How do we measure achievement?

As kids we measured our growth in inches and feet on the kitchen doorway, and I considered it a very great achievement to have grown more than my siblings - especially my older brother. The thought of somehow catching, and then passing him in height was a dear hope of mine and a very real fear for him - I could see it in his eyes. We both believed that being the taller one somehow made you the better person. No one ever told us this - we both just knew it. And of course we would measure ourselves in many other ways too - like in grades and sports and the arts - always wanting to be first.

As adults we seem just as obsessed with the idea of being first - of being measurably ahead of all others. We want to become head of our company - or have the nicest car on the block - or be the best looking on the beach - or just be first vicariously, by being a fan of the team that wins the Super Bowl - or the Sweet 16.

Even when I'm just shopping at Fred Myers my need to be first can kick in. I want to pick the fastest check-out line. I scope out the various lanes to evaluate which is the right pick. I look at the length of the line, the amount of groceries in each person's basket, and how alert the check-out person looks. Then I make my selection. As soon as I get in line I glance over at the lane next to me to see who's at the back of that line. Then the race is on. I want to be done with my purchase before that person is done with theirs. That's how I know if I chose wisely. Of course if someone in front of me wants to chit-chat or dig through their purse for coupons - at the last minute - then I roll my eyes and fume. Don't they know this is a race and they are holding me up? I have to hold myself back from bumping them with my cart to let them know to hurry up.

But don't think I'm just petty minded - I want to achieve bigger things too. Some great achievement that I can fold up and put in a book, and rest on for the rest of my life. Something I can say, "Whew... well if I never do anything else in my life at least I've done that." Something like Olympic Gold, or the Medal of Honor - something untarnishable. Something that will unequivocally put me measurably in front of everyone else.

Am I being silly?

"And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us." Heb 12:1

See, even the Bible is full of scriptures that tell us that life is a race. So what's so wrong about me shoving my way forward at the check-out line? Won't My Father be proud of me for knocking over the dawdling old ladies and claiming my place - first in line?

I think the key to the answer to that question lies here, "...the race God has set before us."

If I stop to think about it, when I'm in line at Fred Myer, what is the race that God has set before me? Is it to get to the front of the line first? Or is it that He wants me to race towards patience? I know it's probably the latter thing and not what I think it should be - but it's hard to accept. How do you even measure patience? Think about it - if you can't measure it than how do you know who comes in first? And if you can't come in first than there's no way to win an Olympic Gold for it. You can't have the 50 yard dash of patience.

I strain to see life the way God sees it - but sometimes it just seems impossible to do. I want to be so secure with my position in Christ, that I stop worrying about things like being first. And I want to stop looking at others and just focus on doing my best - for God. But then, on the other hand, I want to tell Him, "God, don't you see that I am far too busy getting ahead to learn patience right now? Can't you just put me in front of all of these for a while - then I can relax and learn whatever you want me to." I want to be totally devoted to Christ, with my life poured out in service to Him - but I also want to win.

How do you measure achievement? I know the ruler in my head needs some adjusting. I grew up on the standard system - but God's gone all metric on me. I need to abandon my old system and just live in God's - but it's scary. What if I end up always being at the end of the line? Won't people laugh at me? I guess that might be the answer. To surround myself with people who see learning patience as a valuable thing - people who will clap for me when I let myself come in last. That's why I like being around all of you. You value the things of God. You're all a peculiar kind of people. I guess it's safe to become metric with you.

God Bless,
Steve

All are welcome, and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

EASTER FLOWERS

"Full of beauty, fragrance and life that breaks forth from a lifeless bulb or seed, spring flowers are a wonderful reminder and symbol of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who broke forth from the grave on the first Easter, conquering death so that all who believe in Him might also have new life."

In celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Easter Sunday worshippers are invited to bring fresh flowers of any color or size, cut from the garden or purchased at the store. These flowers will be placed on a wire wrapped cross during the Easter morning worship services. The flowered cross is a beautiful symbol and reminder of the transformation and new life of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
