Executive Director's Message
|
Dear Husky Families -
We want to thank all of the students and parent volunteers who helped make our Winter Formal so much fun! From baking treats to mopping bathroom floors, our parents and students came together as a community to celebrate and dance the night away! A big shout out to our Social Committee -- Alexis Straiten, Valeria Sandoval, Jackie Penafort, and Adrianna Corrales -- for their awesome student leadership!
We need your help!
As Summit Prep receives significantly less funding per student, we depend on our families to contribute about 10% of the school's budget each school year. We must raise at least $100,000 more this year to balance our budget and avoid significant cuts to next year's program. This will impact our staffing model, sports program, Expeditions course offerings, study trips, and curriculum materials. Please consider donating as quickly as possible, and as generously as possible. The stark reality is that over 50% of our families cannot afford our target level donation ($1,000), so we are reaching out to the remaining families to help us balance our budget. Please help us raise the remaining $100,000 so that we can continue to provide an excellent program next year and beyond. Please feel free to mail or drop off a check at school, or use our convenient online system here: http://summitps.org/involved/donate.
School-Wide Field Trip In the fall, our entire Summit community read the book Divergent as a part of our Summit Reads! program. This was a great community bonding experience for all of us, as the entire school was deeply engaged in a strong culture of literacy.
Students and faculty members could not put the book down, and this shared experience led to a renewed understanding of how reading, an essential skill for learning, can be fun! To extend our critical thinking and learning, we will be embarking on a school-wide field trip to see the film Divergent on Friday, March 21. Students will return to school in the afternoon to engage in an analysis of the film adaptation, as well as the social/cultural commentary provided by the text.
We are excited to provide this opportunity to our students, and continue building a culture of literacy here at Summit.
Teaching and Learning at Summit Prep
Tip #1: What happens after a student takes an assessment? |
After a student finishes a content assessment, they'll see this:
|
|
|
Clicking the link will lead the student to their results screen:
|
|
|
There is a lot of information here, but let's point out the most important things.
First, in the upper left is the overall score. Our screenshot here is for a Content Assessment. These will always be out of a possible 10 points. Remember, an 80% is passing for most classes. For AP classes, passing is 70%.
Another important section to notice is the Question Group Scores below the overall score. This section shows you which type of question the student got wrong, and the sections are the same as the sections on the Playlist:
|
|
|
This helps students decide what topics they need to review in case they didn't pass and need to retake the assessment. If your student is saying that s/he needs help deciding how to study for a retake, this flowchart outlines many of the strategies Huskies have used to be successful.

Thank you! Penelope, Patti, and John

Teacher and Classroom Supplies Wishlist gets easier!
We are extremely grateful for the continued support the parent community has given to the multiple requests for supplies for classes and/or general use. We have created an Amazon wishlist under "Summit Prep Parent Group" (search for this name under Amazon Wishlists). Ordering from Amazon is not required, but it gives you the quantity that is requested, and a nice visual of what the specific item looks like. Ordering from Amazon, from the wishlist will get the item shipped directly to school. Check it out: http://amzn.to/1qnI935.
Of course, shopping at Amazon is even better if you start off from our parent website: http://summitspot.org/ - and clicking on the Amazon logo.

Study Trips Update
Study trips are a pivotal aspect of the college prep experience. It is both an opportunity for the student to envision life at college, as well as an excellent bonding experience for the students, faculty, and parents at the particular grade level. The planning for the study trips is going on strong but we will still need your help. Here is a recap of where we are at this week:
- 10th Grade Study Trip. Dates: April 2 thru April 4. This grade level is looking for a couple of additional drivers. Please contact Stacy Guthmann: stacyguthmann@yahoo.com.
- 11th Grade Study Trip. Dates: April 9 thru April 11. This grade level is looking for a couple of stand-by drivers.
For questions, please contact your grade level ambasssador or send email to: spotsummit@gmail.com.
