A message from Board President Joy Grodnick | |
At the heart of Distinguished Young Women is a simple mission...to positively impact the lives of young women. This mission is near and dear to my heart and I have worked for the past 13 years as a member of the national board of directors to help this mission come to life. It is an honor and privilege to lead Distinguished Young Women into a new phase of growth and development as the president of the board of directors for the 2012-2013 term. I am just as passionate about this organization now as I was when I joined the board in 1999, and I look forward to doing all that I can to help this program grow, strengthen and reach new heights.
I would like to personally express my thanks and gratitude to each of our 2012-2013 board members. These individuals contribute their time, energy and resources to ensure that Distinguished Young Women thrives. Over the next year, they will provide ideas, guidance and leadership focused on furthering our efforts across the country with the goal of empowering more young women than ever before. I am thankful for the commitment of service each of these individuals has made to this program and I look forward to working together as a team.
As we make our way through the holidays and wrap up another year, I am excited about the prospects that lie ahead for Distinguished Young Women. The board of directors along with the national headquarters staff is energized by many new ideas and we are working tirelessly to put plans into action. With focus and dedication, we have our sights set on making a difference in the lives of young women and we will strive each day to further the mission of Distinguished Young Women.
Hugs,
Joy

| Volunteers Make it Happen! | Name:Jessica White
Program:Distinguished Young Women of NebraskaCurrent Volunteer Role: I mostly serve as choreographer. I choreograph fitness, self expression, and the opening number for the girls each year. I am also a part of planning and recruiting for the program.
How long have you served in a volunteer role with Distinguished Young Women?
I became involved my senior year in high school (2007) when I won the title of Nebraska's Junior Miss. I have been involved ever since. I choreographed for the program for the first time the year I passed on my title.
When/how did you get "hooked" on Distinguished Young Women?
The Nebraska board is incredibly genuine and supportive. I've built relationships with many of the members, especially our chair Stacey Olsan. I also fell in love with the cause of Distinguished Young Women and the experience it offers to girls...sometimes giving them opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have. I love now being a part of that experience.
What is your "day job?"
I am a full-time executive manager at Target. I am in charge of sales, staffing, and talent management. I never thought I'd work retail, but working and being around people constantly is what makes me love my job.
What is your favorite aspect of the Distinguished Young Women program?
Again, I love the experience and opportunities the program offers to so many talented individuals. The base of the program "be your best self" is something else I love. "Be your best self" is something that has remained with me since I went through the program.
What has been your most rewarding moment as a volunteer for Distinguished Young Women?
I've built and maintained many relationships through involvement with this program. Each year I look forward to meeting a new group of girls. They always work hard for me and make the choreography and program come together even with the short amount of time they are given. I really can't explain the feeling of excitement I get during their performance and how proud I feel when a new girl is selected as the winner each year.
Across the country, more than 17,000 volunteers make it possible for Distinguished Young Women programs to take place at the local, state and national level. Each month, we will feature one of our outstanding volunteers to give a closer look at the individuals who work tirelessly to ensure our mission is carried out nationwide.
