Be A Successful Loser For Life!  With Weight Loss That Is   

If you've reached your weight loss goal, congratulations!  We hope you did it by altering your lifestyle with healthy foods and fun workouts so that your new habits are sustainable.  One reason people fail at keeping off the pounds, is because they chose to crash/fad diet.  Once they start eating more normally or go back to old, bad habits, the unwanted fat returns.  If you are on your weight loss journey, this article will help you too, because you will have the knowledge to take the most important step: weight maintenance.

This phase you are entering, has two components for success: staying active and having a strong support system.  These you will get at PFR.  Challenge yourself by taking a class you think is "too hard" or add another to your routine.  The people you meet here can become some of your closest friends and supporters.  You already have some things in common: the studio, getting/staying healthy, enjoying a good laugh, and many more you'll discover each time you return.  Whoever said your workouts had to be boring?  Wouldn't you rather do them with friends than alone in your living room?

 

After sacrificing favorite junk foods, occasional binges, and relaxing for sweaty workouts, you might feel entitled to a reward and you are! Try to keep that reward of the non-food kind.  A rich meal at your favorite restaurant, too many indulgences on a vacation, or a continual reduction in workouts per week can start you on a path that undoes all your hard work.  Treat yourself to a massage, mani-pedi, new outfit, or something like jet skiing since we are in summer.

 

Important things to remember for maintenance are calculating your caloric needs, knowing your trigger foods/ moments you will overeat, varying your activities to reduce boredom, and eating many different fresh foods.  The methods you used to lose the fat may not necessarily be the same for keeping it off.  This article from SparkPeople lists the active commonalities successful maintainers have and this WebMD article lists the everyday habits, like journaling, that keep you on track.

 

Now is the time to make a plan for what will become a lifestyle for you.  Look at our schedule and find a package that encompasses the classes that will keep you challenged.  Eat what's in season and try new recipes so you don't eat the same foods over and over again (even if they are healthy).  Taste.com not only tells you what's in season per month, but also why it's good for you, buying/storing tips, preparation, and recipes.  Decide what your new goals will be and how you will reward yourself.  Do you want to complete 20 regular push-ups, try rock climbing, or  one of our aerial classes?  Whatever they may be, your goals will propel you forward.  Congratulations again and enjoy the fit new you!

Bachelorette Party Etiquette  

Bachelorette etiquette is always expected, but not too many really know what that entails.  It's important to remember that the party is intended for the bride and if you aren't agreeable to the plans, you shouldn't bend them to suit your wishes.  You have the option of bowing out with a polite explanation or to join in and not let your negative feelings ruin everyone else's fun.  If you choose to not join in, take the bride out for a meal, buy her a gift, or offer to help with the wedding like being in charge of the guest book or gifts.  These rules from BASHelorette are very helpful for bachelor party planning also.  And always review policies at any venue you are attending like PFR so you know how to conduct yourself for a fun and trouble-free good time!

Tips For A Healthy Vacation

Vacations are a time to relax, let loose, and forget reality, right?  Well, sort of.  If you let loose too much, with your healthy habits, you may return home with regrets.  The food temptations are incredible and trying everything is highly desirable, which can lead to a 5-10 pound weight gain in one week.  Unless you are hiking the Appalachian Trail, it's unlikely you will be more active on your trip than at home.  Strolls on the beach and lazy swims don't make up for the extra alcohol, buffet meal, and starchy goodness consumed.

WebMD has 10 tips to help you eat healthier on your getaway.  Don't toss your eating plan entirely out the window.  Watching portions, journaling your foods, and allowing yourself a daily treat, means you will not only enjoy your time away, but your return home too.  After all, what good is a vacation if all you are going to do is kick yourself in the butt for gaining a few pounds?  Dr. Oz has some more helpful tips like eating yellow, orange, and red produce.  They are high in the antioxidant lycopene.  It "helps shield cells from DNA damage caused by the sun's UV rays."

 

If you are flying, as many of us are for the Las Vegas Pole Expo in September, some simple actions can ensure you arrive healthy and rested to your destination.  Before getting on the plane and breathing in the recycled air, take an anti-cold preventative like Vicks Early Defense or Airborne to help bolster your immune system.  That air is also very dry and you will dehydrate inside and out, so drink plenty of water.  Get up and move about to stretch your legs to prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT or blood clots in the legs), which is life-threatening.  (It's also important to get out and move on long car rides for the same reason).  For more on healthy flying, like avoiding jet lag, check out this Medical News Today article.  The steps you take to prevent common problems, will help you enjoy your time wherever it is you go.

Fitness Challenge:

Running Drills to Reduce Knee Pain

Training for a 5k?  If you find running has left your knees in pain, as it does for PFR owner, Melanie; try her running drills she used while training for the Warrior Dash.  She explains in this video easy methods to keep your cardio up for endurance with less impact on your joints and with reduced tightness in your muscles.  You may feel a little silly doing a few of these, but it's worth the results and if you train with a friend, you can have good laugh in the process!

Backwards Shoulder Roll Tutorial  

This simple backwards somersault over the shoulder (also referred to as the Fish Flop) is a sexy way to change directions while doing floor work.  It can be done without the use of a pole, so there's no reason you can't practice this at home if you don't have one.  Follow the directions carefully to prevent any neck strain and enjoy!

This NOVEMBER we are having another student recital!  Students of ALL levels are encouraged to participate for the fun experience to share with your family and friends!  Show them what you've learned and get them excited to take classes!  Do a solo routine, doubles routine and or let us know if you are interested in joining one of our group performances.  There will be room for all levels and skill capabilities to perform.  More info to come.
