Blog of the Week

A Small Price
Amy Cheng

I hear it in the rustle of the leaves from the light breeze. I see it in the slow tease of the waves lapping at the shore. I feel it in the depths of my being, slight whispers of peace, restlessness, and sweet, sweet nostalgia. Summer has arrived.
For as long as I can remember, summer has carried the significance of three months of forced, communal truancy from school. It also means watching the shadows cast longer shapes every night, rejoicing in the tickle of freedom that seems to wash over the entire community, and an endless barrage of mosquito bites. A pastime I will never tire of is the simple, serene act of sunset-chasing. There is a beauty in catching the golden rays just right, somewhere between the 6:30 rush hour from work and the local prime time showing on TV. As a person of deep emotions, I have found that feelings of loneliness often accompany me when I encounter this single moment which (should) shower me with overwhelming joy. Why?

Humans of 1stPres

Happy Tuesday, good people of 1stPres! This is one of your valiant Whitworth fellow's, Chris MacMurray.

Today, I would like to officially share one of my many ongoing summer projects with you. This particular project is entitled "Humans of 1stPres." Throughout the summer, my goal is to meet, get to know, and share as many of your stories as I possibly can. The goal of this project is to share fractions of the testimonies that comprise the congregation of 1stPres, with the intent of utilizing each testimony to reveal the heart and essence of the church. Each post will contain a picture and the name(s) of the featured congregants, and a sample of our discussion that captures a prominent piece of the puzzle that is their story. My hope is that "Humans of 1stPres" will clearly illuminate the undeniable beauty of the body of this church.

 Susie Freligh

For those of you who don't know Susie, she is the director of Glory Be Learning Center here at 1stPres. If you haven't met Susie, that might be because she isn't a member of the 1stPres congregation. Yet regardless, Susie has had, and is continuing to have a significant impact in the Coeur d'Alene community through her hands-on and Christ-centered education philosophy, which naturally compliments and blends itself with the #LOVE1st mission of 1stPres.

"Working in childcare has always been my passion. I've been involved in childcare for over 25 years. It's the only kind of work I've done since my junior year of high school. I honestly can't imagine myself doing anything else.
When I went to school, I took a class that required us to teach in a Kindergarten class in order to see if we would want to end up teaching in elementary school, and I immediately knew that I wanted to teach preschool over elementary education. God gives us different talents; he gives elementary teachers a specific talent and preschool teachers a specific talent, and God definitely gave me a talent for preschool education. Faith is something I've always strived to incorporate into the childcare system I work in. I'm not sure that I could work in a program that wasn't Christian-based. I think it gives the teacher that nurturing piece that they need, and I think it's really important for kids to learn the basics of Christianity and to have it as an element integrated into their learning experience, but even more importantly I want kids to know how much God loves them."

The Downtown Report

 My Favorite Downtown Coffee Shop
Amy Cheng

When one sets their sights upon the city of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, one may see the beautiful shores of the lake, the world's only Floating Green at the golf course, or the grandeur of the well-known Coeur d'Alene Resort. However, I am convinced that it is what lies beyond the façade of this tourist town that truly embodies the heart of the community. Having only been settled here for three weeks now, my daily "field trips" out amidst the streets of downtown speak to the various needs of local businesses, specifically those in the restaurant and hospitality industries.

Do you consider yourself a coffee connoisseur? Currently, downtown Coeur d'Alene is home to five different coffee shops, all which possess their own, unique personalities. One of my favorites is the family-friendly, business-friendly Bakery by the Lake at Parkside, located on the corner of 7th St and Front Ave. You can find the owner, Andy Pigott, tending to various tasks in the back as well as cheerily making espresso drinks at the bar up front. The environment of the Bakery is open, airy, and welcoming. Many of their baked goods are homemade, adding to the feel of old-fashioned quaintness. The staff that work tirelessly are mostly composed of young generationals, whether taking a break from college or simply being home for summer vacation. Every time I walk up to stand in the (usually long) line for my order, I am able to place a familiar name and face. Breanna, Mandy, Sean, and Diana are just a few to add to the list.

Although I could rave on and on about how much Bakery by the Lake at Parkside makes me feel right at home, I could also do the same with the four other coffee locations in downtown Coeur d'Alene. As I continue to walk the streets, greet numerous baristas with smiles, attempt to memorize names and snippets of life stories, and enjoy my time in these businesses, I am growing in my knowledge of the very basic, human needs that are exposed. For now, stay tuned for my second favorite place.

Groups & Gatherings

Widows & Widowers - WW2

According to Pastor Craig's sermon series on "Living Well, and Dying Well," I am adding "Going On Well!"  If you have become a "single" through death, and are desiring to become part of a social group with the same challenges as you, consider joining Widows and Widowers Too (WWII).  This is a brand-new program getting started to provide a social outlet for members and non-members who are tired of being a fifth-wheel in a foursome!  You will be getting in on the ground floor of this program and can have some say in how it is going to work!  Give Karen Huber a call (208-667-6525), e-mail (khube828@aol.com) and tell her you're interested!  We have lots of ideas and want to hear yours!!!!!

Summer Science Exploratory Camp

This summer, one-week science camps will be offered to students going into third, fourth, fifth, or sixth grades. At a private home near the Silver Lake Mall, young scientists will explore a variety of earth, life, and physical science concepts through dialogue and hands-on experimentation.
Bill Burch (see posting below) is a graduate of the University of Idaho, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with a science emphasis. His education includes the entire battery of Project Wild courses sponsored by the Idaho Fish and Game department. He is also a former participant in NASA's Educator Workshop. He currently teaches fourth grade in North Idaho.
The camp will run from 9:00 am to 11:30 am Monday through Friday. Cost will be $80.00 per scientist, and each session will be limited to twelve participants.
This is a private endeavor not affiliated with any school or institution.
These one-week camps are offered during the weeks of July 11th and July 25th, 2016. To reserve your spot, call Bill Burch at (208) 755-5925.

Congratulations to Bill Burch: Teacher of the month!
