Freedom From Misconceptions
July 2014
Monthly Newsletter

Happy Independence, Beautiful!

This is a wonderful time to appreciate and be grateful to all the service men and women that have kept our freedom intact.  It has had a ripple effect right down to how you enjoy working out.  While pole dancing is gaining acceptance, it still carries many misconceptions that keep people close-minded or too afraid to try it.  We'll address them, to encourage you or someone you may know, into giving pole dancing a try or finding a new appreciation for those who do it.  If you've been contemplating running an obstacle race for the first time, we share training and preparation tips.  Some PFR peeps will be in the Warrior Dash later this month (see Events) and would love for you to join them!

You probably noticed that our family has grown.  We welcome new instructors, Candice, Heather, and Stephanie--who will be teaching some daytime classes! Check out our Feature Class section for more!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
- Melanie & The PFR Team

*You've received our new monthly newsletter because we met you at a class or a party with the studio. Dismantling Pole Dancing Misconceptions

Anything taboo has misconceptions because it is only seen from one viewpoint.  When many people of think of pole dancing, smokey, low-lit strip clubs come to mind.  If you pole dance, you may have gotten that embarrassed snicker from someone you shared this about yourself.  This says more about them than you and is a learning opportunity for them.  Sometimes, the easiest answer is to reply, "It's gymnastics on a vertical pole,"--regardless of whatever style you dance.

Perhaps you haven't tried our pole classes yet.  Is some misunderstanding of what they are or what you aren't, holding you back?  Some people believe they are too big to pole dance--it's only a sport for thinner people.  This simply isn't true as you can see in this video.  If your goal is to get fit, it will get you fit.  If your goal is to lose weight, it can certainly help you there also, but don't believe you are banned from it because of size or age.

There are numerous reasons our current students take pole dancing classes--fitness lovers, performers, weight control, fun seekers, etc.--and their goals are just as equally diverse, but rarely do any of them come in and take to it naturally.  Those who do, most likely have had previous dance, gymnastic, or other sport's training.  Conditioning of muscles and grace are things that we all have had to work on, including instructors, when starting out.  Don't judge yourself or compare yourself to others.  You start at the beginning and where you end is only determined by you.

Yes, pole dancing, as most know it, has its roots in the strip clubs, but it has evolved into many styles other than exotic/sexy.  There's theatrical, gymnastic/athletic,  acrobatic (Chinese pole), and Mallakhamb--ancient Indian pole gymnastics used to train wrestlers.  There are also fusions of styles which make for some of the most exciting routines.  You will also come across pole dancers that incorporate ballet, modern, tap, hip hop, kata (martial arts) and other dances to their routines.  This is an aerial art that is only limited creatively, by the individual performing it.

This is also a great sport for men, as Kristian Lebedev explains in this news footage.  Occasionally, we have a male student or two.  Many men are intrigued once they see some of the male professionals' performances and yet they shy away from it.  Some are afraid of what their peers will think and say--and perhaps they're a bit intimidated by what the women are capable of doing.  If you know a man who would like to improve his strength and overall fitness, encourage him to contact us.  Men have a great advantage with their natural upper body strength and we love to help them discover their capabilities.

If you still receive criticism or fight your own misgivings about this aerial art, remember the Olympics are starting to see pole dancing as a sport.  True, the sexy style will not be permitted, but pole dancing itself, is getting respectable recognition.  Come in, learn the techniques, and your style, fitness, grace, and self-confidence will flourish, giving you the power to say, "Yes, I pole dance and I'm proud of it!"

Budgeting a Wedding

It's no question, weddings can come at a great cost.  With all the details in one, there are many places to save money and put an ease on the budget--having a DJ vs. a band, serving only wine and beer, forgoing a limo, etc. The first thing is to sit down and figure out how much you have for a wedding, factoring in any amenities/services friends and/or family can help you with before you pick out the dress and venue.  Perhaps you know a friend whose hobby is photography or an aunt who caters.  Here is a wedding budget worksheet to help you keep track and you never know, there may be something on there you hadn't thought of.  Whether you opt to save the money for a down-payment on a home or your funds are tight, Huffington Post shares wedding planners' secrets to keeping costs down.  It's your special day and it will still be memorable even without a $30,000 (or higher) price tag.

Fun in the Mud: Obstacle Race Preparation
Have you wondered what it would be like to run an obstacle race?  They can challenge you both physically and mentally, but also reconnect you to your inner child as you navigate water and climb obstacles.  These aren't events to be squeamish about getting good and dirty.  These are events to embrace the filth and wear it as a badge of honor!  With a little preparation you can have a successful and fun time.

Review the course and its location.  Before registering, check the obstacles (if information is available) to see if there are any you absolutely cannot do.  For instance, if you don't know how to swim, can you run around the pond?  In some cases yes, in others, no.  Where is the event?  Aside from distance from your home, is it a rural area? Will ticks and mosquitoes be a concern?  Bug spray at the start of the race will provide protection until you get a nice layer of mud on you.

Train your body.  These races mean your body will move in a multitude of directions, utilizing all muscles in various ways.  The repetitive motion of running will not fully prepare you for the race.  You need to be able to pull your body up, jump, shuffle, crawl, balance, etc.--anything is possible.  Incorporating burpees, pull-ups, squat jumps, and other exercises can prepare your muscles for whatever you will need them to do.  Take our Boot Camp classes and see Trainer's Challenge in the right-hand column for a training plan.

What to wearShoes are very important, but don't expect to salvage them after the run.  What to train in/race in depends on your race.  If you are going to be on an urban course, trail runners won't do, just like your basic running shoe will be hazardous on a rural one.  Skip cotton altogether.  Not only does it trap sweat, but once wet, it hangs heavy, stretches out, and if they're pants, they don't stay up and/or look like a full diaper.  Choose synthetics with quick drying features and nothing loose fitting.  You don't want to get caught on equipment or nature.

What to pack.  On the run itself, aside from your race number, you really don't want anything.  Some of us took a waterproof disposable camera, but either they got lost in the water or the pictures were ruined.  If you need anything medical (inhaler, EpiPen, etc.) protect and carry it to keep those things from happening.  Baby wipes were our favorite item, since mud got everywhere!  You will also need: safety pins (for your race number), towels, water, energy bars, change of clothes/socks/shoes, first-aid kit (blisters, cuts, scrapes), sunscreen, bug spray, garbage bags (for dirty clothes/towels), deodorant, sheet(s) (to create a private changing area), and anything else specific to you.  For any other questions you may have about running an obstacle race, check out mudrunguide.com.

Pole Move of the Month:

 Carousel Spin Tutorial

Carousel spin takes more strength in the shoulders than other spins because the legs are off the pole and the lower body swings out from it with legs in a kneeling, diamond position, as demonstrated in our video.  It can be done with either a regular grip or the more advanced split grip hold (see Split Grip Tutorial video).  Master basic spins like the fireman before attempting this spin--you do not want to sink into it, needing strong shoulders and upper back.  Enjoy!
