Executive Director's Message
|
Dear Summit Prep Parents, It was really wonderful to see our students engage in our opening project and identify creative ways to enhance our facility. We are looking forward to reviewing their ideas and hopefully implementing them! Husky Pride for our Alumnus! Our community also had a special visit from one of our former students! Mishka Kornai, a graduate from the class of 2008, is an established filmmaker in Los Angeles. He recently directed a music video for international R&B star John Legend, and is currently directing a documentary called "Growth," which explores the relationships between children and parents of all ages. Our students were able to witness a professional film crew in action as Mishka filmed shots of our school day from a bird's eye perspective -- "giving the audience a rare opportunity to overlook the moments and relationships that define our lives." As a Summit student, Mishka's passion for film was supported through our Expeditions (formerly Intersession) program and we are so proud of his accomplishments! Camping Trip Needs Your Support! We are looking forward to taking our students to Boulder Creek this week for our annual camping trip! We would like to enlist your help with the following: * $20 per student is the suggested donation for the camping trip budget so we'd love your help! Checks can be made out to Summit Prep. * If you would like to donate food for the camping trip, please sign-up through this link < http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0948aaaf2aa2fd0-2014> * Driver meeting this Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. - submit paperwork! If you are driving, please attend our informational meeting and submit all paperwork. Here's to a great week! Penelope and Wren ( Return to Top)

Camping Trip Update
Thank you to all parents who attended this past week's Back to School event and have signed up for some vital positions for our annual camping trip. Here are the following ways we still need assistance:
Driver Meeting on Tuesday, September 2
Thanks to the great response on Back to School night, we have achieved all drivers necessary to take all students to/from campsite. Now, we need you to confirm/provide paperwork necessary as well as attend the Camping Trip Driver Meeting on September 2, at 7 p.m. at Summit. Please confirm we have your information correctly by checking the google document below.
Additional Help
We have a sign up list with numerous requests for help and donations. We are still looking for donations of some food items, which offsets the total cost of this trip. Please take a look and see how you can contribute to this great experience for your children. We need donations of time, money and food for the trip:
http://bit.ly/1tJmMth. Below are a few key responsibilities we need to fill ASAP.
1) One more person to meet US Foods at the campground and inventory the food when it is delivered (Wednesday, September 3) - please respond directly to Sandra Cheung - sandracheung@yahoo.com. Donate $20 per student towards our camping trip
The camping trip is a great opportunity for our students and the suggested financial contribution of $20 per student builds the entire budget for this event. Every donation helps us ensure a great learning experience for our students so we appreciate your financial support! Follow the link for instructions to make the donation: http://bit.ly/spscamping. Then, once you're all set up, you can log into your online payment account to make the donation: https://system.netsuite.com/pages/login.jsp.-- You may also donate $20 by cash or check. Just turn this in at the front desk in a separate envelope with your student's first and last name.

Meet the Coaches
Jenice Wilson - Head Girls Varsity Volleyball Coach Coach Jenice's first love was soccer. She played for six years while in elementary school. After moving in middle school to Palo Alto she gave volleyball a try and never looked back. She's been coaching since she was in high school and throughout her college career. She lead her team as co-captain at Foothill College before she transferred on a volleyball scholarship to a NCAA Division II school, Lincoln Memorial University in Herrogate, Tennessee. This is her first year coaching for Summit Prep and is looking forward to a winning year in the Northern division of the PSAL.
Ethan Edwards - Head Coach, Varsity Cross Country, Boys and Girls Coach Edwards grew up in San Diego and developed a passion for fitness and running during middle and high school. He ran Track and Cross Country for La Costa Canyon High School for two years. During his undergraduate studies he competed in sprint and Olympic triathlons and was an assistant cross country coach to Steve Edwards at Pacific Ridge High School in Carlsbad California for two years. He will be teaching Pre-Calculus at Summit Prep in Redwood City for his second year of teaching. This will be his first year coaching for Summit during this inaugural year for cross country.
Lawrence Berroya - Assistant Coach, Varsity Cross Country, Girls and Boys Coach Berroya is in his first year at Summit Prep as the AP Government teacher and Assistant Cross Country Coach. He has completed two marathons, 13 half marathons, numerous 5k and 10k races, as well as being part of a team that finished the 200 mile Ragnar Relay. M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES
"The Perseverance Process: Strategies for Strengthening Academic Motivation and Persistence" Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President and CEO of Search Institute Wednesday, September 17, 2014, 7:00-9:00 p.m. M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC) Recent and emerging research suggests that persistence or "perseverance" can improve students' academic motivation and increase performance. In fact, the evidence suggests that noncognitive character traits like grit may be more predictive of future academic achievement than IQ or SAT scores. Fortunately, a growing body of research demonstrates that when schools, youth programs, and families act intentionally to influence motivation and persistence, it is possible to significantly increase both. Join us for an informative, engaging presentation with Dr. Kent Pekel, CEO and President of Search Institute. To bridge the gap between research and practice, Search has created a new resource called "the Perseverance Process" to turn the research on motivation and persistence into a set of explicit and actionable strategies. M-A Parent Education Series events are free of charge, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District. This event is made possible by generous funding from the Esther Ting Foundation. For more information, contact Charlene Margot, Parent Education Series Program Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590. SUHSD parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome! Spanish interpretation will be available.
