WE WILL NOT FORGET

In Tribute

Veteran's Day and Remembrance Day, both held on November 11th, offer us not only a time to thank our veterans, but an opportunity to listen to their stories. As we honor those who have served, we also remember those we have lost.

Each country has its own traditions and customs surrounding the observance of this day, but share and recognize the common themes of gratitude, solemnity, and service.

Rules you'll WANT to follow
Oh, this is some great stuff! Written specifically for an opera company, these "Cardinal Rules" will energize and uplift any rehearsal room and ensemble. More than just a list of rules, these concepts encourage us to honor our fellow singers and allow creativity to grow exponentially.
We especially love #5!
And #3!
And #6...

OK, so we can't pick a favorite, either. Guess we'll just have to follow them all.

BIGGEST LITTLE CONVENTION IN THE WORLD

Need a reason to go to Midwinter? Here's 10 of 'em! Here's a hint... the gold medal count just increased by about 45. Check it out!

HARMONY LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

Harmony, Inc. crowns new champions

Verona, New York was ringing with the sounds of Harmony... Harmony, Inc.'s International Convention and Competition brought singers from across North America together for a weekend of nearly non-stop singing. Barbershop Harmony Society CEO Marty Monson served as emcee for one of several shows and joined leaders from HI, Sweet Adelines, and the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) in celebrating the weekend's events. Plenty of BHS members were in attendance serving on the judging panel, or coaching, or cheering for family and friends. (And, of course, for late night tag singing!)
VIPS posing AND taking the picture!

The quartet contest was a tight race amongst the top three, with Live Wire, featuring 2015 HU faculty member Katie Taylor on Lead, landing the top spot. (Fun Fact: This is Katie's third championship, on her THIRD voice part. #fancy)

Village Vocal Chords brought home their 20th gold medal with a creative and detailed Wizard of Oz package that wowed the crowd.

Complete scores and results can be found here, or check out some fun afterglow and attendee photos available on the Harmony, Inc. Facebook page. Congratulations to all on a great weekend!

GET TO KNOW US

Meet Ashley Brown, Customer Service Center Specialist

In October, the Society added Ashley Brown to our ranks as a new customer service center specialist. A Nashville native and recent graduate of the University of Tennessee, she comes with a passion for nonprofits and a lot of experience serving people. A lover of communities and the arts, she has been an enthusiastic addition to the staff. Ashley has been steadily learning the ropes here in Customer Service, and will start taking phone calls next week, so go easy on her!

If a book were written about your life, who would write it and why?
Neil Gaiman. He writes urban fantasy and always writes strong female characters. His characters are capable of saving themselves without needing a prince.

If you could change places with someone at the Barbershop Harmony Society headquarters, who would it be? What would you do?
I'd switch places with Ashley Torroll: Ashley for an Ashley! I've always been involved with outreach in my life and am really interested in grant writing. Plus she won the Halloween contest dressed as a cat, which is kind of like my spirit animal.

What is your weirdest quirk?
I do a really bad Larry David impression. (Editor's note: it really cracks us all up!)

What is one thing that you have learned about the barbershop community in your first month?
I was surprised at the diversity of ages. When you first think of barbershop as a
newcomer, you think it is for the older generation, but I am happy to find that it brings people of all ages together who are enthusiastic and passionate about singing.

What CD is in your car right now?
My boyfriend (Eric Phillippi) is the lead singer and guitar player in a rock 'n' roll band here in Nashville called Reverse Buzzards, so I have their CD in my car always!
