Executive Director's Message

PAWPRINT Greetings Husky Families,

Thank you to all the teachers and parents who made the 9th and 10th grade study trips a great success!  We are so grateful for your investment in our mission to help all students prepare for college, career, and life.  These trips provide our students with opportunities to explore colleges and cities in search of the "right fit", and this long-standing tradition also provides our parents with opportunities to bond with our diverse group of students.  From Monterey to Los Angeles, our Summit Huskies stomped the quads of some of California's best colleges, and also found time to feel the Pacific Ocean on their toes and see the Spaceship Endeavor with their own eyes!  Thank you teachers for planning such an amazing experience and thank you parents for helping us execute our vision!

Reminder: Donation Matching Opportunity!
We wanted to send a friendly reminder that one of our Husky families has generously offered to double all monetary donations we receive from now until April 30th, up to $10,000!  We are so grateful for their support, and we feel blessed to have a family embrace our mission to provide a rigorous, college-prep academic program for all of our students.  Thank you for supporting our teachers and students, and joining in our quest to provide equitable access to a high-quality education for all students, regardless of their previous preparation or background.  If you have yet to give this year, now is the time to double your donation!  If you have already given this year, please consider giving again to double your donation!  You may mail a check to the school or use our donate link here: http://summitps.org/involved/donate.

"Summer of Summit"
We are so excited to share that Summit Public Schools will be offering a summer academic opportunity called "Summer of Summit"!  For five weeks this summer, we will be opening up our campuses and inviting our students to continue to develop their cognitive skills, to work on their content mastery, and to make progress on their habits of success.

Summer of Summit is open to all students, and taking advantage of this opportunity to make progress on cognitive skills and content will set students up for success in the coming year.

Each day will begin with students working in small groups practicing their cognitive skills.  At the end of their work time, students will meet with their site teachers to reflect on the work they have done, the growth they have made, and how they should be focusing their energy moving forward.

In the coming weeks, your child's mentor will reach out to you to discuss setting up a specific plan for success, which will include identifying how many of the available weeks your child should attend.  Summer of Summit happens Tuesday - Friday in the following weeks:

    Week 1:  June 24 - June 27
    Week 2:  July 8 - July 11
    Week 3:  July 15 - July 18
    Week 4:  July 22 - July 25
    Week 5:  July 29 - August 1

We are delighted to provide this opportunity for our students.  Your child's mentor will be in touch soon.

Sincerely,

Penelope, Patti, and John

Student Fundraising

PAWPRINT Help Students Raise Funds.  We have two ambitious young women who participate in a program called Ignite. This program exposes young women to the world of politics and leadership, and they're taking a trip this summer to Washington D.C., where they will meet with congresswomen and policymakers. Two of our Summit students underwent a selective process and have been chosen to be among 25 young women nationwide to participate. They are getting creative about how to pay the trip fee of $600, and would so appreciate your support to help get them to the White House! (Thank you for helping them to raise this money by April 10!)  Please click on the links below to support them and learn more about them and the program Ignite.

Thursday, May 1, 2014, 7 - 9 p.m.
 M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Do you know who's in your teen's village? Who can your son or daughter turn to for help, advice, or assistance in a time of need? The more you think through your teen's support network, the better off they'll be when they hit a bump along the way. No parent can do it alone.

Join us for an exceptional evening with Kent Pekel, Ed.D., President and CEO of the Search Institute of Minneapolis, MN. The presentation will include a keynote address from Dr. Pekel, a short video featuring the stories of M-A students impacted by an adult mentor, and a moderated Q & A with Lisa Medoff, Ph.D., Stanford University.

Dr. Pekel is an educator and administrator who has worked at the school, district, state, federal, and university levels. He holds a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Yale University, a Master's in Education from Harvard, and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Minnesota. For information on The Developmental Assets® framework created by Search Institute, see this website: http://www.search-institute.org/research/developmental-assets.
