Message from the Executive Director, Penelope Pak

PAWPRINT Greetings Husky Families!

Thank you so much for the classroom supply donations (see article)!  We are very grateful for your generosity and support!  Our Community High School Foundation has launched the annual fundraising campaign to raise $250,000 to support our basic operating costs (facilities, teachers, curriculum, etc.) so we would like to thank our early donors as well!

Dance this Friday, November 8th from 8-11 p.m. at Summit Prep dance

Our wonderful student social committee is putting together our first dance of the year so we would like to see all of our community members in attendance!  Tickets are on sale during lunch for $20.  Guest passes are due this Thursday, and must include the signature/approval of the guest's school principal.  Tickets at the door will be $25.

Supporting our Reading Initiative

books-apple-icon2.jpgThe ability to critically read and analyze text is a "habit of success" that prepares students for the rigors of higher education, and empowers them to be thoughtful career professionals, and contributing members of society.  Reading is one of the dominant cognitive skills used to learn all throughout life, and it is a skill that is improved through continuous and disciplined practice.  The theory of action for how all of our students will graduate with college and career ready reading skills is to deeply engage in reading, with guided practice from teachers and peers, during the vast majority of the school year.  This constant practice allows students to develop disciplined habits with reading, and this cognitive skill "muscle" strengthens with quick, immediate feedback.  Our regular academic program supports the development and practice of this critical skill, and each morning, our students engage in reading high-interest fiction on a technical platform that provides immediate feedback on their reading ability.

Our school day begins at 8:15 a.m. with keys_clock.jpgthis targeted reading support, so it is imperative that all students arrive to school on time to continuously practice this skill.  We would greatly appreciate your efforts to help our students arrive to school at 8:00 a.m., to properly prepare for this targeted reading practice starting at 8:15 a.m.  Thank you.

PAWPRINT UC-CSUappnightUC and CSU "internal deadline," Completion Night, and final deadline

UC and CSU applications are due in November!

Our "internal deadline" is Friday, November 8. We would like all seniors to submit their UC and CSU applications by this date for two reasons. First, we will be on Expeditions the 2 weeks following November 8, and then on Thanksgiving Break after that, so the first week in November is our last week to really work together on these applications.

Second, for those qualifying for the EOP programs at UC and CSU campuses, submitting the application early gives you time to complete your accompanying EOP applications by November 30. (You have to submit the first application in order to start the second.)

Our "UC and CSU Application Completion Night" is on Thursday, November 14, from 3 - 8 p.m. We will gather at Summit Prep that afternoon and evening to help students and families submit UC and CSU applications if they have not already done so.

Lastly, applications for most UC and CSU campuses close on November 30, and once they are closed, they will not reopen. This is a very firm deadline.

If you have any questions, please contact your student's mentor. Thanks!

PAWPRINT Stanford University OutreachThe Stanford's Junior class is conducting an outreach program for interested high school juniors and seniors.  The event will consist of a college application and essay workshop with current Stanford juniors that will be led by The Phoenix Scholars and the Hume Writing Center. There will be a short introduction from both organizations followed by a two-hour workshop where the students will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the current Stanford juniors. For the second part of the event that will run at the same time, high school juniors will be able to take an hour-long tour led by current Stanford tour guides followed by a panel discussion and a meet and greet.

See this flyer for information. Stanford will be able to accommodate approximately 50 students from each class on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please sign up early as the links expire Tuesday, November 5 at 11:59 p.m. If the event is filled before then, students will be placed on a wait list. A confirmation and complete detailed schedule will be emailed out on Wednesday, November 6 to the participating students.
