HU QUARTET PARADE
Video of the Week: Harmony University Presents!
We had a fantastic crop of quartets at Harmony U this year, each completely different from the next. Distinct identities were the theme: gospel, doo-wop, vintage jazz, beatboxing... we had it all covered. After a week of coaching musical and performance skills, they all had a chance to strut their stuff on our Friday night show. Take a look!

HAL LOVES YA, BABY
Hal Leonard Publishing says:
"Get Guys Singing with Barbershop Harmony"
Nothing better than being known by the friends you keep, and our partnership with Hal Leonard, the world's largest of sheet music, certainly proves it. Look what they have to say in their back-to-school promotion to retailers:

Isn't it great that our sheet music sales advance our mission of spreading barbershop to new audiences, in addition to generating revenue? #winning

YBQC MAKES IT EASY TO PARTICIPATE
2017 Youth Barbershop Quartet Contest simplifies entry process, extends reach
More singers, of all ages, of all levels of experience. That's the goal of the 2017 Youth Barbershop Quartet Contest, and to reach that goal, we have  streamlined the entry process and expanded the activities it will encompass. Overall, we expect it will be easier, faster, and more equitable for folks already in the barbershop orbit, and for the broader universe of folks not yet drawn into our irresistible gravity well.

Some highlights:
  • The qualification process will take place entirely online, making it easier to capture all youth quartet participation in North America and around the world.
  • ALL youth quartets who submit a video entry will receive an invitation to attend the 2017 International Convention at Las Vegas, where they can participate in an honor chorus that will learn more about barbershop craft and perform for various opportunities throughout the convention week, including a performance during the chorus contest.
  • Based on scores from their video performances, 25 quartets will be invited to compete in the finals.

Future Directions Survey is now live!
Want to help lead BHS into the future? Spend some time with our Future Directions Survey! We're looking for input from all corners of the Society...
so that means YOU.

It will only require about 20 minutes to complete on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. And, in appreciation for your efforts, we will send a $20 Gift Certificate for the Harmony Marketplace to 50 randomly selected respondents.

MAKE THEM.. er US... HEAR YOU
Coming Soon to a Fall Convention near you:
BHS Listening Sessions
We can't plan for our future if we don't understand what really matters to our current and future members.  And we can't do that without listening, really listening, to what you have to say about the challenges we face and the alternative paths we have before us.
Your feedback is crucial!

Every district Fall Convention will feature a brief presentation by a member of the Society Strategic Planning Team - primarily at the district House of Delegates (HOD) meeting - followed by a Listening Session. Check with your district leaders to verify the exact time and place of the presentation and the Listening Session during your fall district convention weekend.

TURN YOUR RADIO ON
WoodSongs radio show featuring RINGMASTERS debuts this weekend
Ringmasters, our 2012 International Quartet Champion, headlines a wide-ranging cast of barbershop performers on episode 854 of WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour, premiering this weekend on more than 500 radio stations in the U.S. and around the world on the American Forces Radio Network.

Recorded live at the historic Lyric Theater in Lexington, Kentucky, WoodSongs is a weekly celebration of Americana and roots music, and they were delighted to devote a full hour-long show to barbershop. Recorded the Monday following our 2016 convention, we were able to assemble a nifty cast spanning all ages, including
Check your local public radio station listings for show time in your area. The video edition of WoodSongs will air later in the fall, but in the meantime, visit the BHS blog for a few sneak peeks from the WoodSongs YouTube Channel

LET'S MAKE SOMETHING GREAT... TOGETHER
Outreach grants program now accepting proposals
Doing all the singing by ourselves, for ourselves, is only part of the story. That's why the Barbershop Harmony Society, together with the generous donor resources of Harmony Foundation International, delivers hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant assistance each year. We are seeking promising projects at the chapter and district levels that focus on:
  • Outreach projects that promote singing among seniors, youth, within communities, and among underserved populations.
  • Projects that strengthen chapters, districts, or the Society through ventures that represent new approaches and techniques within the Barbershop Harmony Society.
Our next grant application window opens from September 1 through September 30, 2016 for projects occurring from January 1- December 31, 2017.
