Executive Director's Message

PAWPRINT Dear Summit Prep Families

We had a wonderful time celebrating our community during the annual camping trip in Boulder Creek and we could not have done it without your help! Thank you so much to all of the parents who put this entire camping trip together!  We are grateful for all of our drivers, on-site chaperones and kitchen staff, financial and in-kind donors, and logistics organizers who made this trip so successful!  This truly was a whole-school community effort and on behalf of the teaching faculty, thank you for investing your time and resources into our students!

SPOT meeting and Back To School Night Part 2 this Thursday!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone again this Thursday for our monthly SPOT meeting at 6 p.m., and Back To School Night Part 2 at 7 p.m.  We hope you will join us to learn about parent engagement opportunities, the PLP tool, a day in the life of a Summit student, and to meet your grade-level teachers!

picturedayPicture Day is Friday!

All students will be taking school photos this Friday.  Students will receive orders forms during Community Time on Monday.

Here's to a wonderful week ahead!

Another Camping Trip is Over

Thank you to the Summit community that came together to make the camping trip a reality, this past week. From the driving, food preparations, donations of supplies, and the many behind the scenes activities that took place to carry out this annual tradition, a big THANKS. A special recognition to Mitzi McGilvray (parent of Class of 2016) who stepped into a major planning role for this event. We hope we can count on all of you again next year.

There is still time to contribute to the camping trip. If you have not sent in the suggested $20 for the camping trip, you can still do this. You may drop off at the front desk in an envelope entitled "Camping Trip Donation" with your child's name on it.

PAWPRINT Meet the Coaches

Jenice Wilson -  Head Girls Varsity Volleyball Coach
Coach Jenice's first love was soccer. She played for six years while in elementary school. After moving in middle school to Palo Alto she gave volleyball a try and never looked back. She's been coaching since she was in high school and throughout her college career. She lead her team as co-captain at Foothill College before she transferred on a volleyball scholarship to a NCAA Division II school, Lincoln Memorial University in Herrogate, Tennessee. This is her first year coaching for Summit Prep and is looking forward to a winning year in the Northern division of the PSAL.

Ethan Edwards - Head Coach, Varsity Cross Country, Boys and Girls
Coach Edwards grew up in San Diego and developed a passion for fitness and running during middle and high school. He ran Track and Cross Country for La Costa Canyon High School for two years. During his undergraduate studies he competed in sprint and Olympic triathlons and was an assistant cross country coach to Steve Edwards at Pacific Ridge High School in Carlsbad California for two years. He will be teaching Pre-Calculus at Summit Prep in Redwood City for his second year of teaching.  This will be his first year coaching for Summit during this inaugural year for cross country.

Lawrence Berroya - Assistant Coach, Varsity Cross Country, Girls and Boys
Coach Berroya is in his first year at Summit Prep as the AP Government teacher and Assistant Cross Country Coach. His first loves growing up were baseball and basketball, which he has both played and coached. However, he fell in love with distance running as an adult when he finished his first marathon in 2011. He has completed two marathons, 13 half marathons, numerous 5k and 10k races, as well as being part of a team that finished the 200 mile Ragnar Relay.  He is looking forward to a great running season and the establishment of this new athletic program at Summit Prep.

PAWPRINT  M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

"The Perseverance Process: Strategies for Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence"
Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President and CEO of Search Institute

Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Recent and emerging research suggests that persistence or "perseverance" can improve students' academic motivation and increase performance. In fact, the evidence suggests that noncognitive character traits like grit may be more predictive of future academic achievement than IQ or SAT scores. Fortunately, a growing body of research demonstrates that when schools, youth programs, and families act intentionally to influence motivation and persistence, it is possible to significantly increase both.
Join us for an informative, engaging presentation with Dr. Kent Pekel, CEO and President of Search Institute. To bridge the gap between research and practice, Search has created a new resource called "the Perseverance Process" to turn the research on motivation and persistence into a set of explicit and actionable strategies.
