Director's Message

Dear Husky Families,
Thank you to the families that provided delicious snacks for our 10th grade CAHSEE exam. We are grateful for your support and kindness. Testing season will continue through May so we will be in touch with other volunteer opportunities.
New Charter Elementary School Coming to Redwood City!
We are excited to share that KIPP, a fellow charter management organization committed to getting underserved students to and through college, is opening a Kindergarten-8th grade school in Redwood City this August! If you are a current Summit family with a student in elementary school, or have family and friends who are looking for a high-performing Kindergarten - 8th grade option, we encourage you to consider KIPP Excelencia Community Prep!
KIPP is a network of public, tuition-free charter schools focused on getting under-served students to and through college. At KIPP Bay Area Schools, 96% of our students graduate from high school and 84% matriculate into college. Currently, we serve 95% students of color and 77% are eligible for free and reduced lunch among our 10 schools in the Bay Area.
The KIPP elementary school in Redwood City will be starting with Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st, and 4th grades for the 2015-2016 school year. We are still accepting applications for all four of these grade levels! KIPP Excelencia will be co-located at Kennedy Middle School, 2521 Goodwin Ave in Redwood City. The enrollment flyer and application are attached.
If you are interested in applying, please fill out the application complete one online at https://kippbayarea.schoolmint.net/signin. If you fill out the paper application, please submit it to the Fair Oaks Community Center, 2600 Middlefield Rd. Once you have submitted your application, we will contact you with an offer of admission and next steps to get your son/daughter enrolled in our school.

Annual Auction and Casino - May 2 @ Twin Pines/Belmont
Don't forget to send in your RSVP! It costs $50.00 per person to attend the auction on May 2, and enjoy all of the festivities; however, if you RSVP before March 22, the ticket is only $40.
We noticed that the invitation had the wrong address for the auction venue - please note that the address is 30 Twin Pines Lane, in Belmont.
The day of the event will require some volunteers. The set up and clean up events are excellent opportunities for students to earn community hours - so why not ask them to sign up? We also have needs during the event itself - for all positions, check out the following form. http://bit.ly/18sWfeP

College Case Study

College Case Studies Night
Thursday, March 26, 7pm @ Everest
College Case Studies night is a unique opportunity for all families to engage in the college admissions review process by acting as an admissions committee and examining mock applications. Admissions officers from top universities will facilitate the experience to help families better understand the college admissions process. The exercise will point out the intricacies of the process and the importance of assembling a strong application. Families will gain insight and understanding as to what is valued in the application. RACC concludes the Case Study with a mini college fair. We are excited for an authentic college learning experience! This is an excellent opportunity for our junior and sophomore families to get a preview and an inside look at the admissions process.

Athletics

Attention Parents of Summit Prep Athletes - Has your student fulfilled their commitment to helping with concessions? Each athlete must work 2 events per year per sport. If you're not sure, please contact our Athletic Director, Candace Naylor, at summitprepathletics@gmail.com to find out.
Each student's participation represents from $75 to $100 per time worked. This allows us to have an athletic program at Summit. Students who have not met their commitment have been invited to a MANDATORY Concessions Commitment Meeting on Monday, March 23 at 12:30 pm in the CoRo room. Non participation in concessions or a no show on Monday may impact their athletic participation next year.
Please remind your student to attend this meeting if they have been invited. Have them bring their calendar so they can schedule their concession times.
Baseball - Congratulations for the Husky wins against Saint Lawrence Academy on Monday, 3/16 and Thursday, 3/19.
Come cheer on our team at the beautiful Pacific Shores field. Home games start at 4:30 pm.
- March 24, 31
- April 6,16, 28

"The Mask You Live In," Documentary film from The Representation Project
Introduction by Steve Smith, PhD, Palo Alto University
Thursday, April 2, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Woodside High School, Performing Arts Center (PAC)
The Mask You Live In, a new documentary film premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, asks the important question: Is American masculinity harming our boys, young men and society at large? Compared to girls, research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications (for ADD/ADHD), fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives.
"We must challenge definitions of masculinity, model the change we want to see, then seek it in mentors and teachers who will help our boys stay true to themselves. The Mask You Live In is not just a film - it's a movement. This is just the beginning. We're all coming together in a beautiful way, and the time is now. Our boys don't need to suffer, and they don't need to live in pain."
- Jennifer Siebel Newsom Writer, Director, and Producer of "The Mask You Live In" and CEO of The Representation Project
Tickets are free, but advance registration is requested. Parents, high school students, faculty/staff and community members welcome!
Woodside Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the WHS PTSA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.

M-A Parent Education Mini-Series: 2015

"Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania" with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author
Monday, April 6, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no."
That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members.
Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.
For more information, contact Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590.
