Happy Halloween, Boo-tiful!
Tis that time of year again for our favorite frightful night! Though it isn't fear of ghosts, goblins, or other monsters that make us shake; it's the fear of being vulnerable. This month we're addressing the many excuses we hear, on why people haven't taken a pole class, to lessen their anxiety and go for it. For those students performing in the recital, we understand your trepidation to do so and offer tips to reduce your stage fright. And there's still time to sign up (ALL skill levels) to perform in our FALL RECITAL, November 16th. It's a wonderful experience and fabulous way to show your friends and family your amazing skills!
Our very long awaited exterior facade is being installed! Be aware that this can upset parking in front of the studio. You may, for a short time, need to park in the side parking lot West of our parking lot next to the party store. We're sorry for the inconvenience!
We look forward to seeing you soon!
*You've received our new monthly newsletter because we met you at a class or a party with the studio. We hope you'll stay a part of our community so that we can send you updates about exciting changes at PFR. No More Excuses!
There's no shortage of excuses when people are afraid to try something new that can make them feel vulnerable. Ironically, while pole dancing can trigger those feelings, it's a very empowering activity. This may seem like an oxymoronic statement since the workout attire is less than what's worn for most others and it can require a person to tap into their sexy side--so taboo in today's society--though it's more optional. If you're one of those people that has what's sounds like a good excuse, to avoid trying this aerial art, we want to dispel it.
I'm not sexy. Right away we know that isn't true. Being sexy isn't something most people are taught growing up. From parental influence to the mixed media messages, it's harder to discern what is acceptable and what isn't, so we've become very repressed. No one in our classes is judging you and everyone has a different level of comfort when it comes to sexy moves we teach. Never compare yourself to others, as that only cheats yourself. Class by class, you'll be freer and more confident enriching your life beyond our studio.
I'm too intimidated. Aren't we all when we want to try something new? Our beginner level classes are designed to help you gain basic skills and strength for the more advanced classes. Everyone starts at the beginning and unless someone has a history of gymnastics, dance, or other intense sport, they can't expect to get every move the first time. It's a process. Any of our veteran students will tell you what's the most challenging thing for them and what took them the longest to accomplish. There's a great sense of pride when we hit those goals and we applaud them, so we'd like to applaud you too!
I'll look stupid. It's what keeps us humble, right? Again, no one is judging you in class. We ALL make mistakes or have a botched attempt at something, making us look silly at times. The best thing to do is laugh about it. Imperfections are part of learning and never a reason to stress about. The more you laugh, the more you relax, and the more you'll have a great time!
I'm too big. We understand that the more weight a person has, it may bring an additional challenge and some positions may be more uncomfortable. This isn't a reason to avoid such a fun activity that will help shed pounds. The more fun you have doing any exercise, the more likely you will continue with it. If you have a challenge getting your feet off the ground, then make that your 1st goal. It may take you longer then your 120lb girlfriend but the reward will be that much sweeter. In the grand scheme of things your body will adapt no matter what your size and it will happen faster then you think if you are determined and do the work. We will help you progress in a safe manner at the studio so leave that to us. You will gain strength, you will advance, and you will love your new confidence. Make pole dancing a part of your new healthy lifestyle and when people ask you for your secret, tell them with pride!
I'm too old. Phooey. Life is short and you shouldn't let a number determine what you should or shouldn't do. Do what you want and have some fun! We work with people at their level and let us know if you have a physical limitation. Keeping you safe is number one, but don't let the fact that you're __ years old mean you can't pole dance!
I have bad knees. We don't doubt this can be a challenge. Since all knee issues are not created equally we can help you case by case to feel more comfortable. 1st and foremost feel free to WEAR KNEE PADS to class while you are learning. As you build strength and learn movement and flow we will teach you tricks to place less weight on your knees and how to use the pole to get off the ground in a safe and pain free manner. If all else fails there are always modifications and other options...in the mean time wear those knee pads...make them look even cuter with a fun pair of leg warmers or knee socks or wear them under your pants during FIT classes.
I don't have upper body strength. Many women don't, but what better way to gain it than by pole dancing? By lifting your own body weight and learning how to properly use your muscles on spins and tricks, you will strengthen more than with traditional weight lifting, which focus on large muscles. You'll strengthen all those stabilizer muscles that keep your joints strong and lessen injury. Plus, it's much more enjoyable than counting reps and sets. The act of trying only makes you stronger and better, just as inaction leaves you right where you're at.
I have no money. Perhaps, but make sure you have a written budget first. If you do, is there anything you're paying for that you don't use or is a bad habit? Prioritizing and reallocating funds is a little like getting a raise. It'll also make you feel good to have control over your finances when you do so. Your health--both physical and mental--is a priority, so eat out less, give up cigarettes, give up a bar night here and there-- anything--so that you can have some fun spinning around the pole!

Taking Back Control: How to Reduce Stage Fright
If you were to ask several people what their greatest fear is, public speaking would probably outnumber death. This is rather silly since the one action is momentary and the other is permanent. While there's no magic wand to erase stage fright, there are many tricks to lessen this anxiety. Sometimes simply knowing everyone else who is performing is also afraid helps and knowing everyone--even audience members--can relate to it. Try to remember that perfecting, NOT perfection, is your goal. You will stress yourself out unreasonably even during practices if you focus on making no mistakes. Remember to breathe and enjoy the music you chose and the moves you perform to it and they will come across to the audience.
Practicing will be your biggest ally in your fight. Not only will you receive assistance in our ShowFIT classes, but you will be dancing for small groups many times and those will help you relax, as you gain confidence in your routine and skills. To further help you take control of your fears, here are a couple of articles from WebMD and the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America) with several suggestions to find what works best for you. You'll be proud of yourself for those few minutes you share your talent, so practice, practice, practice!
