With So Much Gratitude
November 2013
Monthly Newsletter
Thank you, Fabulous!

This year we are grateful for many things, like clients such as yourself that make PoleFIT Revolution successful, not just as a business but also as a community.  Many wonderful friendships are born here and so we are particularly grateful that one of our clients, who's become a very dear friend, caught her breast cancer early.  Sarah has graciously agreed to share her journey so far, because if it saves just one person, it will have been worth it.  The disease doesn't discriminate and it will touch everyone, in some fashion, in their lifetime.  Please read on, especially if you believe yourself to be too low of a risk for the cancer, since the younger you are the more aggressive it is.  Our lives are brighter because of the beautiful people in them and we all want them with us for as long as possible.  Sarah's absence is felt in classes, but thankfully, not our lives.  We look forward to when she can return to her aerial arts and pole!

Our FALL RECITAL is November 16th.  Students friends and family, join us for a wonderful night of entertainment as our students and instructors show off their amazing skills!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
-Melanie & The PFR Team

Beating Breast Cancer: Sarah's Journey

Sarah is a beautiful and strong, young woman and for anyone who's met her, they know she's also those things on the inside. To those who don't know her, she seems to have it all. What people don't see is her life changing experience--a woman who's beaten breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy to eliminate its chances of returning. While her journey isn't over, she has graciously agreed to share her story in hopes that it will help other young women be proactive and check themselves regularly, because early detection is crucial. At only 32 years of age, Sarah didn't expect the aspirin sized lump--near the side of her breast, she discovered in January of this year--to be a cancerous tumor. Though breast cancer runs in her family, her age didn't send her into a panic--after all, 80% of women, under the age of 50, don't have cancerous lumps. But, the little known fact is: the younger you are, the more aggressive the breast cancer.

We first met Sarah two years ago in an AerialYOGA class. She had lost her job and gone through a difficult breakup, so she "wasn't in a good place in [her] life." After seeing a Good Morning America segment on the benefits of aerial yoga, she did a Google search and found us. She was understandably nervous her first class--first time in the studio and no friends were able to join her--but she fell in love with it. The class had her "laughing and feeling like a five year old," so she continued with it for another three months; loving our community's fun and encouraging atmosphere, while increasing her upper body strength and overall flexibility. During the studio's Halloween party of that year, she won a gift certificate for her sexy costume and used it towards pole classes that Melanie (studio owner) had wanted her to try. Sure enough, she became hooked to pole and further inspired when she saw our instructor, Sara, do an Extended Butterfly trick. "I don't realize I'm working out. I have fun," Sarah tells us with a glowing smile, about taking our classes. So much fun in fact, she has managed to recruit some more regulars to our growing family.

Sarah's lump continued to remain the same for a couple of months and she chose to have it checked with her yearly in March; however, bronchitis struck that month, sending her to the hospital. While there, a young nurse related her own story about finding a lump in her breast, and though hers was benign, she urged Sarah to get checked. Thankfully, she did, because by April it had doubled and her doctor ordered a mammogram. "[My doctor] advised me that Beaumont is close to home, but is known to do a same day biopsy, and she would prefer I see a specialist before a biopsy was scheduled. When I went for my mammogram, Beaumont did want to do a biopsy on the right breast, but I refused based on the fact I had yet to see a doctor there--only techs." This made Sarah uncomfortable and she "knew [she'd] want to research [her] doctor first...based on 'What if it was cancer?'" She decided on the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center because it's #14 in the country for treating cancer and being a research hospital, she liked that they have a Tumor Board to design a treatment plan for her most successful outcome.
In May, U of M looked at the Beaumont mammogram films, but also did their own...then recommended biopsy in both breasts because there were three tumors in the right and two in the left." Her diagnosis was Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, Triple Negative, Stage T2N0M0, Grade 3 cells in her right and benign in her left. "Due to the multiple tumors and the aggressive nature of my cancer, a double mastectomy was the recommendation for me. I had been hopeful for a lumpectomy, so this news was very hard to hear. Control [and] hope, for a lumpectomy or nipple sparing mastectomy, was taken away based on my age, diagnosis, family history, and fibrocystic breasts." A diagnosis--and treatment plan--that put her "bucket list front and center."

A mastectomy, let alone a double, isn't an easy thing for any woman to hear; especially when you're young, single, and your future--when it comes to starting a family--unknown. Testimonials she watched, all had women in their 50's and 60's that had had children and husbands. The phrase, "my husband loves me regardless" became repetitive. Though the information was meant to help her cope, it made her feel more isolated. It's been difficult finding young women like her, facing the same challenges and health scares, to talk to.

"The age of 30 is different than 50," Sarah, states. "There's less confidence and having no husband or children makes things different." Also, "there are several types of breast cancer and which one affects the course of treatment that can alter your body permanently." Choice and control are taken away, making the experience harder. "Breast cancer takes away what society bases you as a woman: children, breasts, and hair--including eyebrows and eyelashes. It's a humbling experience. Everything society expects to see is gone. Because of this," Sarah continues, "it's been difficult being younger and single." To protect her ovaries (and fertility) from chemo, she has been forced into menopause with hopes that in 3-9 months after the infusions, her body will return to a normal cycle. If it doesn't, she has taken the extra step and harvested her eggs.

Though she doubted she'd ever have the strength for it, Sarah exceeded her Extended Butterfly goal, after a couple of years, by getting Aysha (see picture)! It was a truly proud moment for all of us, as it was the Saturday before her double mastectomy surgery. The strength from aerial classes and her healthy eating habits gave her an advantage with surgery recovery. She had a "simple" mastectomy and was able to start the breast reconstruction process immediately with expansion implants that she amusingly calls "turtle shells" because of their shape and hard texture. And since her lymph nodes proved clear of cancer, she became cancer free that day--no radiation needed!

The other mastectomy patients were surprised by her quick ROM (range of motion) recovery. Always adhering to doctor's orders, Sarah had to start moving just two days after the procedure, using their exercises. Four weeks later, the plastic surgeon released her for PT (physical therapy), which consisted of specific massages and many moves we perform in PoleatesFIT class. The goal: to relax and release the muscles to regain flexibility, because the surgery led to problems with her back, hips, and arms, up to the elbows. For example, she would compensate a reach with her arm by holding out her chest. To further aid her recovery, the plastic surgeon eventually released her for massages (something she got regularly to assist in muscle recovery after aerial training). Sarah believes "your mind, body, and spirit are intertwined and you can't heal one or the other." Massage helped relax her mind and body, so healing was faster.

Visits from Sarah's family and friends keep her spirits up and prevent her from becoming a hermit. As we all know, the worse we feel--for any reason--the more likely we will stay on the sofa. The therapy was difficult and painful, but she was released from that too and when her days allow--meaning the effects from chemo the most bearable--she continues her rehabilitation with ballet classes and private Pilates sessions with Melanie. These have increased her ROM further and helped her pay attention to keeping proper form when reaching, standing, and working out.

Recently, Sarah started her second and final type of chemotherapy. This, in combination with another drug, causes bone pain. So far, she has been able to manage it and is on track to be finished with chemotherapy before Thanksgiving and that would make this year's very special! Her journey doesn't end there, but it's one part we all can't wait to be over. To stay motivated, she keeps the picture of her Aysha in her living room and hopes that when she can come back to our classes, she'll regain her self-confidence in her body. She's also motivated by wanting to perform a Lyra and pole routine for an audience. Her stabilizer muscles are weak right now, but her love of aerial arts means "when you love something, you work towards it, making it a reality."

Check yourself and know your body. Your breast tissue extends from your collar bones to down below the breast and around up into the armpits; so feel the surrounding areas, not just your breasts. If you question anything, get it checked out, because the earlier the diagnosis, the better your chances are for survival and that's something to be grateful for!

WE LOVE YOU, SARAH, and THANK YOU!

When Someone You Know Has Cancer
When times get tough for friends, family, and co-workers, you naturally want to help in any way you can.

Usually all you need to do is provide a sympathetic ear or a shoulder to cry on. Or perhaps a night on the town or a good joke is what it takes. In tougher situations, you might need to decide whether to make a loan or to let someone move into your guest room a while.

That about covers most cases. But forget about "most cases" when it comes to learning that someone you know has cancer...Read more.
