Maybe it was just something about being out west - but the first time I visited California I loved it right away. That was the year after I had graduated from high school. I had worked all summer in London painting houses, then in the fall, when all my friends were heading to college, I hitch-hiked through Europe - France, Italy, Germany, Greece - before winding up broke, alone, and depressed in Tunisia. I finagled a plane ticket back to London, where I worked for the winter washing dishes and prepping food in a Tony Roma's restaurant. As soon as I had enough money I bought an air pass on TWA that gave me eight flights in the US for about a hundred bucks. A screaming deal. My plan was to fly around, see my friends, and stay with them in their college dorms.

Glory Be Spring Flower Basket Fundraiser
  
Purchase your Glory Be Fundraiser Flower Baskets! Signup is in the church office or contact Susie Freligh at Glory Be Learning Center. Pre-orders are due by April 27th. Pick-up starts April 28th at 11am in Glory Be area. Flower choice is first come first pick. Thank you for your support of the children and staff at Glory Be!
Baskets are $35.00  each. 
 
No DYG This Sunday
  
Due to only having one service we will not have DYG downstairs. See you all at the potluck! 

College Scholarships
  
If you are a student entering college this Fall or continuing your college education, our church offers potential scholarships. Beginning, returning and continuing education students are invited to apply. If you are interested, scholarship applications for educational advancement are available in the church office or click on this LINK for an application. Deadline for applicants is May 1. Turn in your application please to the church office by the deadline. No applications past May 1 will be considered.  

Glory Be Is in Need of...
 
Our little friends at Glory Be Learning Center are in need of a few things:

floor lamps
and a small gliding rocking chair.

Youth Director Position  
 
First Presbyterian Church of Coeur d'Alene is currently seeking a dynamic leader with a calling, a passion and a record of success in connecting with teenagers, helping them grow in their faith, and firing their sense of mission. This person will oversee ministry to both Middle School and High School teens (grades 6-12). This part-time, paid position requires 20 hours per week including Sunday mornings. This person will need to be an entrepreneurial, relational and well-organized ministry worker expanding an emerging ministry in a growing church with a strong ministry to children. Parents' Nite Out Event - A Purple Party!
Friday, April 8
 
Kids - what's a Purple Party? You'll just have to come and find out. This Parents' Nite Out event is for families of children, infant to grade 5. There will be crafts, games and a movie for the kids - they can even invite a friend! Friday, April 8, 5pm-8pm, in the Gym. Reservations required. All Church Potluck - One Service Only!
Sunday, April 10
 
Whether you are a brand new visitor, or a life-long member, plan on attending our All Church Potluck on Sunday, April 10. It's going to be tons of fun with loads of delicious food and great fellowship. We will have one service only - at 10am. The potluck will follow in the gym. Bring a casserole, salad or dessert to share. 
 
All Ladies - Save the Date!
Saturday, May 7
 
SATURDAY, MAY 7, Noon - 2:00PM - Taco Bar Luncheon and Special Gathering at FPC in the Gym.  This will replace the previously scheduled May 17 meeting and will be our last general meeting until Sept. All ladies & guests are invited.  More information and sign-ups will follow. There will also be an April Women's Association Meeting on Tuesday, April 19 at 1:00PM in the Fireside Room.  Bethany Looyeng, of the Agape Group, will be the speaker.

Day Camp Pre-Registration  
April 2016 
 
Day Camp Pre-Registration for 1stPres families will take place during the month of April. Day Camp registration will be opened to the public on May 1, 2016. Registration is first-come, first-served. Whenever we reach capacity, registrations will be put on a wait list. The registration deadline is Wed, June 1, 2016.

Downtown Church Day Camp
Summer
 
Day Camp Dates: Mon. July 11 - Fri. July 15, 2016
Day Camp Times: 9:00am - 4:00pm (with the option of am/pm extended care)
Day Camp Ages: incoming 1st - 6th graders
 
Downtown Church Day Camp will be a Wet N' Wild week. Mornings will be spent at the church and include skits, lessons, small group activities, large group worship and singing, crafts, and games. Each afternoon, we will walk downtown and enjoy activities at different locations, like McEuen Park, Tubbs Hill, Sanders Beach, City Park, City Beach and the NIC Campus. This year's Downtown Church Day Camp theme is Wet N' Wild. The daily Bible story lessons and activities will focus on a different Wet N' Wild Bible story.

Coming this Summer... Sunday Fundays
 One Sunday a month, May - Aug. 2016
 
The Children & Family Ministry Team will be hosting a different family focused afternoon/evening event each month (May - Aug.) this summer.  These Sunday Funday events will be designed for but NOT limited to families with young children. All 1stPres members and friends of any age will be welcomed. Most events will be offered FREE, however a few will have optional or minimal costs. The following Sunday Fundays are being planned, as soon as all the events, dates, locations and costs (if any) are confirmed we will publish more details. In the meantime, we hope you will add Sunday Fundays to your summer calendar, and even consider inviting friends!
 
Sunday, May 22 - Blessing of the Bikes (afternoon; FREE with optional cost)
Sunday, June 12 - Sunday Funday Scavenger Hunt (afternoon; FREE)
Sunday, July 31 - Spokane Indians Baseball Game
(3:30 p.m. game time; minimal cost $5-$11/person)
Sunday, Aug. 28 - Sunday Funday Surprise
(afternoon/evening; might include but not limited to any combination of food, fun, fellowship,& /OR water play)
 
Camp Spalding Registration 
 
This summer, 1stPres children and youth have the opportunity to attend summer camps at Camp Spalding. Summer camp provides a chance for children and youth to get away from the daily routine, to spend a week with fun, mature, Christian role models, and to experience God and His creation in a way that is unlike any other. Thousands of young lives have been eternally changed during summer camp experiences at Camp Spalding! This year, 1stPres children and youth are encouraged to attend the following camps at Camp Spalding:
 
Juniors II       July 24 - 30    for incoming 5th and 6th graders
Jr. High II       Aug. 7 - 13     for incoming 7th and 8th graders
High School students may choose from Leadership Camp, Sr. High Camp, or Clearwater Arts Camp
 
1stPres campers will receive a discount when they register through the church.
A registration code is required to register and to receive this discount. Each registration code is church- and camper-specific and can only be used once. Registration is currently open on-line at www.campspalding.org. You must request your camper-specific registration code(s) from the church BEFORE registering your camper on-line.  To request a code and receive detailed Registration Instructions or if you have questions regarding summer camp, please contact Lou Pennebaker by phone at (208) 667 8446 or email Lou@1stpresdowntown.org  

Additional financial assistance is also available from the church for those who submit a scholarship application. Scholarship Applications are currently available at the church.
 
Volunteer Opportunities

Ecumenical Lunch April 7
Thursday, April 7

We will be hosting the Ecumenical Food Kitchen on Thursday, April 7. Sign-up sheets are available on the hallway bulletin board by the kitchen and in the Hunter Building. If you have questions, please call Bev Rasor at (208) 765-3410. All help is needed and appreciated. Please bring salads, casseroles, desserts, or help with serving our guests.

Groups & Gatherings

Women's Circles
  
The Women's Circles meet the first Tuesday of each month September through May from 1:00 - 3:00 PM.  Guests and visitors are invited to attend.  If you would like to attend or need a ride, please contact the church office (208) 667-8446.


Saturday Morning Men's Group
  
The Saturday Morning Men's Group meets every other Saturday morning at Bakery by the Lake at 7am.  They will be starting a new study with the book "The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows" by James Bryan Smith.

Knitting for Warmth
 
Please join the Knitting for Warmth knitters every Friday morning from 10:00am to 11:30am in the Conference Room. This is an open, community knitting time for anyone who would like to create a prayer shawl. Your shawl will be given as a gift of love, hope, and comfort to someone who is critically ill or in crisis. Knitting instruction will be available if this is your first project, and materials will be provided for FREE. Contact Betty Cheeley at (208) 664-2612 if you have questions, or if you know of someone who could really use the gift of a shawl at this time in their life. 
 
Basketball Dudes
 
Anyone interested in playing pick-up basketball can join us in the gym at the church Wednesday nights. We meet from 6:30pm-8pm. Call David Johnson for details (208) 651-0319.
 
Thursday Men's Group
 
The Men's Group Iron Horse lunch continues their study of C. S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity." We're covering one chapter each week, and anyone is welcome to enjoy lunch and participate in the discussion (or not). This is a great time to join us!

The Iron Horse has accommodated this group with a Thursday noon special soup added to the menu, and with scintillating and erudite conversation, how could any guy resist?  Meets Thursdays at noon at the Iron Horse on Sherman. Contact the church for info (208) 667-8446.
 
Sunday School ARKade - Children's Program
 
The Sunday School ARKade takes place on Sunday mornings during the 9:00 am and 11:00am worship services. Children 3 years and older attend the beginning of the worship service. Following the Children's Moment, 3 year olds - 5th graders are dismissed to Sunday School ARKade classes located on the 2nd floor of the Hunter Building. Parents may accompany their children to class, but are not required to do so.The Sunday School ARKade includes SPLASH!, an Early Childhood class for 3 year olds - Kindergarten; First Five, a class for 1st & 2nd graders; and Bible Learning Ports, for elementary children to play and learn as they explore the Books of the Bible; Memorize Bible Verses; and become Scripture Sleuths finding God's answers to life's questions in the Bible. Children must be picked-up and signed-out at the end of the worship service by a parent/guardian. Don't miss the boat; come aboard the S.S.ARKade, Sundays at 1stPres CDA!   
 
NOTE: This Sunday, March 27th, children (3 years - 5th grade) will participate in a special large group Sunday School Egg-perience in the Fireside Room. Following the service, children are to be picked-up and signed-out by a parent/guardian from the Fireside Room.

Open House for Perspectives on the World Christian Movement.
  
On April 11, 6:30 to 9:30pm there will be an open house for Perspectives on the World Christian Movement.  It will be at His Place Church in Post Falls,  Speaker is Mary Ho of All Nations Family.  Her Topic is "The Spontaneous Multiplication of Churches."   All are welcome to attend.

North Idaho College Music Department Presents - "Musical Roots"
  
On Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30pm in the 1stPres Sanctuary, the North Idaho College Cardinal Chorale and Chamber Singers will perform "Musical Roots." Free.
