Library Renovation Update

THANK YOU HOME DEPOT!!!

On Saturday, March 15, Home Depot arrived at our school.  Led by San Carlos Store Manager John Plungy and with guidance from designer Judy Massey of Atherton, Home Depot's all-volunteer team of Sophia Alvarez, Robert Kearns, Juan Ramirez and Perla Perez painted the walls a warm orange, removed the duct tape holding down the carpet and reattached the carpet squares, steam cleaned the dirty carpet and built new bookcases.  They have also ordered new window blinds, which should be installed next week.  "It was like living in an actual episode of the TV show Extreme Home Makeover" says Senior Erin Miller.  "Home Depot did a wonderful job!"

Meanwhile aided by a few members of the Student Senate, members of Girl Scout Troop 32609 (the Mariner's) and several additional Summit students, everything had been cleared from the room to make Home Depot's job easier.  These volunteers went to work putting a color coding organization system for the library student reading library.  By Sunday night, with help from Wren Maletsky, all the books were back on the shelves.

Erin, who is leading the refurbishment of the reading library as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project has already brought in over 350 "gently used" books with 80 additional books scheduled to be added next week including fantasy, science fiction and even a few manga books. She is still looking for ACT Test Prep books, Rick Rioradan books, Young Adult books written in Spanish and is trying to complete some book series.  Erin has created a list of "wish list" books which can be found here: http://bit.ly/1NuQ1KZ.

Woodside Parent Education

"The Mask You Live In," Documentary film from The Representation Project

Introduction by Steve Smith, PhD, Palo Alto University

Thursday, April 2, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Woodside High School, Performing Arts Center (PAC)

The Mask You Live In, a new documentary film premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, asks the important question: Is American masculinity harming our boys, young men and society at large? Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives.

"We must challenge definitions of masculinity, model the change we want to see, then seek it in mentors and teachers who will help our boys stay true to themselves. The Mask You Live In is not just a film - it's a movement. This is just the beginning. We're all coming together in a beautiful way, and the time is now. Our boys don't need to suffer, and they don't need to live in pain."

- Jennifer Siebel Newsom Writer, Director, and Producer of "The Mask You Live In" and CEO of The Representation Project

Tickets are free, but advance registration is requested. Parents, high school students, faculty/staff and community members welcome!

Woodside Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the WHS PTSA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.

"
Parenting the 'Always-On' Generation" with Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet and Erica Pelavin, My Digital TAT2

Wednesday, April 15, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Sequoia High School, MPR

Our kids are "digital natives" -- they have grown up in a world of online access and ever-changing media devices. Do you wonder how to teach your teen responsibility and ethics online, how to ensure they are aware of their actions, and how best to parent them in a digital age?

Come join Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, PPSC, LCSW, Erica Pelavin, LCSW, PhD, from My Digital TAT2 for an interactive workshop on "Parenting the 'Always-On' Generation." This event is recommended for anyone interested in an overview of the digital landscape and learning about thoughtful ways to navigate media with your students. You will come away with strategies that support both you and your teen.

Parents, students, faculty/staff and community members welcome!

Sequoia Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Sequoia High School Education Foundation, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.
