While there are no rules in yoga, there is a code of etiquette that students follow out of respect for their fellow yogis and yoginis.
DO's:
- Arrive early so you have time to settle in. Habitually arriving late shows disrespect to the other students and the teacher.
- Switch OFF your mobile phones and please LEAVE them in the cubbies in the studio lobby. Everyone in class (including you!) showed up to get some peace of mind.
- Leave your bags in the cubbies in the studio lobby. The front desk staff is there to ensure your belongings are safe.
- Remove your shoes before entering the studio.
- Avoid wearing perfumes to class. Many people are chemically sensitive or disturbed by strong scents.
- Share the studio space with others. Accommodating one another is flexibility of the mind and a healthy yogic attitude. If you need to shift to make space for others, do that with a smile.
- Wipe your bodily essence that might have dripped during your practice on to the floor or the studio rental mat that others share with you. Mat wipes are next to the blocks and blankets.
DON'Ts:
- Don't walk out in the middle of Savasana (final relaxation). If you need to leave, do so before Savasana starts or just let your body and mind relax till the end. Aside from distracting the other students, you'll miss the deep relaxation at the end that is arguably the most important part of the practice.
- Don't eat immediately before class. Yoga is best done on an empty stomach, so if you need to nourish yourself, eat 90 mins or more before the class starts.
