Executive Director's Message

Dear Husky Families,
It was so wonderful to welcome our students back to school and begin 2015 as a Summit community. We are so proud of how much progress our students have made towards their year-long goals, and we hope that your family is regularly using the PLP Tool to engage your student in meaningful reflection and goal-setting. With the PLP Tool, all students are empowered to use real-time data and grow every single day. We encourage all parents to use the PLP Tool to know where your student is right now, and how they can take steps towards improvement. One of Summit's Own Makes Forbes 30 Under 30 List! Congratulations to Sam Strasser (PLP Engineer), who was named one of Forbes 30 Under 30: Education! Sam's dedication to Summit's students and mission is evident to everyone who meets him, and we are so excited that he has been recognized for his amazing work on the PLP tool. Way to go, Sam!
Connecting With Our School Model - Grit, Perseverance, and Persistence We are excited to share a link to a Ted Talk given by Angela Duckworth, a renowned psychologist whose research on grit and perseverance informs the design of Summit's "Habits of Success." We are thrilled to collaborate with leading experts in this field to coach our students on how to respond productively to setbacks and be persistent when faced with challenges.
Let's Show Our Core Characteristic of Responsibility! We are currently running a lunch deficit of over $4,000 and we need your support in clearing this financial obstacle. We are asking all families who owe lunch dues to submit payment as soon as possible. Students who are not eligible for free or reduced lunch and hold a lunch balance can lose the opportunity to pick up school lunch moving forward, so please submit payment by this Wednesday. Winter Formal Pictures! We would like to thank Jeff Bartee for taking wonderful pictures of our December Winter Formal. If you would like to browse the photo gallery, please use this link. Updated Events Calendar (Version #8) We have made some date changes to please go to our website here for the updated events calendar (SPOT meeting has been cancelled for this week). Thank you and we hope you have a great week! Penelope Pak McMillen and Wren Larson Maletsky

"The Well-Balanced Student," with Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success
Tuesday, February 3, 2015, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)
Please join us for an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, nationally and internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the well-being, engagement, and integrity of our students.
Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. We'll offer parents research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments.
In this presentation, you will learn:
- How students today are coping-or not-with the academic pressure they face
- Ways you can reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement or engagement in school
- Strategies to increase resilience, creativity, and well-being for your child
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is also made possible by a grant from the La Entrada PTA.
SUHSD parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome!
Spanish interpretation will be available.
