Sitting at a Coffee Shop
Leandra Sexton

Sitting at a coffee shop, letters and envelopes scattered around the table, I started writing little notes of encouragement to my friends and family. I try to do it once every couple of weeks, but life gets busy (and Day Camp happens). I really like writing letters. Not so much for the act itself, but because I know the joy that comes from getting a handwritten note in the mail. The current message series is spot on. My eyes start to water every time I open a letter. It could simply read "I'm praying for you" or "I'm thinking of you" or "Hi" but to me it says "I love you." While the New Testament is the part of the Bible that is mostly letters, this is how I read the Old Testament. My friends know that when they receive one of these notes it will be filled with encouragement, funny stories, prayers, and a mini sermon rooted in the Old Testament. I am very predicable in that way.

Humans of 1stPres

 Melissa Peace

"I've been going to 1stPres for just over a year now. Some things were happening in our life, and God just moved in and made Himself present and known. I had gone to a few churches when I was younger. My sister and brother-in-law made me go with them a few times, but a lot of it wasn't a good experience. The church I had visited was very strict, and I was a rebellious type, so I pushed back against everything-I kind of still do. As a rebellious type, I'm pretty stubborn and have never been a very good listener. That's why when God wants to do something in my life, He makes it happen because I usually don't want to listen. He will shut doors and make decisions for me. For instance, one day my daughter came up to me and said that she had talked to God, and I was like, 'Hmm, oh did you now?' and it wasn't long after that when we were invited to 1stPres for the first time. The combination of her telling me she had talked with God, along with things that were going on with my sobriety and separation, it was completely obvious to me that it was God's timing and intention for me to get involved with the church. During my first visit, I immediately felt like I was at home. I still do every time I come here, and that's why I keep coming back. That feeling of belonging just reaffirms God's faithfulness to me. It's such a blessing for me to be in a place where people love me just for who I am, and that I have the freedom to love them back. For years, I judged people for going to church, and I judged God too, but I'm finding out that God isn't who I once thought He was. And that's what is so cool about the Love1st thing for me: it means that I get to love everybody, even people that don't go to church, or people who have no religion, or people who live on the street, because that's what God did for me. To be able to turn around and give that same love to others without judgment is friggin' awesome."

What is Rest?
Amy Cheng

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Lake Chelan with two dear friends, one of which has a family-owned condo on the shores of the lake. The three-hour drive across the state of Washington was sunny, filled with excitement and joy. My heart soared as I looked forward to what the next couple days had in store for me.
As I took some time the next evening to sit on the private dock near the condo, watching the clouds slowly change color and the last rays of light disappear behind the hills, I was struck with a sudden thought: what is rest? How are we experiencing it in a consistent, lively way? Are we placing ourselves in a position to receive rest, or are we simply surviving? Although this weekend was set apart by God as a period of stillness, I still found myself mentally and emotionally overwhelmed with catching up with these old friends, as well as being preoccupied with next week's agenda at work. I think this tense dichotomy is representative of how many of us embody our days, in which our physical location acts merely as a catchall for the various worries and anxieties harbored in our hearts. As relational as my work in Coeur d'Alene is as opposed to checking off boxes, I am just as exhausted at the end of a day.

Thank You!

Note: This is a letter the Downtown Workers Team received from the Pattersons in response to the quilt that you filled with 76 envelopes containing gifts, and messages of love and encouragement for them.

Thank you and your congregation for the incredibly generous
gift..  We love the blanket the kids made and are working on getting a
backing put on it so it will last.  As beneficial as the monetary donations
were , what touched my heart and lifted my spirit were the notes people
included.  Some were truly heaven sent and inspired. That was truly a
blessing.  I try to stay positive  but as my health declines it can hard to
do.  We had a large deductible that was still owed from a hospital bill  a
portion of the gift is going towards that . Most of the remainder will be
used for some upcoming bills we weren't sure how we would cover..
I am sorry it took so long to write but I had several really bad days and
could not focus or sit at a keyboard.  I am having a better day today.
Tell your pastor that I understand that many people will make a donation
to a good cause but use money that would normally go into tithes.  I
wouldn't be surprised if the operational expenses of the church were
effected by the kind donations we received.

Thank you again,
your brother and sister in Christ,
Tim and Debbie Patterson

The Glory Be Buzz

Glory Be Video

Our valiant Whitworth Fellow, Chris MacMurray, has been hanging out at Glory Be working on a promotional video for them. It took dozens of games of hide-and-go-seek-tag for Chris to play in order to gather this footage. We greatly appreciate his sacrificial work for Glory Be, and for this church.
Here is the short version of the promo. Stay tuned for the full length video coming out very soon!

Slange Y Va
Thursday, August 4

You are invited to come journey with us as we explore ancient monastic traditions intended to help us create our own unique life rhythms of rest and grace!

This two-hour participatory experience is rooted in deep, spiritual practices that teach us to inhabit time rather than consume it. In our modern culture where busyness controls our schedules and clutters our minds, maybe there's something we can learn from these time-honored monastic traditions about how to rest well and find joy in the present moment.

This event consists of:
  • A free dinner, eaten in the style of Benedictine monks.
    • Taizé, a French monastic-styled worship which is largely meditative and participatory.
      • A short teaching on monastic living and tools to create your own rhythm of life.
You are encouraged to invite friends to this free event.

Thursday, August 4 at 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM, at the church.

Children are welcome to come and will be given their own version of this monastic experience by the Children's Ministry team.

Elementary ARKade - Parable Productions
Incoming 2nd- to 6th-graders will hear and act out the weekly parable, then hear a modern day parable that illustrates the same important spiritual lesson. Each week, the children can get a Know-A-Parable and Bible verse for home to prepare for the upcoming Sunday lesson. These children will conclude the hour in the ARKade game room for fun & games, animal crackers, and lemonade.

Summer S.P.L.A.S.H. Preschool Pond - Once Upon a Parable
3-year-olds to incoming 1st-graders will experience songs, prayers, and lessons that focus on the weekly parable. They will end the hour with snack, a coloring page, and free-play in the Preschool Pond classroom.
