It may be ninety degrees outside, but in the studio it's cool and comfortable!  We have a new AC system, so take a break from the humidity by taking our classes, like AerialYOGA or our new AerialTRICKS conditioning class that's coming soon! 

This month we tell you how to avoid gaining pounds after starting a workout plan, so that you see the results you desire.  We also share tips on beating the heat with supplements, becoming a runner, and throwing a successful outdoor party.  We hope you enjoy!

Numbers on the Scale Rising After Starting an Exercise Regimen? The Usual Suspects  


Nothing is more discouraging than standing on the scale after spending a few weeks exercising and seeing the numbers increase.  It's makes giving up easier, since you tried it and it didn't work, so why bother?  The reason is for you: your body, your mind, and your longevity.    The usual suspects for such a gain are: compensatory eating, inadequate workouts, muscle gain, improper nutrition,  and stress.

Keep track of your calories and what you put into your mouth to avoid compensatory eating.  This is a psychological culprit to excess pounds.  Don't eat to compensate for that one workout or eat with the mentality "I exercised today, so I deserve a second helping."  Learn how many calories you need to reach your goal and keep a journal of what you consume.  This will help stay aware and accountable for the choices you make, showing you where to improve.

Many workouts aren't nearly as effective as most people believe.  For example, walking for 30 minutes will only expend about one hundred calories.  This isn't enough to see much, if any, decrease on the scale, though it's a beneficial activity.  Circuit training with intervals of strength and cardio will burn more in less time and keep that fire going.  Our early morning Boot Camp class will wake up your metabolism, burn calories, and give you energy for your day!
 
The scale will not tell you the entire story of your fat loss efforts: it's only one number that encompasses fat, muscle, bone, water, and organs.  Take measurements at the same time you weigh yourself--every few weeks--and contact us for getting your body fat percentage calculated with the skin fold calipers.  This will tell you in the future whether your weight increase is due to muscle gain or not.

Our bodies need balanced nutrition to function and when it receives too much fat, protein, or carbohydrates, it will store it as fat for leaner times.  This was great for our ancient ancestors, but with food on every corner in America, most of us won't starve.  The proper balance for you is unique, though you can use this guide as a starting point.

Lastly, excess calories aren't always the reason for added pounds.  Stress (hormones/medications) is a common factor, making it imperative to do things to lessen it:  take our AerialYOGA class, talk regularly with friends, factor in one fun activity into your day, and try to get enough sleep.  Your hormones can be thrown off easily and by counteracting the negative with positive experiences, your body can calm down.

With some diligence on your end, you will see the number decrease and the inches come off.  You will feel better, have more energy, and increase your wonderful life by not giving up!

Tips for a Successful Summer Party

Summer parties come in many forms and we'll guide you through the most popular.  If it hasn't started yet, your calendar will soon be booked with gatherings from family reunions to bonfires with friends.  Bringing a dish-to-pass is customary for these.  You will want to select food that has universal appeal and transportability.  Making the food yourself--rather than picking something up from the store--is also a heartfelt gesture.  These recipes from Delish will have you receiving praise from your loved ones!  

 

If you're going to host an outdoor party, there are many things to plan out, though none are complicated. Marie Claire has a handy guide that will help you with everything: theme, grilling issues, cocktails and much more!  Also, these picnic tips will help you organize and select the right foods for eating outdoors whether it's at a beach or your backyard.  Remember, the heat can make certain foods hazardous to eat if they aren't kept at the right temperature.  Finally, if you aren't sure what to serve that will keep your healthy lifestyle in check, here's a list from Health (with recipes).  You, nor your guests, will feel deprived with such delicious, classic choices!
