MIDWINTER CONVENTION | January 6-11, 2015
All-Chapter Chorus Challenge: Marty Monson
Donny Rose, Director of Harmony University, called out a few people he thinks ought to sing in this chorus. Naturally, CEO Marty Monson wasn't going to play second fiddle (or at least anything lower than second,) so he quickly issued his own challenge.
Sign up today! You'll get a t-shirt, learning tracks, and sheet music. It's all part of the fun we'll have at the Midwinter Convention this January.

Amy Rose joins marketing team
 |
Social media matriarch Becca Grimmer (left) hands off to Amy Rose (right,) who will fill in during Becca's maternity leave.
|
Amy Rose hadn't expected to be taking a job at our Nashville headquarters, but life is funny that way. The 15-year member of Sweet Adelines International, an experienced chorus and quartet singer, recently arrived in Tennessee with her husband Donny, newly hired as Director of Harmony University. "With Becca Grimmer's baby due next month, there was a need for someone who could step in immediately, for a limited-term engagement. I'm thrilled to be a part of the BHS team and spend my day connecting with the barbershop community!"
Amy earned a Design degree from The Art Institute of Seattle and loves all things social media. "This job allows me to combine several interests into one dream gig: graphic design, social media, and barbershop!"
Amy will be the voice powering our official Facebook page , the @barbershopnews Twitter account, and a contributor to The Harmonizer and the headquarters marketing team. Reach her via those channels, or arose@barbershop.org

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD
"No One Is Alone"
Into the woods, to Grandmother's house to sell the cow, to go to the festival, to slay the giant!
Earlier this year we launched Jon Nicholas's Hooked on a Feeling
attached to the mega blockbuster "Guardians of the Galaxy." Next month, Into the Woods comes to the big screen with similar Hollywood pomp and circumstance.. (Think of the 2012 Les Miserables movie but with Stephen Sondheim at the helm.)
Get ahead of the excitement stirred by Into the Woods with "No One is Alone," the featured song from the movie. Imagine singing the featured song from the film the same week it opens in theaters!
Liz Garnett's arrangement is singable and moving, and we think you'll enjoy this ballad.

Volunteers needed for midwinter convention
Another little miracle that makes our Society run: volunteers, who donate thousands of hours of labor each year to make our events run smoothly. Want to be a part of it? Sidle on down to New Orleans and help out at midwinter, January 6-11. We need cheerful people who want to chat with other Barbershoppers, man a booth, guide performers, and so on. You can help in all areas: Harmony Marketplace, auditorium, host/hostess for performers and judges -- the watch words are can do!

Danny Becker: staffer, Barbershopper, new dad

WHAT WE'RE THANKFUL FOR: BECKER AND BABIES!
Meet your headquarters staff: Danny Becker
So much of the work of the headquarters staff is invisible. Printing happens (thanks, Justin and Joe.) Bills are paid (thanks, Jama and Stacy.) Your CDs and shirts go out the door each day (thanks, Pam!)
Real live people make these things happen, and you should know them. Today, we'd like you to meet Customer Service Representative Danny Becker, who daily fields your calls to renew memberships, register quartets, and purchase Christmas gifts If you could spend the day with any celebrity, who would it be and why? "Either Dave Matthews or Steven Tyler because, man, I bet they've got some stories to tell!" What is your weirdest quirk?
"The woman on the Starbucks sleeve for the hot drinks has to line up with the opening where you drink." What is your most-asked question over the phone in the customer service department?
"Can I renew my membership over the phone?" (Absolutely!) What CD is in your car right now?
::nervous laugh:: "Well, it was Martina McBride, but only because my wife, Melissa, was in the car before me...I promise!" Bonus fact:
Danny and Melissa proudly welcomed another singer into the world this week, with the birth of their second child!

Pick the songs, arrangers and fantasy quartet for a new songbook!
"The Stephen Foster Songbook" will contain ten newly-commissioned arrangements by arrangers YOU select, plus the classic arrangements of "Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" by Ed Waesche and "Beautiful Dreamer" by David Wright. Two of these new arrangements will be debuted at the Saturday Night Spectacular in Pittsburgh, by a fantasy quartet you assemble. Yep-- pick each voice for the ultimate fantasy quartet, and we'll make it happen. And finally: everyone attending the convention will receive music and learning tracks in advance so they can participate in the debut performance led by a director you select.

ACCIDENTALS: Correction from last week
Champs now booking summer tour -- grab dates while you can!
It's pretty rare that a world champion quartet is available for an extended period, but the Musical island Boys are a pretty rare quartet. Crossing the Pacific is not done lightly, so the quartet wants to maximize its barbershop time while in North America. The quartet is now accepting inquiries for booking shows, schools, and outreach events Friday, June 12 through Sunday, June 28 inclusive. For full details, contact Matthew Gifford at matt@musicalislandboys.co.nz or phone 011 +682 71137. (NOTE: CORRECTED PHONE NUMBER.)
