Update from Christina Maxwell
Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2012 |
A few weeks ago, I was sipping a Pumpkin Spice Latte in front of a fireplace inside an Ann Arbor Starbucks, taking shelter from the cold. Out of the blue, a girl approached me and congratulated me on being the Distinguished Young Woman of America. She excitedly explained that she was Cindy Lee, Michigan's 2010 Junior Miss, and a University of Michigan student. I was reminded of how beautifully intertwined Distinguished Young Women is with my being in Michigan today.
It is unreal that I'm already halfway through my first semester at UM! The incredible scholarships I received through Distinguished Young Women are allowing me to be here to receive the very best training for pursuing my dreams of Broadway.
In UM's Musical Theatre program, I am working harder than ever before. It is mind blowing how much I have grown in this short time. I am constantly challenged and questioned by brilliant and nurturing teachers. I love my classes, from ballet to theory to writing. I've enjoyed my writing class so much that I'm now planning to minor in Writing.
 | Loving University of Michigan football! |
I am surrounded by such inspirational and talented people here. One of the seniors is currently on leave playing the lead role in a Broadway show! In addition to the phenomenal students, I've been exposed to brilliant Broadway stars including Alex Gemignani, who played Jean Valjean in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables.
Although it has been an adjustment being so far from my family and Southern home, I've found communities here that bring me joy. I'm attending an incredibly welcoming church and going to YoungLife College, a Christian campus ministry. I've loved going to football games in the Big House! It is magical to see the streets of Ann Arbor flooded with blue and maize and to do the wave with 114,000 other people!
 | American Idol Winner Scotty McCreery and I before I sang the National Anthem at his recent concert in Raleigh, NC! |
A few weeks ago, I traveled to the N.C. State Fair to perform the National Anthem for American Idol, Scotty McCreery's, concert. I had a blast meeting Scotty, seeing my family and sharing with young girls from the audience about Distinguished Young Women. Now, I'm getting ready to head to Mobile, AL soon to perform for the Sunday Night Sensation fundraiser and Veteran's Day events. I couldn't be more excited!
My journey through college auditions and Distinguished Young Women has come full circle and it is such a blessing to now be learning, growing and exploring at my dream school.

Volunteers Make it Happen! | Name:Lyn Bergdoll
Program:Distinguished Young Women of York County (Pennsylvania)Current Volunteer Role: Chairman
How long have you served in a volunteer role with Distinguished Young Women?
This program has been a valued part of my life ever since I won the local title when I was in high school. I began to choreograph the local program in 1970. In 1975, I began to also direct and produce the program. I continued with the above, and in 1993 became Chair of the program.
When/how did you get "hooked" on Distinguished Young Women?
As mentioned above, I was the local winner when in high school.
What is your "day job?"
I am the Executive Director of York Little Theatre. I also teach the Dance Program at York College of Pennsylvania.
What is your favorite aspect of the Distinguished Young Women program?
Knowing that we are providing a life-changing experience for the participants is inspirational! It is an opportunity to bring scholarships and so much more to the students in our community. It is also a way for the community to work together to support and recognize these exceptional young women, making everyone proud!
What has been your most rewarding moment as a volunteer for Distinguished Young Women?
Every time parents of a former participant tell me how this experience changed their daughter's life, I am filled with pride for the values and benefits of this program. This happens quite often, and every time my faith in today's youth and in Distinguished Young Women is renewed.
Across the country, more than 17,000 volunteers make it possible for Distinguished Young Women programs to take place at the local, state and national level. Each month, we will feature one of our outstanding volunteers to give a closer look at the individuals who work tirelessly to ensure our mission is carried out nationwide.
