We hope you've been enjoying your summer so far. There are so many fun things happening this time of year and one of the big ones: barbecues. Whether you have only one to attend or a few hundred, we have healthy tips for you to prevent overeating and for selecting the best foods.
  

Also, our new AerialTRICKS class starts this month! We're very excited to offer this total body conditioning class for people in all levels of fitness. It's a great way to strengthen and tone your muscles in a fun and exciting way with several aerial apparatuses. 

 

In the very near future, our long awaited exterior facade will be installed!  Be aware that this can upset parking in front of the studio.  You may, for a short time, need to park on the side of the building by the party store.  We're sorry for the inconvenience!  For more on the class and the benefits of muscle conditioning, please read on!

Muscle Condition Without the Fear of Bulking Up  

Often, women avoid workouts using any form of weight resistance/training for fear of bulking up. It's true that there are some professional women pole dancers who have substantial muscles, this however is not achieved easily. It requires an intense weight training regimen, diet, and supplementation. Do not worry. You do not have the hormonal composition like men to get the same appearance and "when you lift heavy, meaning over 85 percent of your maximum, the primary stress is placed on the nervous system, not the muscles," as explained in this article by Shape Daily. 
 

Aerobic exercise is excellent for burning calories, but if you aren't strengthening your lean muscle mass, you are missing out on killing a few more of them when your body is at rest.  As this Los Angeles Times article states, "a pound of muscle burns six calories a day at rest and a pound of fat burns about two calories a day... muscle is three times more metabolically active at rest than fat..."  While this doesn't mean you can eat more, it does mean and extra boost to achieve any fat loss efforts by balancing out your workouts.

 

Pound for pound, muscle versus fat isn't equal.  The muscle takes up far less space than the same weight in fat; and will equal smaller inches on the tape measure.  If you are thin, without any discernible muscle tone, and start training your muscles, they will get bigger.  However, you are still not bulking up.  Any increase in measurements that might happen, will be very small and the new fit look you're creating is sexy!  A study found that the average woman only gains 3.1 pounds of muscle over a ten week time, exercising three times a week.  Those strengthened tissues are going to prevent injuries, increase healing time when injured, improve balance, and prevent osteoporosis for an overall improved life.

 

That muscle also plays and important role in glucose levels.  If you currently take classes like our Boot Camp or PoleFIT, you may have noticed how much healthier you feel.  Your body has become more insulin sensitive.  This "...means you handle glucose well, which means less dietary glucose becomes body fat and less insulin is required to handle your business," says Mark Sisson of Mark's Daily Apple.  So, anyone susceptible to diabetes or has it, will benefit from getting stronger.   

 

By taking our new AerialTRICKS INTRO class, your entire body will get fully conditioned and balance out an aerobic workout routine. For instance, it'll improve your core--not just the abs, but your back muscles too. Strengthening these improves balance and reduces back injuries, which are all too common when people opt for cardio-only exercises like running. Sure, your cardiovascular health will be quite good, but it won't prevent a pulled muscle when you lift a heavy grocery bag from your trunk.

 

Our stability muscles are those small muscles fixed between two (or more) bones making up joints.  These play a vital role in our future, because the stronger they are now-and keep them that way-the less likely we will have mobility issues in our old age.  If those muscles are weak, they're more susceptible to injury.  Even the smallest accident can lead to reoccurring problems for years. 

 

Finally, your future is undetermined; yet there are actions you can take to ensure a more positive and active one. Weight training has substantial benefits to prevent osteoporosis, diabetes, reduced arthritis pain and depression to name a few in this article from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Enjoy a Barbecue Without Regret

Barbecues are summertime traditions and can be health busters. One, you can consume enough calories to undo your weight loss efforts for an entire week. Two, you may have several to go to over a short period of time. And three, ignoring correct portion sizes and indulging in the plentiful comfort foods can derail good habits you might've started. You can and will have a healthy good time selecting the best foods at any foreseeable cookout with a few easy tricks.

 

Whether or not you are familiar with the food that will be served, don't show up famished. Before you leave, eat a small apple or a garden salad (sans creamy dressing). Bring a veggie platter with hummus, for dipping. It's not only thoughtful, but a tasty, guaranteed way you'll get your vegetables in. Avoid as many creamy dishes as possible and go easy on the baked beans--an excellent source of fiber, but also calories. Your carbohydrate consumption will be high enough, so forgo the bun, too. It may seem odd and nontraditional at first, but it's better than doing ten minutes of burpees to make up for it!

 

Aside from the calories in alcohol, it lowers our inhibitions, making it easier to eat more. Add in socializing and we have zero idea if we ate one, two, or three handfuls of chips (another good reason to bring a veggie tray). Take small portions of any food, especially if there are multitudes you want to try. After you are done eating, wait twenty minutes before going for seconds of anything. It gives your body time to register it has food and in that time, you may be distracted enough to forget you wanted more.

 

If the barbecue doesn't have any activities going on, invite people to go for a walk with you or bring along an outdoor game. Croquette will do or bring a ball to keep everyone moving. Using these simple and effective tips will keep your healthy efforts in check so that you can avoid regret and extra time exercising off the indulgences!

Fitness Challenge:

Shoulder Warm Up & Stretch Exercises

These range of motion exercises are highly recommended for anyone!  It is great for those taking any Pole Fitness Class, AerialYOGA, AerialTRICKS or anybody who weight trains, because it warms and stretches the muscles that can get tight and need extra attention in those workouts.  Do 20 reps of each exercise and be sure to move in both directions.  It is also important to stay in a pain-free range of motion in effort to repair the area and prevent further damage.  Use them as a warm-up, cool-down, or recovery on your days off!
