Greetings Husky Families!
With second semester in full swing, we wanted to take a moment to give you an update on the state of our school finances.
The Community High School Foundation parent volunteers have been working tirelessly to raise the $250,000 needed to balance our budget, and sustain our school for our children. This is a collaborative effort that requires 100% participation from our entire community to embody our core characteristic of "responsibility" and "leave no Husky behind." Currently, we have less than 25% of our community participating in our fundraising efforts, and we would like to encourage everyone to share this responsibility in encouraging others to contribute to our school. Any amount, big or small, will support our students and teachers in meeting our mission to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life.
We would also like to enlist your help in collecting the $5,000 in overdue lunch expenses we have accrued this year. We would like to kindly remind all families to promptly pay lunch balances to minimize the impact this has on our school. The majority of our budget is spent on our students, so any imbalance directly affects our ability to serve our students and meet our mission.
We are grateful for everyone who has contributed to our school through volunteering time, to providing faculty snacks, to fulfilling supply wish lists. Thank you for embodying our core values and upholding the collaborative spirit of our school!
The Summit Next Generation School Model: How Playlists and Content Assessments Prepare Students for College and Career
Summit's Next Generation School Model equips our students with the content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and habits of success needed for the standardized tests that are required for college acceptance. The content portion of the SAT, SAT II, ACT and AP exams require students to memorize large amounts of content knowledge and successfully navigate the tricks of multiple-choice questions. They also require persistence and discipline, two habits needed to independently spend time reading, memorizing, and completing practice questions over, and over, and over again. This same persistence and discipline is a non-negotiable of the 21st century workplace, as successful employees are those who can independently learn new things, and fix their own mistakes.
Summit's content playlists and multiple-choice content assessments are a systematic way for our students to learn, practice, and exercise everything that is necessary for college and career success.
- Students learn content independently (just like they will have to learn in college by independently reading a 1000-page reader or by independently listening to a lecture)
- Students practice multiple-choice test-taking strategies needed for standardized test preparation (required for college entry)
- Summit's content assessments give students immediate, real-time feedback on what they know and what they don't know. The ability to retake assessments allows them to fail safely and learn how to respond to failure -- with persistence. This automatically requires students to persist by trying again, re-learning, studying differently, and succeeding independently -- a habit needed for success in college and career.
- Students build discipline through personal experiences with success and failure. These experiences illuminate how much time a student needs to spend studying, what study strategies work best for them, and what they need to be a successful, independent students and professionals. Students are empowered by this increased self-awareness because they have more information to make smarter choices around what they need to succeed.
Friday "Personalized Learning Time" is a built-in structure to support the practice of all of these skills and habits. We mentor our students around their development, and coach them to take the opportunity to meet college and career requirements.
Our unrelenting pursuit of our mission to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life drives the decisions we make to enhance our model year after year. We have seen tremendous growth in just six months, and we are so proud to see our students exhibiting the skills and habits needed for success in our innovative, 21st economy. As always, thank you for supporting our mission, vision, values and beliefs.
Sincerely, Penelope, Patti and John

Woodside Parent Education Series"Why Willpower Matters" with Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., Stanford University
Thursday, February 27, 2013, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
Woodside High School MUR
Is willpower in the mind or in the body? What motivates people to change? How much control over our thoughts and feelings do we really have, and what are the healthiest ways to regulate them?
Health psychologist and Stanford University lecturer Dr. Kelly McGonigal understands willpower, and her work helps families improve habits, cure procrastination, find focus, and manage stress. She shares cutting-edge research into the neurodevelopment of adolescents, along with valuable strategies or "willpower boosts" to give parents tools to conquer common self-discipline challenges and establish an effective model for improving self-control in children. Dr. McGonigal's lectures inspire parents and students in the U.S. and around the globe!
Kelly McGonigal is the author of The Neuroscience of Change; The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It; and Yoga for Pain Relief. McGonigal received a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University.
Woodside Parent Education Series events are free and open to parents, students, and community members in the SUHSD. Sponsored by the Woodside PTSA and the Sequoia Healthcare District. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be offered.
