Director's Message

Dear Husky Families:
Thank you so much for your support during an eventful week. We are proud of our entire school community - students, parents, and faculty - for the courage, respect, and responsibility that was exhibited last Monday. Most importantly, we are glad it turned out to be a false alarm and an opportunity to practice our emergency protocol. Summit's core values of maintaining a physically and emotionally safe environment for all, and ensuring that every student is personally known, allowed us to swiftly implement the protocol and maintain a calm environment. We designed the protocol to protect the physical and emotional safety of everyone in our building, and our students and families were able to trust us while facing the unknown because of the personal relationships we have developed over time. As a result, first responders were able to implement their protocol without interruption. Our values and beliefs were the foundation of our success, even during a time of uncertainty, and we have received high praise from the Redwood City Police Department for our students and protocol. We would like to acknowledge our SPS colleagues who immediately came to our site to help manage the communication and evacuation from the outside, while our students and faculty were still in the building. We are so grateful for everyone's collaboration and support.
A Big Shout Out to Our Winter Sports Players!
Please join us in celebrating our winter sports teams for an awesome season! We would like to highlight our Girls and Boys Soccer teams, and Girls and Boys Basketball teams for modeling our core characteristics, values, and beliefs during the playoff season. They played with courage and integrity during difficult games and we are proud to say that our Summit Huskies - players and fans - maintained their composure and fought to be thoughtful and respectful in the face of adversity. We are honored to stand by and cheer on our teams and we commend them for their perseverance and maturity. Thank you for a fun and successful winter sports season.

Spring is upon us and we are eager to have all students successfully complete the school year and prepare for a relaxing and restful summer. To best support students at home, we should prioritize the following:
We expect all students to finish strong by attending school daily, productively working during school hours to receive appropriate support, meeting deadlines and staying ahead of the line, and exhibiting the proper learning behaviors. Together, we can ensure that all students complete the school year one step closer to meeting our mission. Go Huskies!

Summer of Summit 2015 has something for everyone! This personalized program provides a fun and engaging experience offering academic rigor while promoting personal growth.
The program, including a daily lunch, is free of charge to all Summit incoming and current students.
Based on our Summer of Summit survey in December, we have created a diversity of opportunities for our students. Students will have the option to:

Classes will be held Tuesday- Friday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. each week at Summit Prep (890 Broadway Street, Redwood City). Improving Summit Resources
Senior Erin Miller has tackled the project of (1) creating a college prep library and (2) creating a much better reading library at our school, but she could use your help in the following ways.
DONATE TEST PREP BOOKS
The college prep library is mostly finished but ACT prep books have been very popular. "As soon as they come into the library, they are checked out of the honor library," explains Erin "and that's a good thing. We just need more of them." So Seniors, if you purchased an ACT prep book, and are now done with it, please donate it so younger students can use it. You can just drop it off at the front desk.
DONATE REGULAR LIBRARY BOOKS
The Reading Library faced several big challenges. There were a lot of books that students didn't want to read and it was pretty disorganized. In the past several months, Erin has added more than 300 books focusing on science fiction, fantasy but other things students might find interesting. This week alone books were added on subjects ranging from Fetches to CSI style Forensics. Erin is trying to complete some series (she needs The Hunger Games. Book 3, The Mockingjay, for example) and next week will publish a list of what is still needed. Just as importantly, lots of books that were in the bookcases are ending up in the appropriate teacher classrooms. Some were duplicates and will be used to start a library at another Summit school.
HELP WITH LIBRARY ROOM RENOVATION
The library room was pretty uninviting too. Saturday and Sunday March 14 and 15) volunteers from the Home Depot will arrive to paint, put in new flooring and build bookcases. At the same time, Girl Scouts and Summit volunteers will be putting in a book organization system. It will be awesome! We need help moving the books and furniture out of the room on Friday after school and back in late on Sunday evening, March 15. We need food for the volunteers and there will be a signup list. Summit students and families that can help create the organization system are welcome to volunteer. If you can type, glue or categorize books, you are needed on Saturday March 14.

Athletics

Baseball - The first games begin March 3. The entire game schedule is posted on our athletics website (http://t.maxpreps.com/1yT68wL).
Winter Athletes Uniform Return - Winter athletes, please launder and return you uniforms to your team parent asap. Or you can drop off yours bagged and labeled with your name at the front desk. Missing or damaged uniforms will result in a $100 charge per the policy you signed as a participant. Thanks!
THANK YOU! A big THANK YOU to all those student-athletes who have worked the concessions. These funds make up to half of the $15,000 athletic budget, raised annually. Without each athlete participating there would not be an athletic program. Your participation is greatly appreciated!
Stanford Concessions - All athlete assignments to the Stanford Concession are managed by Barb Pedersen (bap2@pge.com). You will be receiving your assigned game by email from Barb. Summit Athletes will be emailed to work an event in the upcoming months. As Boys Basketball dates or other events become available, those who need to fulfill their 2 shift obligation for this year will be emailed. Please reply asap to Barb's email notices. Thanks.

AP Test Sign-Up Form: Due by March 12
All 12th grade students are required to take at least 2 AP Exams. All 11th grade students are required to take the AP English Language test. Students should reach out to mentors for order forms.
College Updates for Seniors
The Class of 2015 is continuing to hear back with college acceptances. Currently, 66% of the senior class has been accepted into at least one four year college or university!!
A representative from the Opportunity Fund came to speak with Summit families on February 12. The Opportunity Fund is a college savings program for high school seniors with demonstrated financial need. In the program, for every dollar students save, the student can earn two dollars in matched funds. To learn more about the organization, please visit the website at http://www.opportunityfund.org/. At the last SPOT meeting we reviewed the remainder of the Summit calendar and parent engagement opportunities. We are more than half way through the year and we could not have made it without you. 9th Grade Lottery (March 7, 2015) - This is the day that the lottery takes place and admitted students announced. Teacher Appreciation Week - National week to celebrate faculty is May 4-8. Each grade will be responsible for organizing lunch for one day:
Testing Days in May - The 11th and 12th graders will be taking various AP tests. Whether you are in those grades or not, please help support our Juniors and Seniors by providing snacks and fresh fruit on test days. Save The Date! Summit Prep's Annual Fundraising Event is May 2!
Please help support our efforts to raise $175,000 for our College Readiness Program, college trips, Expeditions program, Sports program, and classroom materials!

- Where: Twin Pines Center in Belmont
- Time: 7-11pm

Auction Our annual Summit Auction and Casino is scheduled for May 2, 2015. This year, the event will be at the Twin Pines Recreation Center on Ralston Avenue in Belmont. Like last year, we will have casino games, so come and have some fun! There are many ways to participate, here are just a few: 1) Donate an item to be auctioned off. Gift certificates to local restaurants, performances (ballet, symphony), and other services - all make excellent items. We are all patrons of local businesses, so why not ask them to donate to our school for a great cause? Donations should all be directed to Stacy Guthmann: stacyguthmann@yahoo.com. 2) Attend the event. What other evening do you get to mingle with parents from other grades and all the faculty of Summit? Great way to get to know the community and make new friends. Look for the invitation to the event early March.
3) Volunteer on the day/night of the auction. Many hands make light work and the set up needs to occur in a flash of time, requiring thus a large group for a short amount of time. "Distracted Driving Parent Workshop" with Impact Teen Drivers (California Highway Patrol)

Automobile collisions are the leading cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of these crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. Teens drivers are at the highest risk: the crash rate (per mile driven) for 16 years olds is four times that of adults. In this workshop, you will learn about:

- Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) laws
