VIDEO OF THE WEEK

And now, all the way from Hong Kong...

Meet the Diocesan Boy's School Choir! Made up of young men between the ages of 15-17, this group has just starting singing barbershop as a part of their repertoire... and are loving it! This is the first choir trip AND first visit to the US for many of the guys, so we are THRILLED that they are making the long journey just for us.

Be sure to catch the chorus in the Youth Chorus Festival on Friday of Midwinter week. We know you'll show them a good time!

NO, NOT THAT NASHVILLE
Nashville deadlines are approaching!

Plans for our International Convention in Nashville are well underway and we're getting pretty excited about all the awesome events coming your way this July! Here are a few updates to keep you on track:

Early-bird Pricing ends tomorrow at midnight. All registrations purchased on Friday, January 15 will get the lower rate. Prices go up $50 per ticket after the deadline. Visit our event page to register.

Housing registration opens Monday, January 25. Attendees should book accommodations through our site to receive our MUCH lower convention rates for the week. (Don't call the hotel, silly! They won't know what you're talking about.) Look for the links to go live by mid-morning, Central time.
MAKING A NAME FOR YOURSELF
ID & Ticket = Badge at Midwinter

In order to ensure the safety of our attendees and prevent mis-use of our event badges (yes, it happens...), a ticket and ID will be required to print your convention badge. This small change will bring us in line with industry standard protocols and ensure that our events will continue to be the type of friendly and safe environment that barbershoppers pride themselves on.

Some tips for registering:

What will I need to register in Reno? Please bring your ticket and a picture ID in order to create your name badge, pick up a program, and other information.

What if I want to print name badges for my entire party? You will only be permitted to print the number of badges equal to the number of tickets you have.

What if I am traveling with a minor who doesn't have a picture id? Those under 18 will still require a ticket to print a name badge, but will not require an id if they are present with their guardian or YCF chaperone.

What if I bought my "registration" from someone else? It is acceptable to have bought your registration from a chorus member or friend who couldn't attend. Just bring your picture id and the physical ticket in order to register.

Further questions? Please email us at customerservice@barbershop.org or visit the  ticketing/registration desk in the Tuscany foyer starting Wednesday (1/27) at 9:00 am.

Wanna get fired up about spreading harmony?
Watch THIS. And then watch it again...

"Everybody needs to know how to sing, because it's an important part of who we are." - Deke Sharon, Too Many Notes (and every barbershopper ever...)

We shared this video last week on social media, but it's so perfectly aligned with our belief that Making Music will Make A Difference that we just had to be sure you saw it. Deke will be with us at Midwinter, so you can thank him in person for using his own platform to encourage every person to sing. PREACH, brother!

BUT HOW MANY BARITONES *IS* THAT?

Whadda ya call....?
We're all familiar with a gaggle of geese, a pride of lions, a flock of seagulls, etc. Discerning word-fans will refer to James Lipton's An Exaltation of Larks, which lists hundreds of these, including a murder of crows, a parliament of owls, slouch of supermodels, a score of bachelors and so forth.

Let's try this with common barbershop terms. There's a chorus of singers, of course, and also...
  • an embarrassment of baritones
  • a wave of chorus directors
  • a bank of treasurers
  • a huddle of judges
  • a confusion of leads
  • a bray of baritones
  • a shimmer of tenors
  • a polish of coaches
  • a rumble of basses
  • a giggle of writers
  • a clutch of barbershop spouses

GET READY FOR YOUR CLOSE-UP

Get seen at Midwinter... and on the webcast!
There's still time to submit a big screen ad and/or sign up to exhibit in Reno! Support your youth chorus, root for your district's Senior quartet representative or advertise your chapter show! Prices are reduced at MidWinter so now is the time to make your voice known.

Deadline for big screen ads and exhibitor application is January 15th!

'TIL WE SING ONCE MORE

In memoriam: Larry Deters

Harmony Hall is saddened to share that, on January, 12, 2016, past Interim Society CEO Larry Deters passed away. A retired health care CEO in the Nashville area, he was selected to keep Society operations moving forward in the period between the retirement of CEO Ed Watson in July, 2011, and the hiring of current CEO Marty Monson in July, 2012.

Larry is fondly remembered by those he worked with at HQ and by his barbershop family here in Nashville as a dedicated servant of our mission to spread harmony and a kind man who shared his talents freely with his fellow singers.
