Summer is finally here and we can't wait to enjoy it!  We've brought back TeamFIT Boot Camp for some outside fun Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:15 p.mCheck out our Featured Class section for more information.  To keep your feet looking and feeling beautiful this season, we have many tips for you.  Also, aside from the obvious annoyances bugs cause, some carry dangerous diseases.  With simple actions on our part, we'll keep ourselves safe and prevent infections.  Read on for more and enjoy!

Keeping Your Feet Happy, Healthy, and Pretty    

Summer means cute sandals and bare feet and this can be stressful for some who are self-conscious of how their feet look.  Whether you have a desk job or one that keeps you on your toes, your feet are stressed by your daily life.  Runners can ruin their feet from the pounding and friction, but staying sedentary isn't any better.  Your muscles, tendons, and ligaments are weakened from lack of exercise, causing other issues, so proper foot care is vital this time of year. 

 

Whatever footwear you need, make sure you have a proper fit.  This will reduce friction and pinching, which will reduce blisters and hot spots.  If you are a runner, you will want a sock that fits properly too.  Using a product like Bodyglide on areas you know will rub can also help.  Take along dry socks and or alternate shoes  for after an extended workout (example TeamFIT Boot Camp) or a long day outside in shoes.  Wetness will only make friction worse.  

 

Reduce the amount of time you are barefoot outside and use sunscreen on exposed skin.  Wear flip-flops around pools and other public areas to lower exposure to plantar warts, athlete's foot, ringworm, or other infections.  You can use WebMD's Foot Problems and Care Directory for these and other issues you may experience.   

 

The heat makes foot swelling worse.  Start right by staying hydrated.  You should be drinking water regularly anyway to help your overall health.  Hydrate your feet from the outside in with a lotion formulated for them.  Getting one with peppermint in it has the added bonus of quickly cooling them down when soaking them isn't practical.

 

While you're applying the lotion, it's a fantastic time for you to give them a massage.  Massaging your feet increases blood flow, moves fluids away that have "pooled" in them, and relaxes muscles that have tightened from any stress ill-fitting--though cute--footwear has caused.   

Whether you get a professional pedicure or do it yourself, it's important to remember that any ugly callouses you have are protecting your feet.  Do not remove all of them, only clean them up.  If you remove all of the thickened skin, you will most likely feel pain in those area.  Also avoid scrapers that break the skin, because you increase your risk of infection.  Pumice stones will smooth the rough spots nicely after soaking.

 

Finally, exercises done barefoot will strengthen the muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  We have several classes done without shoes: PoleFIT classes, AerialYOGA, ACROFIT, and PoleTRICKS classes.  If you always wear shoes, you may find some discomfort going bare, but over time it will feel better and your balance and mobility will improve also.  And as with any other part of the body, stretching will help reduce injuries and make your feet feel better after a long day of being on them.

Outside TeamFIT Boot Camp Returns!

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:15 p.m.!

Weather permitting, we'll take you outside for a 60 minute workout that will get your body in top condition!  Bring your outdoor shoes, and water for this class.  Sunscreen and bug spray are up to you, but highly recommended to prevent avoidable issues. 

Work with a Certified Trainer in a Small Group Setting to REACH YOUR FITNESS GOALS...weight loss, muscle tone, stability, strength & endurance. Various Athletic Workouts to keep the body guessing!  Safe for all levels from obese/inactive to lean/active.  Progressions and modifications will be used to suit all levels.   See our class schedule for more info.

The In-Law Factor

Hopefully, if you're engaged, you've met your future in-laws and you all get along wonderfully.  If not, there are ways to keep your relationship with them and your fiance from becoming talk show worthy.  What no one says when you're getting ready for marriage, is that you're not just marrying the person you love, but you're also marrying their family.  You have your traditions, beliefs, and expectations as do they and this can cause conflicts.  Sit down with our fiance and discuss your wants, needs, and expectations of each others family.  Having clear boundaries will keep people from coming between you and yours, keeping you a team.  If, for example, your mother in-law intrudes by "helping" you when you haven't asked for it, your fiance is the one that needs to talk to her.  She may mean well, which is important to be thankful for, but she needs to know that if you two want assistance, you'll ask for it.  For more, check out Psychology Today's advice, including their 5 Tips for Winning Over Your In-Laws.

Protect Yourself Against Nature's Smallest Pests: Insects
They can send you running and screaming like a B-movie starlet or pounding them to obliteration with a magazine like a neanderthal.  Bugs.  Hundreds of thousands of times smaller than us, yet most of us see them as the ultimate monster and in some ways they are.  Their small size allows them to attack with little to no warning; some carry poison and some carry disease, though most cause annoying itchy welts.  Essential to our ecosystem, we won't be seeing their mass extinctions in our lifetime, so we must protect ourselves and our environment.

You might remember when you couldn't turn on the news without hearing about Lyme disease and that's been overshadowed by West Nile Virus (WNV).  Since mosquitoes get in your face, and you don't always see ticks in the grass, WNV may be more on your prevention radar and statistics show a significant drop in the disease.  In 2012 there were over 16,000 cases and over 1,400 deaths, nationwide.  By 2013, it dropped to over 2,400 cases and 119 deaths.  According to the CDC, 70-80% of people have no symptoms, while others experience flu-like symptoms and "Less than 1% of people who are infected will develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis (inflammation of the brain or surrounding tissues)."

Even though the risk of getting that neurological illness is miniscule, it's devastating to get.  Statewide, because of our dense population, we have a higher number of cases.  If you plan on traveling to southern regions of the country, the risk increases a lot (along with tick-borne diseases).  DEET is very effective against mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects, but you may want something more natural for you and your environment.  There are several recipes--most simple and inexpensive--you can try:
If we all stay diligent, WNV and Lyme disease cases should drop even more.  Before traveling, check what pests are common in the area, wear protective clothing, make sure you have the right/enough repellent, and use it!  Despite the best efforts, you're bound to get a few bites or even a sting this summer and most home treatments will relieve any itching or pain, allowing you to get back to having fun.

Water Park Safety
Water parks are a wonderful retreat from the summer heat, but not following the safety rules can turn that fun into a nightmare.  These amusement parks must adhere to the safety regulations of the World Water Park Association and may have a few of their own rules added to it.  Before you leave, review the guidelines of the park you chose.  And to make packing easier, here's a checklist of items to take.
 
Fitness Challenge:

Get up! Get out! And Move!    

Your challenge this month is to get outside and exercise preferably 3 times per week using the following simple workout: Jog for 1 mile. (If you can't run, a brisk walk, like your running late, will do). Perform 50 reps of the following: Push-ups, situps, & squats. (These reps can be broken up every 1/4 mile).
After 10-12 sessions (about 3 - 4 weeks) you will increase the jogging to 2 miles and the reps to 100.  After another 10-12 sessions, add another mile and another 50 reps. This will improve your cardio & strength, while constantly burning fat because your body isn't given the chance to level off.  If there is a playground nearby, take advantage of it and add a few pull-ups too.  You can also make this a family event by racing each other!  

    

Pole Move of the Month: 

 Snake Pose with Forward Fold (Bow) 

Snake Pose with a Forward Fold or a Bow is a nice pole trick addition to any pole dancing routine.  It can be done low or high on the pole, depending on your level, and looks particularly pretty on a spinning pole.  Demonstrated in this video on a stationary pole--don't attempt on a spinning pole until you have mastered it on stationary.  Enjoy!
