Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. Luke 6:27-28

We are not promised an easy life. Which is strange to me because as the children of a loving and kind God you'd think we'd have it made - all cupcakes and room service, all the time. But that's not the way it is. I've heard many theories why. In fact some say the pain they feel, or see others experience, is proof that there is no God at all. I get that. But I think mostly those people know in their heart that there really is a God - they're just mad at him.

Some say the pain we feel in this life is the pain caused by sin. Adam fell and we're all just trying to work our way back to Eden. Maybe. I don't know. That many people live a life of suffering - this is true. That most people, at some point in their life, experience more pain than they can imagine bearing- that too is true. It's a dark world most of the time, and it seems to be getting darker all of the time.

I don't know why God allows it. But I do know there is a reason. And a good one. One day I'll know what that is - just not right now. In the mean time I have a choice to make. I can choose to act out of love or out of pain. Acting out of pain - in anger for instance - is certainly often justified. But God isn't interested in our justified actions - he is interested in love. Especially choosing to love when you are hurting.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor 13:13

When you've been hurt it is easy to stop the flow of love through your heart. Anger is a mighty cork - and anger is a natural byproduct of pain. Someone deliberately steps on your toes and our first reaction is to step on theirs. It's sad that the people we love the most are often the ones stepping on our toes - but I guess they are able to because we love them and let them close enough to do it. Love requires us to be vulnerable. And we don't like that. Step on my toes and I'll stick a cork in my heart for you.

I've lost out on a lot because of my self-righteous refusal to love those who hurt me. So many times God's had to put a corkscrew to my heart to wrestle out the stubborn unforgiveness inside of me. He's not done yet. I want love, but I'm learning that the real gift is being able to give it. And that means being ok with people hurting me - forgiving them. Not that I want people to hurt me - I wish they wouldn't. (And more than wishing it's my responsibility to explain to them the things they do that are hurtful - otherwise I'm just playing at being a victim.)

The whole point is that the pain is not the point. It's about what you do next. How do I react? Will I forgive? Will I communicate my feelings? Will I let myself be vulnerable again so love can flow freely out of my heart? Or will I ascend the throne of self-righteous anger. Being on the throne is a mighty feeling of power. I confess that I enjoy it. I like it up there. Sometimes I've even stuck my toes out where I know they will get stepped on just so I can have an excuse to act like a king. (Well - more like tyrant really.) Sometimes, even after the first blush of anger has passed I will make myself stay mad at a person - refusing to forgive them. When I feel any love trying to leak out of my heart for them I hurry and jam the cork back down. This can go on for years. It lets me feel in control. It's a heady gig - but a lonely one.

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15

There is a music that plays - a song we all hear - that draws us into the Great Dance. You cannot dance this dance alone. But the steps seem tricky and complex - you are constantly getting your toes stepped on and stepping on the toes of others. The rhythm and rhyme goes like this: be hurt, forgive, be hurt, forgive, be hurt... and the melody is: love, love, love. It's a beautiful song and well worth the effort to learn to dance to it. Don't be stubborn like me and stand in the corner and refuse to dance just because you have gotten hurt. And if you're trying to dance from a distance, grab a box of Band-Aids and step in close.

God Bless,
Steve

BOLIVIA TEAM REQUEST

The Bolivia Mission team is still in awe of the amazing financial support shown at our auction several weeks ago. It absolutely exceeded our highest expectations!  Unfortunately, we are unable to let our donors know who purchased their donated auction items. If you were one of the recipients of an item that had a specific donor to contact could you please connect with that person(s) within the next few weeks? These generous donors will appreciate knowing who the recipient of their item actually was and will be happy to hear from you. Thank you from the Auction Team!

WHAT IS PER CAPITA? presbyterian logo

We're been asked about the Per Capita fee for 2015. We thought some folks might like to know what this is.

For those who ordered offering envelopes, you should have received them by now. When you have them in hand, open the cover and the first envelope says "per capita".

What is "per capita"? It is merely our share of helping to pay for Presbytery's 2015 expenses. All Presbyterian churches in our area make these annual contributions to Presbytery. Each active member of our church is asked to contribute $37.00. If you have questions, call Erica Waterman at the church office.

VOLUNTEER FOR FPNIfamily promise logo

If you are interested or already volunteering, please complete the attached form and drop it by the office. Our next Family Promise week that we will be hosting is scheduled for March 15-22. Please contact Eric & Chris Fehr or Jack & Ginger Higens or Laura Harris if you can provide food, meals, hosting services or stay overnight. Thank you for your prayerful consideration. (VOLUNTEER FORM)

 DAYLIGHT SAVINGS BEGINS MARCH 8
S.S. ARKade UPDATES

The upper elementary age children are having a great time every Sunday in the S.S.ARKade as they travel to different Learning Ports and add stickers to their S.S.ARKade passports. Children earn stickers for attendance, bringing their Bible and/or a friend, if they Know-A-Bible-Verse, or if they read and solve a mystery using scripture. Once a child fills a passport page with nine stickers they can choose a Beanie Baby to keep and take home or go to lunch at Rogers Burgers and Ice Cream. A few weeks ago Ms. Lou took the first boatload of S.S.ARKade shipmates to Rogers. Everyone had a great time!
