College Updates for Juniors and Sophomores

We made some adjustments to our Parent Ed Night schedule so that we could fit in the College Case Studies night two weeks ago. College Case Study night was a huge success - thank you to all who participated!

We have postponed the April 9th Parent Ed Night.  If you are curious to learn more about the college process and the specific support that Summit provides, please join us for College Workshop Night on April 30th from 7:00-8:30 pm at Summit Prep. We will offer an overview of the college process and then provide a choice of several workshops so you can differentiate your experience to meet your family's needs in a smaller group setting. Here are the workshop titles:
  • The College Search and Naviance
  • Highly Selective Schools
  • Art Schools and Majoring in Art
  • The College Process for Special Education Students
  • Sessíon en Español
We strongly encourage all 9th-11th grade parents to attend this special College Night. Please reach out to Wren Maletsky (wmaletsky@summitps.org) if you have any questions.

Prevent Summer Slide

Did you know that all young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer? Students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. This is called "Summer Slide," and it is not the fun, water one we usually think of with summer.

While summer is still a few months away, it's important to start planning for the summer now to ensure students use that time productively and are engaged in thoughtful activities. We encourage students to participate in activities that will help them reach their individual PLP goals. For some, that may be more math, writing, and reading practice so that they can improve their grades or ACT scores. For others, it may be engaging in a passion project or developing new leadership skills. Or, it can be a combination of all of the above.

Sign up your child up for Summer of Summit to help prevent Summer Slide. Go now to the Summer of Summit Registration Form OR pick up a registration form at your school's front desk.

Dates are as follows:

  • June 23 - 26

  • July 7 - 10

  • July 14 - 17

  • July 21 - 24

The program, including a daily lunch, is free of charge to all Summit incoming and current students.

Please check the Summer of Summit Website at http://tinyurl.com/SoSParents for more info.

Sequoia Parent Education

"
Parenting the 'Always-On' Generation" with Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet and Erica Pelavin, My Digital TAT2

Wednesday, April 15, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Sequoia High School, MPR

Our kids are "digital natives" -- they have grown up in a world of online access and ever-changing media devices. Do you wonder how to teach your teen responsibility and ethics online, how to ensure they are aware of their actions, and how best to parent them in a digital age?

Come join Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, PPSC, LCSW, Erica Pelavin, LCSW, PhD, from My Digital TAT2 for an interactive workshop on "Parenting the 'Always-On' Generation." This event is recommended for anyone interested in an overview of the digital landscape and learning about thoughtful ways to navigate media with your students. You will come away with strategies that support both you and your teen.

Parents, students, faculty/staff and community members welcome!

Sequoia Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Sequoia High School Education Foundation, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.

Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be provided.

For more information, contact Charlene Margot, Founding Director, The Parent Education Series, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590. For Spanish, contact Mayela Ramirez, Parent Center Coordinator, (650) 369-1411 x 63105.
