Disempower Poor Body Image Before it Disempowers You!    

Body image.  It's our perception of how we think we look.  We all have one of ourselves--positive or negative--whether we are women or men, because no one is exempt.  "In one study of college students, 74.4% of the normal-weight women stated that they thought about their weight or appearance 'all the time' or 'frequently.' But the women weren't alone; the study also found that 46% of the normal-weight men surveyed responded the same way," reports Brown University.  We are reminded everyday--everywhere--that beauty rules in this country, but at whose authority?  When we allow media, friends, family, and complete strangers to tell us we are imperfect, we give away our power.   

 

Poor body image can range from a minor annoyance to a paralyzing obsession.  When it starts, depends on the person and what they can remember or be a mystery, not starting with any one significant event.  The fact is, each one of us has something or some things we would like to change.  This is even true of people you may envy--models, Olympic athletes, or a pretty neighbor who seems to have it all.  Berating your flaws comes at a terrible cost to you alone.  You don't get stronger from it.  You don't become better.  You only break a little more.  

 

It's staggering how accepted body hating has become.  "A research study conducted by Cristin Runfola, Ph.D. and her colleagues at the University of North Carolina, published in the current issue of the Journal of Women and Aging, found that 12.2% of women over age 50 are satisfied with their body size," states Alexis Conason, Pys.D. in her Psychology Today article.  The telling fact there, is time will not make us love ourselves more, so we need to take control and stop body bashing ourselves now.   

   

The same Brown University article has several suggestions worth reading on how to combat poor body image such as: practice thought -stopping when it comes to negative statements about yourself, nurture your inner self, broaden your perspective about health and beauty,  stop comparing yourself to others, and move and enjoy your body (which our classes are perfect for).   

 

Be mindful to not waste your energy on the negative.   Remove images you may have posted of bodies you want.  They are only a reminder of what you wish you had and not your beautiful assets others are jealous of--despite what you may believe.  Focus on what you love about yourself, it could be your eyes, legs, hands, etc. Post these good affirmations where you will see them: the bathroom mirror, fridge, or the door you leave your home most from.  Repeated regularly over time, you will chip away at the negative view(s).    

 

Another simple change for a quick positive boost, is dressing for your body type and ignoring the size label in the clothing.  If something is ill fitting, it has the opposite, desired effect you will want, like if it's too small, you will look bigger.  Sizes are only a guide and change by designer/manufacturer and decade--they don't define you, nor are they a measure of your worth.  And finally, surround yourself with people who will lift you up, like those in our community, because we're all about positive reinforcement.

Keeping the Peace: When Bridesmaids Don't Get Along

Brides need to choose bridesmaids carefully, especially if they know a couple of women don't already get along.  If neither can be left out, she should sit down with them and make sure they can keep their grievances in check, reminding them that they are both special to her, but her day shouldn't be ruined because they can't be civil for a few hours.  If conflicts between bridesmaids arise during the planning process, the bride should establish rules.  Put a blanket ban for everyone on the subject; this way, she doesn't have to listen to  squabbling during what should be enjoyable events.  Lay down the consequences of breaking the rules.  If arguments can't be avoided, she needs to make the tough call and remove the person(s) from the party.  The Maid of Honor must also be clear about her duties to help run interference, so this can be avoided, and not drag the bride into a situation where she needs to pick a side.  The Made of Honor must also respect that others in the bridal party may want to help with planning and be flexible.  The bottom line, be an adult and act as such.  Talk privately over coffee with the person you butt heads with and come to a truce before things escalate beyond repair.  No ones wants the bride's wedding memories to be of a fight.  For more, check out this article, Proper Etiquette and Attitude of a Bridesmaid.

Exposed!  Sunshine and SPF Facts 
It's  skin cancer awareness month and soon you will be spending more time outside with warmer weather and longer days ahead.  This means more sun exposure, but how much is too much and what are the facts on SPF?  Do the higher numbers mean more protection?  If you believe you know all there is, test yourself with WebMD's quiz.

A very small amount of unprotected sun exposure is needed for your body to produce vitamin D.  Only 5 minutes daily if you are fair skinned, though you will need more, the darker your skin is.  Melanin is the body's natural UV protection and the more you have, the darker your skin.  This does not mean that anyone with a dark complexion is at less risk of skin cancer, it only means it will take longer for vitamin D to produce.  Spending too much time in the sun can also have an opposite effect and break the vitamin down, so use that sunscreen!  If you have a vitamin D deficiency, you can get it from supplements or foods like salmon, milk, and egg yolks.

When selecting a sunscreen, always choose one with SPF 15 or higher.  WebMD states, "SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburns, but not UVA rays, which are more closely linked to deeper skin damage. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer."  Since no sunscreen can block 100% of the rays, It breaks down like so: SPF 15-94% SPF 30-97%, and SPF 45-98%.  Whatever number you choose, select a water-resistant sunscreen and reapply at least every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.  It's your best defense against skin cancer without living in the shadows.  For a safe, natural looking tan, we provide Fantasy Tan airbrushing!  Information is in the right column.
