We hope you're having a wonderful start to this new year.  About this time, you may find your enthusiasm for working out, waning.  In this issue, we offer tips to fall in love with fitness so you can stay on a healthy track for life.  Trying different classes, like our new ACROFIT, will keep your body guessing and stave off boredom.  For more information on this beneficial class

Fall In Love With Fitness!    

It's not always easy to fall in love with exercise, so we're going to offer you some valuable tips to achieve this.

    

Try something new.  It isn't always fun to do the exact same thing, the same way, everyday.  It's even more difficult if you don't like the activity in the first place.  Start by signing up for a class or two you've never tried.  It will reduce boredom because your body and mind experience new ways of moving.  You'll work different muscles and keep your body guessing.  

   

Exercise with a friend.  Whether your workout is new or not, it's always more fun doing it with someone else.  Shared experiences create deeper bonds and you have someone to laugh with.  You'll release more endorphins and reduce stress more than with the workout alone.

 

Set goals.  Goals can range from being able to do ten regular push-ups to wearing a slinky new dress.  The key is to set small goals that lead to the big one and never stop finding new ones to conquer.  They will drive you forward and your progression will advance.

 

Take notice of your body's changes.  When you started out, did you get winded 5-10 minutes into the warm-up?  How has that improved?  If you are consistent with your fitness, you'll see and feel your body changing.  Keep track of your progress with photos, measurements, and journaling.  You'll be surprised how much can change in as little as 2-4 weeks.

 

Discover new aspects about yourself.  Self-discovery is a major component to staying with fitness.  Pole dancing isn't just popular because it's fun.  Many women have found their self-esteem soar the more they do it, despite wearing less clothing.  You'll impress yourself with what your body becomes capable of and be proud of it.  

   

See your workout as personal time.  Why shouldn't your "me time" be a workout?  When you come to the studio, you get a wonderful social experience and laughter, all while keeping healthy.  Exercise outside of the studio, can also give you time to reflect on yourself without being interrupted, like biking on beautiful spring day.

 

Fitness connects your mind and body.  Staying tuned to your progress will make you more aware of how your body moves, what it needs, and how it should feel at rest or in motion.  Your movements will become much more conscious, even if you are doing something as simple as pushing a grocery cart.

    

Now it's time to call up that friend and try a new class!  We'll look forward to seeing you both! 

Try Our New Class: ACRO FIT!

ACRO FIT is our new Arobatic, Control, & Resistance Options class.  Its purpose is to assist in building acrobalance for floor and pole routines.  Acrobalance refers to the body balancing moves (handstands, backbends, splits, etc.) you've seen in several performances from pole to cirque, done solo or with a partner.

We teach body-weighted, acrobalance techniques to work on stability, body control, and alignment.  There is an emphasis on core control, utilizing various equipment including the wall, Pilates chair, yoga blocks, stability ball, and many others.  In addition to learning how to engage your muscles for acro moves, you'll also do deep stretches to achieve better flexibility.  You'll reach your floor work and/or aerial routine goals faster by incorporating ACRO FIT into your fitness regimen!

Why Pole Dance In "Stripper" Shoes And Not Regular High Heels?

Those extra sexy platforms that you see pole dancers wear do serve several purposes; aside from making legs look longer.  The structure of a platform keeps your feet at a lower angle, reducing pressure on your knees and the shortening of your calf muscles.  A 6" platform with a 3" toe means you are wearing the equivalent of a 3" heel.  The ergonomically angled cut of the platform's toe, means you can perform several sexy moves by rocking over them or pivoting on them.  To properly walk in them, step toe-heel, never heel-toe--this will move your hips more sensuously and lower the chances of slipping.   The heels also "force" you to dance slower.  While there is a rubber sole to reduce slipping, your center of gravity is altered.  The slower moves are not only sexy, but they require more control, increasing strength.  Many of the "stripper" platforms are made with vinyl/plastic.  This protects the foot and provides grip when climbing or doing other pole tricks.  So, buy a pair and try them out in our TMI FIT Class!

  

Helpful hit: Heat the vinyl with a hairdryer before putting the shoes on.  The material will expand and once on, it'll cool and mold to your foot for a more comfortable fit.  For more tips on buying high heels, click here.

3 Heart Loving Super Foods

There are many foods that are so good for our bodies they are sometimes labeled as "super".  Salmon, spinach, and oranges are three we'd like to share for their heart beneficial properties.

Salmon is loaded with anti-inflammatory fatty acids and antioxidant vitamins and minerals.  The omega-3 fats feed our brain, which is 60% fat, and helps lower depression.  These fats also reduce hypertension, heart disease, and are proven to improve blood flow.  In just 4oz. of broiled Chinook Salmon, there are 29 grams of protein!  A fantastic food to help recovering muscles. 

How to select:Wild-caught salmon has a richer color and flavor than the farm-raised.  Health concerns have also circulated over the farm-raised fish, so buy wild-caught.  Choose a reputable market that has the fish on ice and not prepackaged in plastic.  Fresh salmon should smell like seawater, not fishy.
 
Spinach is nutrient dense with 13 flavonoids or anticancer agents and antioxidants.  It is a heart healthy food because it's high in vitamin C (water-soluble antioxidant) and beta-carotene (fat-soluble antioxidant).  This combination prevents cholesterol from oxidizing, leading to atherosclerosis.  It's folic acid and vitamin B6 protect artery walls from damage by lowering homocysteine levels.
 
You already know oranges are high in vitamin C and how that helps your heart.  Its many antioxidants also protect other cell structures from damage, including DNA.  With only 62 calories for a medium-sized orange, it makes an ideal addition to a weight control meal plan.
 
Try this broiled salmon with herb mustard glaze and spinach mandarin salad for a heart healthy dinner.

The Human Balance System
Our sense of balance is controlled many ways, one of which is our vestibular system within our inner ear.  This complex, though tiny structure, is what alerts our brain when we are no longer upright.  It's also the reason we get disoriented when we are upside down.  This article and animated video explain how it works.
 
Fitness Challenge:

SurgeFIT Circuit  

Our newest calorie blasting SurgeFIT classes will keep you on your fitness track.  If you haven't tried the class or need a supplemental workout for the week, check out this video of a circuit you can do at home.  There are 10 exercises paired into 5 "stations".  Perform each exercise within a station for 20 seconds with 10 seconds of rest in between, 5 times.  Take a 30 second rest between stations. It takes about 30 minutes to complete.  *SurgeFIT BOOT CAMP now has a 6th BONUS round on T/TH @ 6:30pm at the studio. 
  

Pole Move of the Month: 

 Pencil Spin

The Pencil Spin is a challenging spin that improves your upper body and core strength as you perfect it.  For beginners, just getting a little air under your feet is a wonderful start. Remember, it isn't a spin that gets several rotations around the pole like others do.  Demonstrated, in this video, are two grips on both a stationary pole and a spinning pole.  The grip depends on what you want to transition into from the spin.
