"It's The Music" campaign a smashing success;
still time to get a beautiful framed remembrance

It's the music, indeed, that has kept our Society alive and vibrant through the past 76 years, and our convention on Las Vegas celebrated the music in many ways.

At the Saturday Night Spectacular, Harmony Foundation International capped a $100,000 challenge grant by offering vintage sheet music from the Old Songs Library set in beautiful frames constructed of timbers from a 75-year-old barn.

Response was tremendous! In fact, demand was greater than supply, leaving the Foundation team with the happy problem of trying to fulfill requests beyond its capacity.

If you missed your chance in Las Vegas, or were not present, you can still receive one of these beautiful remembrances. Contact Ryan Killeen rkilleen@harmonyfoundation.org to arrange to become a step-up donor at or above the $250 level.

Additional artwork will be ordered by Friday, July 17, so make your commitment now.

Share the Saturday Night Spectacular replay with students and teachers

Our beta test of a free webcast feed aimed at expanding audience among students and educators was a smashing success. We added more than 1000 viewers to our webcast audience, while apparently growing our core audience as well. Webcast subscribers, thank you for helping bring barbershop to its future leaders!

To continue the growth and encourage further sharing, we have extended the offer to students and teachers with a special delayed feed of the Saturday Night Spectacular and contest. This is a great introduction to all things barbershop and includes:

  • the Saturday Night Spectacular (acceptance set by The Vocal Majority, college champs The Academy, CBQC Chorus, Next Generation Chorus)

  • Quartet Finals

  • Swan Song set by Masterpiece (with the Masters of Harmony)

  • Award of medals and a moving speech by Musical Island Boys

Students and educators who already created accounts on bhswebcast.com can log in and add the delyed viewing product, then enjoy the show. New education customers can create an account, add the no-charge edu delayed feed, and enjoy.

HIT OF THE CONVENTION
C'mon, Get "Happy"

Yes, the sky was falling, and the Rapture nigh, because a song released less than one year ago was being sung on a stage at our convention.

And boy, did the young singers in the Next Generation Chorus sing the heck out of "Happy", an irresistible pop hit for Pharrell Williams featured on the soundtrack to "Despicable Me 2."

Catchy beat (with handclaps!), cheery lyrics, fun patter, and relevance to general audiences will make this a big hit throughout the Society. It sold out at convention. This is going to be a monster. A poppin' learning track by Tony DeRosa might even convince your kids to start barbershopping with this one.

SPEAKING OF CHANGING LIVES...
Webcast welcomes Grammy-nominated Neyla Pekarek

This year's webcast featured famous guests like Darin Drown (Storm Front), Tim Waurick (Vocal Spectrum) and Neyla Pekarek (folk-rock group The Lumineers.)

Sweet Adeline Neyla Pekarek, more famously known as the cellist of the Grammy nominated folk rock band, The Lumineers, joined 7,000 attendees at the Las Vegas convention. Neyla was invited to chat with the webcast hosts where she stated that coming to the convention she felt much more at home and even star-struck.

She also reveals that she found barbershop in an odd sort of way. Her high school choir teacher was Darin Drown (Sound of the Rockies, Storm Front) and he needed a babysitter while he sang with Storm Front. That's where she fell in love with barbershop in the barbertots room and had to stop nannying so she could go and watch the contest.

She now sings with Harborlites Chorus and just qualified for the Sweet Adeline International Convention in Baltimore with her quartet, Swoon, and she plans to sing as much barbershop as possible before going on tour again with The Lumineers.

She is also great friends with Tim Waurick. They met at the Rocky Mountain District Harmony College in 2009.

Spanish Barbershoppers seek guest choruses for 2015 convention

Having seen the tremendous reception offshore barbershop choruses receive in North America, perhaps you should consider a trip abroad yourself. Gail Grainger, president of the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers extends an invitation in a note posted on our barbershophq.com blog

SABS is a relatively new barbershop organisation formed 6 years ago and for the last 5 years we have tried to run an annual convention. We only have 150 members at present, made up of 75% ex-pats and 25% Spanish nationals, but we have been able to have a small convention of up to 600 registrations in recent years because International choruses have attended to compete in our 'International' competition which is run separately to our National contest.

This year we had only 2 Spanish choruses in our National competition and then a further 7 from England, Ireland, Sweden and Holland in our International section. It was not only a boost for our memberships but also started to support our goals to grow by bringing barbershop to more people as we ran extra shows in the area (Calpe) in the run up to convention.

For 2015, we have chosen to hold our convention in Barcelona, not only because we felt it would be appealing to our International guests but also because there is no barbershop chorus in that area and we see it as a chance to bring barbershop to a new region.
