wadCarolyn King Selected as 2012 Anne Mackie Award Winner

Award will be presented at the NCWU holiday party on December 18.

This year's Anne Mackie Award winner, Carolyn King.

Each year NC Women United presents our Anne Mackie Award to recognize an individual's lifetime contribution to advocacy on behalf of women.

NCWU is pleased to announce the 2012 Anne Mackie award goes to the late Carolyn King and will be accepted by her husband.

Ms. King was a strong advocate for women throughout her life. She started her career working with the YWCA in Ohio, Kentucky and Raleigh. She was a force in the community during the desegregation of the schools, and led efforts providing improved day care and adult care. Her advocacy work included support for the ERA and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

Ms. King's friends will join NCWU supporters to remember her at the our annual holiday party on Tuesday, December 18 from 5 -7 pm at the Busy Bee in downtown Raleigh. The Busy Bee is located at 225 S. Wilmington Street. The award presentation will take place at 6 pm. NCWU will provide appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages. A cash bar will be available.

If you plan to join us, help our planning and RSVP by clicking here by COB Friday. (But if you find at the last minute that you can make it, do join us!)

NCWU thanks all those who submitted the many strong nominations that were received this year. We are humbled to see such work that aligns with our goals and follows the inspiring lead of Anne Mackie.

It's been a busy year for NC Women United

The year started with our participation in the leadership of NC Women Matter, a new coalition formed to get out the women's vote. Many of the NCWU member organizations also participated starting with training in March, letter writing campaigns through the summer, and phone banking in the fall. They also created an set of position papers on issues affecting women that complements the work that we do.

We released our Report Card on the 2011 Legislative Session in April. If you haven't seen it, you may want to check out the issues listed there as we prepare to go into the 2013 session. Read more ...

Women's Agenda Assemblies were held from the coast to the mountains with small groups discussing the issues of the Draft Women's Agenda. While some Assemblies included voter registration information linked to the NC Women Matter efforts, if you were tied up with other activities before the election, it's not too late to schedule an Assembly for January. See the online resources or contact [email protected] for details.
