of big schedule changes. Perhaps you are a student or you have kids you need to get off to school or work is more demanding right now, whatever your personal story, lack of a good night's sleep can easily sabotage your weight loss. Getting less than the recommended 7-8 hours each night has a physiological effect that causes us to eat more and not just any food--we reach for the calorie-dense carbohydrates.
It sounds too good to be true doesn't it? Sleep more, weigh less, though it's correct. When your body is sleep deprived, it produces more of the hormone, ghrelin. Its function is to tell the body it's hungry. Your body also produces less of leptin. This tells your body when you've eaten enough. Have you ever noticed on days you are fatigued, meals are less satisfying? This hormonal imbalance can mean consuming 300 or more calories a day than when you're rested. Take note the next time you are sleep deprived and what you're craving.
According to research done at the University of Chicago in 2004, '"We don't yet know why food choice would shift," (Eve) Van Cauter (Ph.D., professor of medicine at the University of Chicago) said. "Since the brain is fueled by glucose, we suspect it seeks simple carbohydrates when distressed by lack of sleep." At the same time, the added difficulty of making decisions while sleepy may weaken the motivation to select more nutritious foods, making it harder to push away the doughnuts in favor of a low-fat yoghurt.' By 2011, new studies found less activity in the brain's prefrontal cortex, the area believed to be responsible for big decisions.
Another link to starchy cravings has to do with stress. Your adrenal glands secrete more adrenaline and cortisol when you are stressed and those can ruin your sleep cycle. According to AdrenalFatigue.org, "Cortisol plays an important role in maintaining blood sugar (glucose) levels around the clock. Although blood glucose is normally low by the early morning hours, during adrenal fatigue cortisol levels may not stay sufficient to adequately sustain blood glucose." Should your sleeplessness go on long enough, you may experience adrenal fatigue and if your body cannot regulate its glucose levels, it will desire the quick fuel it gets from carbs.
Doctors are also finding a link between poor sleep and diabetes. Fat cells react in a way similar to insulin resistance. As you already know, your body runs on glucose and "in insulin resistance, cells fail to use the hormone efficiently, resulting in high blood sugar," states WeMD's article, The Sleep-Diabetes Connection. The best thing to do when you aren't feeling rested and want to eat the donuts your co-worker brought in, is to be mindful and make the decision to eat something healthier, like an apple with a little peanut butter. Knowing what is happening to your body can make a big impact on how you handle it.
If you suffer from a lack of sleep, it is best to rule out any medical causes such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, or any other aliment. Try to stay on a nightly schedule, one that encourages relaxation. This means no work, homework, or other stressful task is done in your bed--keep your bedroom a work-free zone. Don't consume caffeine in the afternoon, as it will disrupt your sleep pattern and/or make it harder to fall asleep at a reasonable time. Also, stress relieving stretches done before bed, such as those in our Trainer's Challenge video (see right-hand column), can relax the body and mind for better rest. It isn't easy getting a full 7-8 hours of sleep, though try to get them as often as possible to stabilize your hormones. For more tips, check out this WebMD article.

Which Grip Aid is Best?
New students to our PoleTRICKS Classes often ask which grip aid is best, so they can have secure skin contact on the pole. This is a little like asking what's the best sports bra. It depends on several factors: your body's ph, the environment, the season, and hands vs. body. You will have optimal connection with the pole when there is a bit of humidity, the pole and body are warm, and your skin is slightly tacky from dried sweat, accomplished with either a previous workout or a heart-pumping warm-up. Fall and winter can be more problematic and grip aids are used a bit more during these seasons. The air is cooler, dryer, and so is skin. Some students also don't stick because they used lotion, while others found a water-based lotion that doesn't cause them slipperiness. We've broken down grip aids based on issues and you may find one or a combo of them will work for you. Sweaty Hands Wiping your hands off with a rag spritzed with rubbing alcohol may be all you need. Antiperspirants like Dry Hands or Tite-Grip will help control more excessive sweating. These are used in multiple sports and work well. They do not, however, make your hands tacky for a better hold. Dry Hands Mighty Grip is a powder that is sprinkled on to the palms (sparingly) and when hands are rubbed together, it creates a tacky surface. But this won't work for your body. Damp/Oily Skin (body) Best to use a rag with rubbing alcohol and follow up with one of the body grip aids ( below) if needed. Dry Skin (body) Dew Point Pole is a liquid spritzed onto the skin that dries with a light tackiness. Not too many students have success with this product, so it doesn't hurt to ask a fellow student if you can try theirs, should they have it. iTac2 Pole Dance Grip, a popular choice, is a beeswax-based ointment that creates very good skin tackiness. It can also be applied (sparingly) to the pole and since skin contact points change many times, it eliminates tacking up the entire body. It does not work for hands. Cramer Firm Grip is a rosin spray that mountain climbers use and another aerial student favorite. Like all the others, a little goes a long way and use it on your body only. You will stick to the pole and everything else with this, as it isn't always easy to clean off your skin. Another tip for good leg grip is to have a little stubble. Many students find skipping a shave valuable. You can also use this quick chart for future reference until you find your magic grip aid cocktail.

Sleep 'Detoxes' The Brain, New Research Suggest
When you sleep, your brain undergoes a mop-up process that removes waste products linked to Alzheimer's and dementia, according to new research... Read on...
Bedtime Stretches for Better Sleep
Taking a few minutes before bed to perform these easy stretches, in our video, can help loosen and relax your muscles for better sleep. Holding each pose for 30 seconds to two minutes will keep the muscle fibers from tightening back up after it. Also demonstrated, are massaging techniques on upper back and legs, using a foam roller and tennis ball if you need to relieve RLS (restless leg syndrome) or are tight from your workouts. Sleep well!
Side Spin Tutorial
The Side Spin is an easy and fun spin to master. You can take it to the floor or use it to transition into more advanced moves like Superman as your pole dancing progresses. This move may feel a little scary at first, as you let your body fall forward into the spin, but that will change with practice.
