DON'T BE THAT GUY... BE A BARBERSHOPPER!

So. About that Direct TV ad featuring Peyton Manning...

We don't like it much either, but we figure that if barbershop quartets are mainstream enough to be made fun of in a HUGE national ad campaign we must be doing something right! So instead of getting mad and taking ourselves too seriously, we took the opportunity to poke some fun of our own with the help of comedian, barbershopper, and host of FOX's Red Eye Tom Shillue

Tom asked for an "official statement" from Harmony Hall that he could use in a segment on the comedy news show and we were happy to comply. (Side note: Marty Monson is a good sport, folks, and always goes along with our crazy video schemes. The man has no fear.) The result is a fun and funny segment on Red Eye that features A LOT of great things about barbershop from the correspondents. The best quotes are at the end, so stick around!
BONUS: The segment will air again this Saturday (9/12) at 11pm, complete with the short video of Instant Classic that was left out of this clip from Red Eye's web site. Tune in or set those DVRs to see our champs ring a tag on national television!

SATIRE ALERT! It's a comedy show, after all...

Open boards energize chapters

Want to solidify your chapter's ties to your local community? Develop fundraising connections? Acquire new opportunities for gigs and menus? Be willing to consider and accept some new thoughts about "giving to the community" and potentially reaching new community audiences and singing organizations alike?

Consider adding community members to your chapter board of directors. The Open Board pilot program allows chapters to include non-BHS members on their boards of directors during the 2015 and 2016 calendar years. Chapters with a board size of more than seven will be able to include up to two such community board members; all other chapters will be able to include one non-Barbershopper.

Several chapters have already extended Board status to non-members, and are seeing positive results. One led directly to creating a quick and easy fundraising activity that yielded a quick thousand dollars. Interestingly, at a recent meeting of some big-name chapters, half had tried it, and the others were skeptical. After discussing their experiences, the remaining chapters were all eager to get on board.

SONG OF THE WEEK

5 songs that feature a soloist
Most every chorus has one truly remarkable chorus member with a deep bass voice, a clarion high tenor, or a dramatic baritone powerhouse. Since we know you already have the usual suspects (Old Man River, Bring Him Home, Sixteen Tons) let's go right to the heart of some new songs. Some of these are "Oh, yeah!" songs and you might lose an hour or two on YouTube. Don't blame us, we warned you.

A FEW GOOD MEN
Midwinter highlight: The Recruits!
We had a fantastic time at Midwinter and CAN'T WAIT for our Reno convention. In addition to the Seniors Contest, amazing shows, and incredible venue... we've got youth chorus performances that will knock your socks off.

Here, The Recruits share their performance of "I Have Dreamed", a gorgeous Rodgers and Hammerstein ballad from The King and I.

SMARTY PANTS!
HU accepting Faculty applications
We provide two paths to be on faculty at HU. First, Harmony Hall reaches out to individuals who are doing great work and we simply invite them. This is way it was done since 1970... until last year. Now, second path is an open application  process. Love to teach what you know? Have a great class to share? Let us know about it

This is an unpaid, volunteer position. However, if you are accepted, we will reimburse all expenses AND you get to join the best group of barbershop experts EVER. Interested? Apply here!

MAKING FRIENDS, DOING GOOD

Tag... BHS is it!

Harmony Hall had a fun challenge come our way from the Nashville Symphony and got to participate in Spoontember, a hunger awareness campaign being put on by national food bank network Feeding America. Our "spoon selfie" is below and you can read more about the campaign here!

WORKING FOR A LIVING

Join the HQ team!

With the departure of the crazy-smart-and-super-talented Adam Scott (who is returning to school to become even smarter), Harmony Hall is accepting applications for an Arranger & Repertoire Manager who can groom new arranging talent, search out the next big hit chart, and keep Harmony Marketplace filled with high quality barbershop music... for YOU to enjoy. A strong preference for maple doughnuts is a plus, but not required.
