Barbershop wins hearts and minds at choral director summit

Two years after exhibiting in our first National ACDA convention in a long time, we've seen a lot of progress towards becoming more legitimate in the eyes of the choral world. The attendance at all of our events (interest session, reading session and showcase) were either full or standing room only.

The booth stayed busy the entire time, with visitors mostly interested in our music. It's amazing to hear how barbershop music has helped their choral programs. Once we got to know them a little better, we would educate them about our other opportunities; directing one of our chapters, outreach/granting collaborations with our local chapters, Harmony University for music educators/ directors, attending our Youth Chorus Festival, choral curriculum for middle school and high school music programs, etc. We have many more friends celebrating barbershop than we recognize.

We are making progress. How do we know? Teachers told us!

"I thank you for the renewed energy that is apparent in your organization. I can't tell you how many excited BHS members I talked with in SLC."

- Dr. Tim Sharp, Executive Director, American Choral Directors Association

"Barbershop really covers so many areas - education, lifelong singing, male chorus, female chorus, etc. I'm really glad we are collaborating and look forward to more in the future."

- Dr. Mary Hooper, Professor of Choral Music, Wheaton College

"I'm very proud to be a member of the BHS in this era of increasing legitimacy. You are doing great work."

- Tom Metzger, CEO, Groupanizer

"We decided to do barbershop for the first time. By the end, their ears were working so much better. When they heard a chord for the first time, that's when intonation made sense. A director can whip them and whip them but, when they hear the chord, it's a whole different ball game. Now they're coming back and they're asking for more."

- Dr. Sarah Parks, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Music Program, St. Norbert College

CBQC moves to premium venue

Heinz Hall, home to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, is the perfect acoustical setting for the 2015 CBQC, sponsored by Harmony Foundation International. We think the experience of singing in this beautiful 2,661-seat hall, will be a "mountaintop moment" for the quartets, and a classy start to the week for our guests. One more reason to join us for an incredible week of great performances in Pittsburgh!

Quartets are beginning to sign up for qualifying events at district conventions and by video -- should be epic!

MORE SINGING | MORE LEARNING | MORE FUN

HU @ PGH + U= AWESOME

Great shows and thrilling contests are only part of a barbershop convention experience. Look for an innovative lineup of new classes at the 2015 International Convention in Pittsburgh. We pried a few course descriptions out of Donny Rose, and they're just the beginning.

Sing and Name That Chord: a primer the most common harmonies - finding them in the voice, and noticing them every time they recur. We'll use recorded examples (audio or video as equipment allows) from a few styles of vocal music, listening to and mimicking the most common methods of harmonization.

In the Groove - How to make backbeat songs really swing. Various swing grooves will be explored.

Master Your Break - Make the most of your voice. Learn techniques that will let you effortlessly sing up and down through your vocal break.

More way cool stuff to be announced. Register now for the convention!

Pathfinder Chorus stars on Nebraska Public Television
Here's a nice presentation of a barbershop chapter in a clear, flattering way. The program aired statewide.

ACTUALLY, THERE IS TREBLE
Previously...
How could we not publish this irresistible little ditty from newcomer Meghan Trainor? With an infectious melody sung by the alto, this SATB pop chart is sure to garner audience recognition. Arranger Wayne Grimmer assures us this chart is easily learned and perfect for collaborations.

This year we really ARE all about that bass. Wait for three more brand new arrangements featuring bass melody. No more bum bum bums, or doo doo doo songs, no siree.

They're wearing everyday walking around clothes: shorts, tees, jeans. The lighting isn't great, the camera angle shows junky fans and a nondescript classroom, and the audio is only pretty good. But a YouTube video of Sweet Adelines semifinalists GQ (Girls Quartet) has garnered more 1.2 million views and made them "Internet Famous."

The quartet appears this week on "A Prairie Home Companion" on most U.S. public radio stations.

Harmony University offers Next Gen and YWIH Chorus programs

One can hardly overstate the quality and excitement of these great summer programs for young singers. World-champion quartet singers and directors lead an immersive week of close harmony choral singing, plus electives offered in vocal technique, theory, arranging, song writing, history, improvised harmony and much more.

Look around. Consider offering a Harmony University scholarship to eager students. You'll be paid back in the joy you've brought through this open door... and maybe in a future chorus director or quartet mate! Get details and registration.

CHAPTER ETERNAL

In memoriam: Dan "Fair Weather" Henry Bowser

Dan Henry, veteran Society emcee and quartet funny man, died February 28 in his suburban Kansas City home of complications from emphysema. He was 89.

Dan had received the 2014 BHS Dave LaBar Emcee Award at the Las Vegas Convention last summer. His picture had appeared in the most recent Harmonizer as he received his 67-year Society membership card from the other three members of his senior comedy quartet, Tone-Henge. Dan was better known as baritone of the Merry Mugs, one of the first Society quartets to represent the BHS on USO tours of the Far East.

After his picture in The Harmonizer, he wrote his beloved Heart of America Chorus, which he directed in the early 1970s, "I am so proud of my now 68 Society years because of the friendships formed by the finest hobby in the world." Memorials are requested to Harmony Foundation International.
