Message from the Executive Director, Penelope Pak

Dear Husky Families:

We hope everyone had a wonderful break with family and friends.  We are incredibly grateful for the support that you have provided us throughout this school year, and we would like to take this time to welcome our community back for the last stretch of 2013 with some special "shout-outs":

Thank you to our parents Marilyn Ezrin and Stacy Guthmann, and our students Alexis Straiten, Adrianna Corrales, Laurel Naylor, Cheyenne Seneca, Lili Mourier, Alexander Guthmann, Jeremy Ezrin, JC Angulo, and Russell Wong, for participating in our phone bank evening to help raise $250,000 for our basic operating costs.  Thank you to the 20 families who have donated over $60,000 to our annual fundraising campaign, and to the families who have promised financial support.

Thank you to our students for working hard each day to prepare for success in college, career, and life.  Your persistence continues to amaze us, and we feel incredibly lucky to be a part of your life journey.

Thank you to our parent community for volunteering endless hours to support our students, families, and faculty members.  Sandra Cheung -- thank you for taking the lead on SPOT, and organizing our parent volunteer opportunities!  Martha Perez -- thank you for volunteering four hours of your personal time to clean our kitchen! And to all of the parents who have provided delicious treats for our faculty meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays -- thank you for celebrating our teachers!  They work very hard everyday to personally support all 400 of our students, and it is such a reward to begin our faculty meetings with the snacks you have prepared.  Thank you for your compassion and kindness.

And finally, thank you to all of our fabulous teachers for supporting our students and colleagues organization-wide during a tremendous time of need.  A few days before our holiday break, Justin Semana, a Summit Public School: Rainier junior, unexpectedly passed away.  This tragic event has affected our entire SPS community, and our thoughts and prayers have been with the students, families, and colleagues of our San Jose schools.  In support of our former colleagues who lead our sister schools -- David Richards, Lia Pinelli, and Nick Kim -- and our teachers and students in San Jose, the Summit Prep faculty spent the last Friday before break at Rainier and Tahoma.  Below are a few words of thanks from our San Jose partners:

From Tori Pennings (Former Summit Prep student teacher and current faculty at SPS: Rainier):

"It was such a relief to have the teachers from Summit Prep here.  We really needed them."

From Leo Carrillo (Former Summit Prep student teacher and current faculty at SPS: Rainier)

"Thank you very much for helping and supporting our students, teachers, and admin.  You helped us get through the rough day.  It was great to see our SPS community come together to support and be there for each other."

We are so grateful for our entire SPS family -- together we are a group of students, parents, and educators that believe in the power of community, and the importance of building personal relationships across all of our schools.  We will miss Justin dearly, and we will always remember him as a model student and community member.  To celebrate Justin, we have created this tribute (bit.ly/1cU6TYi) to capture his time with us.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and community.

Thank you.

  • Complete a transfer application (download here or on our website)

    • Application must include an official transcript.

    • If final grades are not available, a current print-out of student grades, or a quarter progress report will be sufficient.

  • Submit the application by the deadline:  Friday, December 13, 3 p.m.

SPOT

PAWPRINT Grade Level Ambassadors.  As a reminder, this year, the SPOT is led by a small team of Grade Level Ambassadors (see below) - through whom key communications and volunteer designations will be accomplished.

PAWPRINT Key Volunteer Positions Needed - for questions or to fill either of these positions, drop us an email at: spotsummit@gmail.com.
  • eScrip Administrator Assistant. eScrip is a program by which you can earn money for Summit by shopping. We are looking for an assistant to the administrator who can roll out the program at school, and who can do lightweight administration. The time commitment is not expected to exceed 3 hours a month - and counts towards your 30 annual hour volunteering requirements.
  • Husky T-Shirts and Hoodies Administration. We have now moved to selling our Husky Wear at the front desk, but we are looking for a parent volunteer who can track sales, manage inventory (place new orders), and manage the money we make. The sale of these items is one of the several vehicles the school has to raise funds.

Community High School Foundation

PAWPRINT Fundraising at Summit Prep

Last week, ten Summit students joined the Executive Director, Penelope Pak, and Summit parents Marilyn Ezrin and Stacy Guthmann to call the families at Summit to ask for donations to the annual direct drive.  The students were driven to help out to show their appreciation for the education that they receive at Summit.  Our goal this year is to raise $250,000 for the operation of the school.  We currently only have 20% of our families participating in the Direct Drive and we would be grateful if every family can make a contribution, to the best of their ability, to the Direct Drive.  Please show that you value your child's education as much as they do.

Any questions about how your funds will benefit the school, students, and faculty can be addressed to: spotsummit@gmail.com.

PAWPRINT Shop and Earn Cash for Summit!

Just in time for holiday shopping, we have enabled our Summit parent website to earn cash for our school as you (and your friend and family) shop at Amazon. To do this, you must initiate from our website: http://www.summitspot.org/ - and click on the Amazon button. The rest is easy!
