Musical Island Boys take quartet gold; get scoresheets and video now
The North American tradition of barbershop harmony became still more global last week in Las Vegas, as two offshore quartets placed in the top five of the world championships. THE MUSICAL ISLAND BOYS of New Zealand became only the second non-North American quartet to win the gold medals, while Lemon Squeezy of Sweden placed fifth at the annual competition of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The top finishers were, in order: -
Musical Island Boys, 8058 points, 89.5 %
-
Forefront, 8021 points, 89.1%
-
Main Street, 8015 points, 89.1%
-
A Mighty WInd, 7976 points, 88.6%
-
Lemon Squeezy, 7918 points, 88%
To capture the crown, the new champs sang through a wide repertoire that included songs from "The Lion King," Michael Jackson, Motown, and a touching, simple song of parting, "Now Is The Hour." The Musical Island Boys add championship medals to chests already decorated with gold as collegiate champions in 2006, New Zealand national champions in 2007, and silver medals in world competition in 2011 and 2012. Vocal Majority reclaims crown in convincing style

The 158-man VOCAL MAJORITY CHORUS of Dallas captured its twelfth world championship last week in Las Vegas, in a battle of titans that included pirates, clowns, a skating rink, and a chorus of zombies performing "Thriller."
The new champs sang a heartfelt romantic ballad, "You'll Never Know," and a rousing tribute to returning soldiers, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" that brought the crowd of nearly 7000 to its feet in the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Vocal Majority edged out rivals Masters of Harmony, itself an eight-time champ, in the first-ever head-to-head battle of the two giants.
The top finishers were:
- Vocal Majority, Dallas, 2903 points, average 96.8%
- Masters of Harmony, Los Angeles, 2854 points, 95.1%
- Great Northern Union, Minneapolis, 2836 points, 94.5%
- Sound of the Rockies, Denver, 2784 points, 92,8%
- zero8, Stockholm, Sweden, 2772, 92.4%
The win marks the Vocal Majority's first championship under the direction of Greg Clancy, whose father, Jim, directed the chorus through four decades and eleven wins.
