"Be Distinguished" blog delivers positive messages and inspiration for today's young woman
Almost one year ago, Distinguished Young Women set out to impact young women in a brand new way. The idea was to create a space where past participants of the program could provide meaningful and relevant content for teen girls. Sixteen participants from the Class of 2011 signed on as contributors and the Be Distinguished blog was born!

Fast forward to today. Our first group of contributors are now in their second year of college and have "passed on the torch" to a brand new batch of distinguished young women. We are proud to introduce our Be Distinguished blog contributors from the Class of 2012. These outstanding young women have been posting to the blog since October and will continue through June 2013. We invite you to visit the blog and get a taste of the insight provided by these remarkable young women.

Volunteers Make it Happen!

Name:
Richard Hawkins

Program:
Distinguished Young Women of Payne County (Oklahoma)

Current Volunteer Role: Chairman

How long have you served in a volunteer role with Distinguished Young Women?
I created the Payne County's Junior Miss program in 1999 and have served as Chair since that time. We held our first program in 2001.

When/how did you get "hooked" on Distinguished Young Women?
Growing up in Miami, OK, I became aware of the Ottawa County's Junior Miss program at an early age since the state program was held in Miami for many years. One of my sister's best friends was selected state winner in the early 1960's. In 1999, while watching America's Junior Miss finals on TV with my 17 year old daughter, a message came across the screen to contact the state director of your state if you are interested in producing a local program. My daughter said "Daddy, you can do that, call the state director." I said, "that's a big deal" to which she replied, "Dad you can do big deals." I'm now directing my 14th annual program.

What is your "day job?"
I'm retired after 35 years as a computer programmer for Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. I'm involved in other non-profit volunteering, including the Stillwater Lions Club. I'm also training in the field of Financial Services.

What is your favorite aspect of the Distinguished Young Women program?
To see the girls come out of our program with a sense of accomplishment, that they can now take the world by storm, and do anything they set their hearts and minds to in order to make a positive difference, not only in their lives but in everyone they touch.

What has been your most rewarding moment as a volunteer for Distinguished Young Women?
I had a mother write me this note after a recent program, "Mr. Hawkins, Thank you and your staff for all the time and effort that was dedicated to the Jr. Miss Program. We are very proud of what our daughter accomplished by taking each part and mastering to the best of her ability. She was on a journey, and through the journey she strengthened and/or learned about commitment, self-confidence, courage, responsibility, and self-esteem within herself. She enjoyed the friendships that she made with the staff and the other contestants. This experience has touched her and will always follow her. Junior Miss is all about being your "Best Self" and she has proved that in our eyes. All the best, Mom"

Across the country, more than 17,000 volunteers make it possible for Distinguished Young Women programs to take place at the local, state and national level. Each month, we will feature one of our outstanding volunteers to give a closer look at the individuals who work tirelessly to ensure our mission is carried out nationwide.
