Executive Director's Message
|
Dear Husky Families:
A Celebration of Literacy
This week, our entire Summit community celebrated our culture of literacy with an analysis of the film adaptation of Divergent. We are so thrilled about the success of our "Summit Reads!" program, and we want to thank Ms. Rice, Ms. Maletsky, and Ms. MacGillivray for putting together such a formative experience. Reading is the most important college and career ready skill, and we want to continue to find ways to engage our students in a learning culture where reading is celebrated. Please stay tuned for more student reflections from this experience!
Model Student Leadership, Self-Direction, and Challenge-Seeking
We would like to shout out 9th grader Jacyn Schmidt, who has recruited and led a team of 9th and 10th graders for a submission to the High School of the Future design competition! This competition asks students to design a high school that embraces the advent of technologies, building philosophies, and cultures to prepare youth for the increasingly competitive global world. Students use the design and planning process to enhance learning, conserve resources, be environmentally responsible, and engage the surrounding community. This amazing team of Summit Huskies self-directed their own learning with amazing student leadership, and collaborated with our mission, vision, values and beliefs as the foundation of their work. We are so proud of Jacyn Schmidt, Liam Isaacs, Sage Kurnie, Jeremy Ezrin, Anna Kubicka, Tom Chu, and Hunter Kaufman. We also want to thank our SPS colleague Linda Stevenin and Bill Gould from Artik Art and Architecture for their mentorship. Our students have been invited to present their project next Friday morning, March 28th, at the Council for Educational Facilities Planners International Regional Conference in Berkeley, where they will also announce the winners of the competition. Below is a video of their submission. Good luck Huskies!

Why focus projects on cognitive skills?
When we send our graduates out into their communities, their universities, and eventually their careers, it will matter very little if they can memorize formulas or regurgitate facts. Instead, our students' ability to synthesize multiple sources of information, to make coherent arguments, to conduct extensive research into questions of their own creation, and to place facts into context will be much more essential to their success. Cognitive skills are how we access and process knowledge. Universities care more about students' cognitive abilities than their content knowledge, and with the Common Core assessments on their way, our nation is, for the first time in many years, prioritizing cognitive skills above content acquisition. Everest students will be ready for a future of increasingly rigorous tests and higher university standards because they can ask the right questions, communicate with confidence, and solve complex problems.
How are Summit's projects aligned with College Ready Skills?
Our whole organization has partnered with the Stanford Center for Assessment Learning and Equity (SCALE), a group that has been a nationwide thought leader in designing assessments of Common Core standards, to make sure that our project rubrics truly align with the skills students need to be college ready. The assessment experts at SCALE are working hand-in-hand with Summit Public Schools teachers and leaders to develop the best tools for recording, assessing, and encouraging students' growth on cognitive skill domains such as writing, reading, inquiry, and research. SCALE is also the organization that is building the rubric for the Common Core standardized assessments (Smarter Balanced), which our 11th graders will be field testing this year, so we are so grateful for this partnership that SPS has fostered in direct service to the development of our teachers and students.
Thank you for your support in our efforts to reform public education and truly prepare your students for success in college, career, and life.

The annual grade level study trips are around the corner! In April, we will have 9th, 10th, and 11th grade go on their respective study trips. In May, the 12th grade is heading up to Tahoe. Here is what is going on at each grade level:
