Fantasy LEADing man

YOU built the quartet that will sing on the Saturday Night Spectacular in Pittsburgh, who will bring together the legacy of Pittsburgh native son Stephen Foster and an iconic arrangement from the great Ed Waesche.

Who will join the superstar lineup of Tim Waurick and Jim Henry? The lead spot was the most dynamic ballot of them all, with multiple contenders emerging as favorites and all worthy of the win. In the end, there can be only one... and the vote was clear.

This week, we introduce the Fantasy Quartet frontman -- the lead

SONG OF THE WEEK
Like The Tide At Its Ebb...
You've no doubt sung the tag and basked in its simplicity (thank you, Mr. Fred King) but did you know the song is a pretty quick learn? Thanks to a TimTrack, we'll bet you'll pick up this song faster than you would have thought possible.

Sung by The Oriole Four (Freddie's quartet), it's been covered by... geesh, you name it... The Allies, Da CapoThe Westminster Chorus, collegiate quartets galore, and for a reason: it's a perfect tenor feature. After you learn to navigate a few nonstandard Bavarian Sevenths (kidding: not a real thing,) we bet it becomes your favorite afterglow arrangement.

THE NEW POLECATS ARE HERE! THE NEW POLECATS ARE HERE! (ALMOST)
At Last! (not included)

The second Polecat book's long-awaited arrival is nearly here! We hope you get your copy in Pittsburgh. For now, here's a closer look at what's in it:

After You've Gone (Four Voices)
"After You've Gone" was sung by the mighty Four Voices quartet. Arranged by the great Don Gray and sung with a swing, this tune has popped up on many a show and afterglow by ensembles of every age. It's been seen on the contest stage recently, too. In the World Mixed contest, Tarzan and Jane wowed the audience with this tune and some clever (and unexpected!) choreography.

Bright Was the Night (Gas House Gang)
Arranged by the inimitable David Wright, this gorgeously simple chart was sung by our beloved champs, the Gas House Gang. They loved it so much they competed with it and added it to their album A Little Night Music.  Known for its sweet and low intro and epic tag, it's a perfect addition for the Polecat sequel.

In case you missed it, here's the list:

  • After You've Gone
  • Bright Was The Night
  • Caroline
  • (When It's) Darkness On The Delta
  • Drivin' Me Crazy
  • From The First Hello To The Last Goodbye
  • Goodbye, My Coney Island Baby / We All Fall
  • Hello Mary Lou (Goodbye Heart)
  • I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)
  • I've Been Workin' On The Railroad
  • Lida Rose /Will I Ever Tell You
  • Over The Rainbow

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Big in Japan!
They make faces, they play brass instruments, they sing like girls for goodness sake (oh, wait...), and they simply entertain the heck out of every audience they meet. Freshly returned from a visit to Japan and the Tokyo Barbers Chorus, Storm Front will next take the stage in Pittsburgh at the AIC show
and we CAN'T WAIT!

Here's a sample of their "genius" to tide you over...

Oh... did you want to hear them sing? Try this... um... classic.

THE REAL BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE
Front row seats? Psh... SO last year.

Most Barbershoppers think they can score contests as well as the judges. Now you can prove it - from the vantage point of the judging area itself!

Harmony Foundation and the Contest & Judging program are teaming up to auction off a single seat at each & every contest session! So if you've ever wanted to test out your judging chops, you can bid on a seat at the grown-ups table and be a "Judge for a Day." Bidding is open now for Pittsburgh, at www.bestseat.org.

Funds received go to Harmony Foundation International to help defray the expenses for such efforts as the Collegiate Quartet Contest, Youth Chorus Festival, Youth Harmony Workshops, Harmony Explosion Camps, and Harmony University Scholarships for Music Educators.

 What do you get?

  1. A guest judge name tag and complete set of scoring forms for your selected judging category.
  2. Following the convention, a chart showing your scores compared to the official panel members in your selected judging category.
  3. An invitation to join the official panel at all meals and snacks at intermissions associated with your selected contest session.
  4. The chance to sit in and observe the evaluations sessions after the contest.

And more...

NEW LOOK!
New web sites to debut!

Life is growth and change, and we think you'll see plenty of both in Barbershop Harmony Society new sites deploying next week.

Our flagship site www.barbershop.org sports a clean new look that will display beautifully on all devices. A new platform should speed development of more kinds of content, and enhanced search capabilities will make it easier to find, enjoy, and share with your friends.

The new design will also integrate many previously-separated sub-sites such as barbershopconvention.com, harmonyuniversity.org and others, into a single, searchable location.

Most notable will be the redesigned, super-speedy, mobile friendly Harmony Marketplace, which will migrate to a new address at shop.barbershop.org. A robust new ecommerce platform will make it faster and easier to shop for recordings, sheet music, apparel, and more. You should see immediate improvements in receiving your orders, as your online purchases move directly from website to our shipping department. You'll get immediate email confirmations for placing an order, see it move into our processing department, and receive UPS or US Postal Service tracking codes when it leaves Harmony Hall.

Sheet music search has been beefed up, with ability to search on arranger, title, and category.

Look for the new sites to begin rolling out early next week.
