SONG OF THE WEEK

All the cool kids are singing... classic ballads?

It's true! If you were at Heinz Hall watching the  Collegiate Contest, you saw quartet after quartet singing great charts that have stood the test of time. Our song of the week features a goody that sounds like an oldie and was written in the 90s... the 1990s, that is. Special Feature bass singer William Hill wrote "You Are The One I Love" as a poem for his then-fiancee, collaborating with baritone Paul Olguin who set it to music and arranged it for the quartet.

Here, 2015 collegiate competitors Flightline bring it back to the contest stage in their bronze medal-winning performance in Pittsburgh. Purchase it for yourself at Harmony Marketplace!

RIDICULOUSLY GOOD-LOOKING

Barberpole Cats II: So hot right now

The second Polecat book is here! And, according to the latest numbers, almost 2,000 of you already have it. Way to go, winners! And now the digital version is available, too!

Just because International is over doesn't mean we won't finish spotlighting the arrangements in this important songbook. Next up:

I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)

I've Been Working on the Railroad

"I Don't Know Why" was arranged by recent lifetime achievement award winner Mel Knight. Mel is a champion of the everyman. His arrangements are accessible, yet well-crafted and fun to sing. Although "I Don't Know Why"
is the newest arrangement on this list we're sure it will be a staple for years to come. Its vocal range, shameless baritone tiddlies (it should be no surprise which part Mel sings), and fun key changes make it a welcome addition to the Polecat book.

Arranged by the late, great Roger Payne, the BHS published "I've Been Working On The Railroad" a few years back and it was a big hit with singers. (Did you know that all arranger fees Roger collected from this chart went to the Harmony Foundation to support Barbershop?) "Railroad" is a perfect example of how a great arranger can take a song everyone knows and 'barbershop' it up to fit our style. You have to look pretty hard to find a place where there's nothing happening in the texture... Roger stocked it full of every barbershop-ism: swipes, echos, you name it!

Can't remember the rest of the 12?
