Director's Message

Dear Husky Families,
We are excited to welcome our students back on Monday and begin the home stretch of the school year! We hope all families are using the PLP tool at home to help students stay on track to successfully finish the year on June 11th.
Congratulations to 9th Grader Nicole Tin!
Nicole Tin has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President's Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Summit Prep nominated Nicole Tin for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service. Congratulations Nicole! We are so proud of you!
Shout Out To Emma Dubridge, Oscar Morales, and Saksham Tikekar!
We are so excited to share this blog post on the Summit Prep Nearpod internship! Click on this link to see the great work that Emma, Oscar, and Saksham created for middle schools. We are proud to see our students fulfill our college and career ready mission in their expeditionary learning experiences. Go Huskies!
We Want Your Feedback! Parent Focus Groups on March 18th and March 19th
Join other Summit Prep parents and Summit's Director of Family Engagement in an annual focus group. The focus group will cover topics on student, parent, and prospective family experiences as well as include feedback on Summit Prep's LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan). The LCAP is a part of California's K-12 education funding process that guides school decisions. The focus group will provide you an opportunity to give feedback and input on the school that wasn't captured in the parent survey.
If you would like to participate, please fill out this form with your availability.
2015-2016 Calendar Now Available
Summit Prep's 2015-2016 school calendar is now available on our website at this link here.
Summit Public Schools Applying to Open New Middle School in Redwood City
Each year, both of our Redwood City high schools (Summit Prep and Everest) have significantly more applications than we have spaces available for students. In addition, many of our families have been asking for a Summit middle school option in Redwood City for years. Based on this overwhelming demand, we are excited to share that we are applying to open a middle school in Redwood City for fall 2016. If approved, the new school would open with 6th grade and grow to serve 6th-8th grade. To open a new school, we need the active support of our parents and community! If you are interested in helping us with the charter petition and recruitment for the new school, please email Kristen McCaw, Director of Growth & Policy (kmccaw@summitps.org) or call (650) 395-7165.
Emergency Practice Drill this Friday
We will be conducting a practice emergency drill this Friday afternoon to once again practice our protocol.
Thank you and here's to a great week!

Summit Prep Libraries Project

Library Renewal
Volunteers Needed March 13 and 15
Student, parent and faculty volunteers are needed as the Summit Library gets a major facelift. Volunteers are needed the afternoon and evening of Friday, March 13, starting right after school. We need to box up and move out the books and furniture in the library. That afternoon, with the help of Girl Scout Troop 32609, the books will be organized by genre and color coded so it is much easier to find books in the future. For anyone still helping at 6pm, dinner will be served! No school volunteers are needed on Saturday, March 14. That day volunteers from the Home Depot will paint the library, put in new bookcases and steam clean the carpet. Hurrah for Home Depot! On Sunday, March 15, at 4pm, Summit volunteers are again needed to move the books back into the library and re-shelve them. There are about 1,000 books to move. At 6pm pizza and drinks will be served. If you have questions about volunteering for this project, contact Erin Miller at emiller.sp@summitps.org or 650-207-7848. If you are willing to help with meals that we will be serving to volunteers over the weekend, contact Kathy Kennedy at kennedyiti@aol.com or 650-291-9678. Books Needed for the Summit Prep Library You probably didn't realize that there are nearly 400 new books in the Summit Library. But there are still a few we would love to have. GENTLY USED ACT BOOKS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED. There are also about 40 books on the "wish list" that are mostly needed to fill out book series. If you are cleaning out your book shelves, take a minute to see the list and sign up, go up at http://bit.ly/1ATr42s. Bring the books to the front desk at Summit Prep and we'll take care of shelving them. If you have questions, contact Erin at emiller.sp@summitps.org.

Teenage Risky Behaviors
"Distracted Driving Parent Workshop" with Impact Teen Drivers (California Highway Patrol)
Thursday, March 12, 10 am - 12:00 noon
Sequoia Union High School District Office
Birch Room
480 James Avenue, Redwood City
Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teens drivers are at the highest risk: the crash rate (per mile driven) for 16 years olds is four times that of adults. In this workshop, you will learn about:
- Strategies to keep your teens safe on the road
- Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
- The Rules of the Road for teen driversHow YOU can stop the #1 killer of teens in America--reckless and distracted driving
Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers. For more information, contact Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590, or Karen Li, MD, Wellness Coordinator at kli@seq.org. Parent Education Series events are free and open to SUHSD parents, faculty/staff and community members. The Parent Education Mini-Series is sponsored by the Sequoia Healthcare District and the Sequoia Union High School District.

"Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be: An Antidote to the College Admission Mania" with Frank Bruni, New York Times Columnist and Bestselling Author
Monday, April 6, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a stressful and occasionally devastating rite of passage, preceded by test prep, tutors, all kinds of rankings and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say "yes" and which say "no."
That belief is wrong. And in Where You Go Is Not Who You'll Be, Bruni explains why, giving students and their parents a new outlook on this brutal, deeply flawed competition and a path out of the anxiety that it provokes.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff and community members.
Simultaneous Spanish translation will be available.
For more information, contact Charlene Margot, M.A., The Parent Education Series, Founding Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590.
