YOUTH IN HARMONY... ALL OF 'EM
Youth Chorus Festival trial expansion in 2017 opens door to mixed and women's ensembles
We all want more barbershop activity involving more singers in more schools...and, in particular, an increased number of sustainable school programs that continue to spread barbershop joy. That's why the 2017 International Youth Barbershop Chorus Festival will accept entries from women's and mixed choruses in addition to men's choruses.
For years, music educators have told us they'd love to bring their choirs to the Festival, but they simply can't restrict student participation to men only. Allowing only a portion of their students to participate means that many of our interested teachers have to (reluctantly) say no to attending.
As a direct result, we are offering an experimental expanded format in 2017 to create more opportunities for barbershop harmony, enable more Music Educators and students to engage in our Outreach programs, and awaken more youth to our culture of lifelong singing... bringing us even closer to our goal of a better world, singing.
EXCLUSIVE: What's new for the 2017 Youth Chorus Festival?

VIDEO OF THE WEEK The Hut-Sut Song Swedish quartet Stockholm Syndrome charmed (and perhaps confused) the crowd in Pittsburgh with this 1940's novelty song. Recorded by Mel Torme', Freddy Martin and Spike Jones, this tune pops up from time to time in movies and television, ranging from The Muppet Show to From Here To Eternity.
And you thought they just made it all up, didn't you!?!

NOT FUNNY, BUT INFORMATIVE
Remember to complete your legal filings, then report them in eBiz

All U.S. chapters, districts and subsidiaries (Brigades, etc.) must report to the IRS by May 15th each year using Form 990 or Form 990N. Failure to file on time can result in either financial penalties for each day a return is late or loss of non-profit status or both. Canadian Chapters must file on or before June 30 with the Canada Revenue Agency. Filing these annual reports with government agencies isn't just a good idea; it's the law.
The Barbershop Harmony Society also requires that ALL chapters, both US and Canadian, must complete a financial review for 2015 by May 15, 2016. This is not difficult, is not an audit and merely requires that a financially savvy person, other than the treasurer, inspect your books.
After you've filed your paperwork, be sure to report that fact in ebiz.barbershop.org to ensure the entire organization can accurately report on compliance. Details, links and forms are found in the Document Center. |

SMARTY-PANTS MUSICIAN
Mathematics meets music
One can hardly be a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society without being familiar with the work of David Wright. David's achievements span historical research, arranging, directing, coaching and teaching - not to mention being a delightful guy and trusted mentor.
Also, he has a day job: Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Washington University in St. Louis. We said he was smart, right?
Now, we all know about just intonation - we live and die by ringing chords by nudging around just so. Well, David recently brought that practice, and the mathematics that describe it, to a prestigious forum: the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
