Message from the Executive Director, Penelope Pak

PAWPRINT Greetings Husky Families!

Happy February!   We are excited to share that we have extended the deadline for enrolling in our online payment system until February 7th!  This will be truly the last time we will have open enrollment for the rest of the school year, so please help us streamline the study trip payment and our lunch payment process by enrolling in our easy program!  This will save us hours of time by eliminating the check/cash processing and deposit logistics.  Enrollment can be completed online at the following link:  http://bit.ly/spsparentsignup

Stanford University Design Professor and Engineering Students Coming This Week to Speak with Summit Prep Students!
This Tuesday during lunch (12:45-1:25 p.m.), we will welcome Mr. Guido Kovalskys, a professor at the Stanford University's Institute of Design design school, to come speak to our students who are interested in innovative design and STEM careers! Mr. Kovalskys is a 10-time Ironman Competition finisher who has founded four successful companies in the last 15 years.  These companies range from education, to healthcare, to entertainment and his most recent venture is Nearpod, a company focused on using mobile devices in education.  Two current engineering students from Stanford University will also join Mr. Mr. Kovalskys so please encourage your students to attend.  More information about Mr. Kovalskys can be found here: http://dschool.stanford.edu/bio/guido-kovalskys/

AP Environmental Science Class Visiting Hidden Villa This Week!
The 12th grade AP Environmental Science students are visiting Hidden Villa Farm in Los Altos on February 4-5!  This field trip is a wonderful opportunity to build upon our studies of water pollution, earth systems, and agriculture while students engage in first-hand experience with the environment.  Students will conduct invertebrate studies in a local creek, analyze the benefits and drawbacks of different types of farming, and explore sustainable land use practices!

Common Core Standards and Summit's Next Generation School Model
Our mission to prepare all students for success in a 4-year university and to be thoughtful, contributing members of society has always been the foundation of our school model.  From our curriculum to the daily schedule, we are committed to preparing our students for success in college, career, and life.  The new Common Core Standards for students complements our school mission because they require students to master skills that are "essential for college and career readiness in a twenty-first-century, globally competitive society."  These standards focus on "reading, writing, speaking, and listening that are the foundation for any creative and purposeful expression in language."  Summit's curriculum has always used engaging, project-based learning to build the critical thinking skills identified in the Common Core Standards, and our class time (also called "Project Time") is primarily spent reading, writing, speaking and listening.  Our amazing teachers coach our students on mastering these skills during class through conferencing, modeling, and targeted instruction, using teacher time for the most high-value activities.  We encourage you to ask your students about the projects they are currently working on to hear how they are engaging in real-world activities to fulfill our college and career ready promise.  If you would like the complete description of The Common Core Standards, you may find them here at this link: http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/finalelaccssstandards.pdf

We hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Sincerely,
Penelope, Patti, and John

Parent and Student Resources

PAWPRINT M-A PARENT EDUCATION SERIES - Award-winning Documentary Film: "In 500 Words or Less"
Thursday, February 6, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC)

Going to college is a rite of passage for many American high school students, but the process can be overwhelming: college fairs, SATs, tours, applications. And then there's the personal essay. How does a seventeen year old define herself to total strangers when she's only beginning to discover who she really is? And how can he or she be expected to do it in an essay of 500 words or less?

Just a few tickets remain for this event. "In 500 Words or Less" is highly recommended by NACAC, the National Association for College Admission Counseling, and featured at a recent national conference.

Ticket Registration: https://in500wordsorless2014ma.eventbrite.com/.

Registration is FREE and Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the M-A PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District.  A great family event! Parents, students, and SUHSD community members welcome.

For more information, please contact Charlene Margot, Parent Education Series Program Director, at cmargot@csmconsulting.net or (650) 868-0590.
