EMERALD CITY TO MUSIC CITY

SEA > BNA

Alaska Airlines is the newest kid on the block at Nashville International Airport and a barbershop connection brought two quartets to the official party at Gate B-8. The inaugural flight was piloted by Captain Mike Rinehart, veteran pilot and bass singer in Northwest Sound Chorus, who brought along a quartet of chorus members just for the occasion. Nashville quartet High Gravity entertained the crowd in Nashville as the flight arrived... then the combined groups performed a short set for the passengers.

Welcome to Nashville, Alaska Airlines!

SUNSHINE ON A CLOUDY DAY
NEW RELEASE: My Girl

Rob Campbell's arrangement of the classic Motown song was arranged for the Musical Island Boys. Channel The Temptations, (or these guys!) and you can't go wrong with this one.

In a New York Times article, songwriter Smokey Robinson shared the origins of the song:
"I wrote "My Girl" in 1964 specifically for the Temptations, with hopes they would make it a hit. While David sang lead, the rest of the guys in the group began to add things. They made up their own background vocals, like "hey-hey hey" and a series of "my girls" echoing David's vocal. The Temptations were the greatest background maker-uppers ever."

The quartet kit  includes 4 pieces of sheet music, one learning track CD and all related licenses.

Zero8 brings home gold in Remini
Hot off the presses from Zero8:

"We're extremely proud and happy to have won first place gold medal in the Folk/Gospel/Spiritual Category at the International Choral Competition in Rimini (Italy)! Per proudly displays the diploma and gold medal!"

HELLO MY RAGTIME GAL(S)
Jimmy Fallon & The Ragtime Gals strike again... this time with Joseph Gordon-Leavitt
The Ragtime Gals never shy away from... interesting musical choices. As the title suggests, Rihanna's revenge hit "B*tch Better Have My Money" doesn't appear on any "family friendly" lists, but then again, that's why The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon airs well after the kids have gone to bed. Consider yourself warned!

Fun Fact: RTG regular Tom Shillue had to sit this one out, but subbing in for him is his faithful baritone Bob Martin.

INTL CONVENTIONS DOWN UNDER!
BHA and BHNZ convention results are in!
It's been a wild couple of weeks for barbershop in the Southern Hemisphere. Both Barbershop Harmony New Zealand and Barbershop Harmony Australia held their National contests, each with a hugely successful youth competition included as part of the event.

Top finishers in New Zealand were returning YBQC and BHS qualifiers The Mission, with VocalFX defending their title as chorus champions. Polytonix  earned their first Small Chorus Championship. All of the contest results can be found here.

Singers around the world can catch the contest action from BHA by visiting their delayed webcast page. Blindside came away with the Youth Quartet Champion title, followed later in the week by Lockout Quartet and Sound Connection Chorus to complete the winner's circle. Scoresheets and updates are posted on the Barbershop Harmony Australia Facebook page

SING IN SOLITUDE OR LAUGH IN THE MARKETPLACE... HMM.
The tug of war between fame and infamy
It's a constant tug of war for barbershop in the media. On the one side, we have great singing appearances such as Musical Island Boys on NBC's Today show (July 2015), Crossroads on Fox & Friends (April 2015), Ringmasters on Today (April 2013), and many other appearances listed here.

On the other side are the times when barbershop is played for laughs, such as Peyton Manning's DirecTV commercial, or the incongruous humor of The Ragtime Gals, and stretching back to "Homer's Barbershop Quartet" on The Simpsons. (Interesting fact: four kids in music school in Sweden saw that episode, liked it, and decided to give barbershop a try. They named themselves Ringmasters. They got really good.)
