YEEEEEHAW!

Honors Chorus 2015 rocks the house at HU

The Honors Chorus has long been a fixture at Harmony University, giving men from all over the globe an opportunity to sing for one of the Society's top directors. This year, Aaron Dale kicked it up a notch with great charts, hip choreography, and tons of energy... and the guys loved it! Here's their version of "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident), Aaron's own arrangement made famous by OC Times. Catch the rest of the Honors Chorus performances here!

OUR STATE FAIR IS A GREAT STATE FAIR

GNU takes to the airwaves

Another case for connecting with your local arts community! When Minnesota Public Radio started to plan their annual MPR Day at the Fair, their Choral Initiative manager shared some video of Great Northern Union, recommending them as a perfect way to bring new energy to the stage. After a chat about logistics (considerably different than a typical concert venue) and song selection (there had to be at least some classical music for their radio listeners!), the deal was sealed. GNU gets to reach a new audience and MPR gains a whole new flock of supporters.

Won't be at the Fair? You can listen to the live broadcast in Minnesota and surrounding areas on Friday, September 4th at 2:00 CDT (http://www.mpr.org/listen/stations) or via their live stream over the internet (http://www.classicalmpr.org/listen).

SONG OF THE WEEK

WE say it's wonderful...

Last week's entry for SOTW contained a significant error! Many apologies for not properly recognizing the wonderful Katie Farrell and her contributions to our catalog. A dedicated Sweet Adeline director and quartet singer, Katie had a knack for beautiful arrangements that are touching in their elegant simplicity. To make it up in a small way, here's another gem: Rounders singing Katie Farrell's lovely interpretation of "They Say It's Wonderful".

KIND OF A BIG DEAL

A Reluctant Teenager, a Barbershop Quartet and a Revelation

As a part of the Virgin Eyes Series, in which arts critics write about a cultural work that they wish they could experience again for the first time, writer Neil Genzlinger shares a deeply personal story of his first exposure to barbershop and the role that moment played in his musical life. A must read!

GET OFF THE BENCH AND CHANGE THE WORLD
Grants application window opens next Tuesday
The Barbershop Harmony Society is continuing to expand the availability of grants that can help your chapter or district make a difference in the communities you serve. Thanks to funds underwritten by Harmony Foundation International, we have awarded an astounding $285,000 in 2015 to efforts to encourage singing among youth, seniors, and communities. That amount is expected to grow by ten percent next year, too!

Are YOU ready to make a difference? Another application window opens September 1 through October 31, so now is the time to get planning for 2016.

To assist you through the process of designing and applying for a grant, our Outreach team has released a few webinar videos. This week, Ashley Torroll introduces you to the WizeHive web platform that you'll use to complete the application process.

BIGGEST LITTLE CONVENTION IN THE WORLD

Think Midwinter is just contests? NOPE.

If you were in New Orleans last January, you know that the shows at Midwinter are top notch, featuring the best that the Society has to offer AND some once-in-a-lifetime collaborations. Here's a little reminder of what happens when we gather together and bring some serious talent all under one roof. Next time, plan to BE THERE!

Kicking Back To Barbershop... for real!
Recent Columbia College Chicago grad (and rabid barbershopper) Joshua Arizmendi was looking for a cool audio recording project and came up with a doozy! What if he could get a bunch of top quartets to record a song each and release an album? And what if the proceeds could go to youth quartet scholarships?? And what if everyone could choose how much to pay and download it instantly?!?!

Well. It all happened and the album is a reality. It includes fresh tracks from the 2015 Quartet Champions Instant Classic, as well as Forefront, Main Street, Lemon Squeezy, The Crush, After Hours, Quorum, Artistic License, McPhly, Newfangled Four, and the Hot Air Buffoons. (Not a bad list, right?)
